Although Elizabeth could claim no prior cartography experience - she did not have a bad hand with a pen. There were all sorts of artistic hobbies available to her as a young lady in Port Royal and she'd had an art tutor for a short period (none of Elizabeth's tutors or governesses had lasted for a long duration.) She hadn't misliked art as she had hated sewing but it was so proper it had never held her attention for long. However she had decided as long as they had been given these journals and were to travel this country, Elizabeth was going to log where she had been and where they were going. It was not as good as sailing by any means and it certainly was not freedom. But it was at least interesting and more so than any proper lifestyle could have been. So each time it was the new route was posted, Elizabeth found a space near the board when it was not busy and copied the route into her journal. Apart from her rather strident note to James it was the only content of her journal. Sometimes she drew it from eye if she had time and Geraldine was behaving (if she was in a rush -she just held the journal to the notice board to hurriedly trace it.) Today she had time and was glad - it was the first time the map had showed a coast and Elizabeth wondered if she might like the live of a stowaway as much as a carnival performer. Though it was foolhardy to think of stowing away without a reason. She wished she had proper maps so she might at least consider where she might be able to hope for as a destination. |
