There were little benefits when new folks arrived, some times it was just a matter of taking the pressure off others who were filling in on roles, or spending a bit of extra spare time picking up the slack of general duties. One of Kaylee's favourite additions to the carnival crew, besides Simon had been the cooks that now ran the mess. They were a little skittish in their own, personal ways at least from what she could tell watching them. It wasn't so much as bad thing, their food was good! They seemed nice enough, They just looked to be a little too highly strung. The food they had, though most considered it scraping by was fresher than Kaylee normally had on Serenity, most of the time anyway, definitely better than a lump of protein moulded into a brick. Though fresh strawberries hasn't yet appeared in any of the towns, there was plenty of other fresh fruits. Oranges and apples in particular weren't hard to come by, Kaylee enjoying those whenever she could. Aside from fresh items, baked products had started appearing, pies mostly since that new guy had arrived. Pies with pear or apple, crusty and warm and very sweet. When there was enough going around after dinner, Kaylee tended to indulge, albeit it a small portion to ensure everyone got a taste too. This afternoon however, something struck her as she was brushing down the horses and her stomach rumbled. Normally an empty stomach only made the wait for dinner seem a little longer, but now Kaylee suddenly wondered why she should wait at all. The food was there, she wanted it why should she wait for anyone else? Setting the brushes down she headed over to the cook tent, hoping she'd find something to take. She found the still hot pies cooling on the prep bench, two apple and two pear. She inhaled deeply, her expression one of pure bliss, bordering on love. Yep, these were definitely for her. Why should she be so worried about other folk getting a piece? Probably no one liked deserts as much as she did which made it practically a waste of food. She took one of the baskets folk generally used in town for groceries and slung it in one arm. Very carefully she placed the two pear pies in the basket, followed by the first of the apple, hesitating with the last of them. Hesitating only because she decided to dive in right there. Kaylee yanked a large spoon, usually reserved for serving a portion from the cutlery basket and started digging in to the still warm apple pie right then and there, a serene sort of smile curling upon her lips as she ate. |
