While Elizabeth had never made the least claim towards being a proper lady - except perhaps under her father’s eye and only then to not disappoint him, she could admit at least to herself that the costume she wore as performer gave her slight pause every time she put it on. If she could call it a costume when back home not even the whores in Tortuga would have gone out in public in an outfit that clung so tightly or showed so much. She had disregarded it entirely for her rehearsals doing those in the provided trousers and shirt or on occasion the other clothing she’d been provided. (Despite the rapid passing of time - it was still not acceptable for women to wear trousers, which irritated her no end.) But for performances in the big top she had little option. The first time she tried on the outfit - directly before her first performance, she couldn’t decide if she was grateful that she didn’t have to be laced into it like a corset or if she should be thankful that corsets didn’t cling like this material did. And what on earth was the point of stockings that she could see through. They weren’t for warmth, they weren’t to cover her up. They were just irritating. Repeated wearing of the thing did not improve her opinion. Most of the time the only comfort Elizabeth could think of when she put on her show costume before she bribed Geraldine into behaving with food was that at least she wouldn’t see anyone she knew like this. She could just imagine the effect it would have on Will which made her smile for a moment until she reminded herself he’d as much as caused her to be traded to Sao Feng and hadn’t trusted her besides. If she hadn’t been on the Empress, she may not have ended up here. So in a way it was all his fault. And she was quite aware of what thoughts would go through other pirates heads - something she really did not want to dwell on. |
