Elizabeth grinned back, "Pirates do have their own rules," she said. "but even those are more like guidelines." Piracy was the freedom to do what you wanted - which is why of course Beckett was so determined to end it and Elizabeth felt annoyed all over again at being taken from the fight against him.
"It's even more odd because as different as things seem to be," Elizabeth said. "Some how being part of a Carnival doesn't seem that different to being a pirate." She shrugged. "They're both disreputable. Though Carnival life is considerably less violent." Which was just as well as Elizabeth didn't have a weapon. "But everything - the clothing, the food, the trucks. It's all new to me." Though very little of it seemed actually new - the 1930's seem to be covered in a layer of dust.
