"Thought maybe you were the elephant trainer," she quipped in response to his statement of his position. She realized she was being unnecessarily grumpy, and she shrugged slightly by way of apology.
"Too long," she replied to his question. But honestly, an hour here was too long. "I think it's going on a couple of weeks now," she murmured. She hadn't honestly been paying much attention. She knew it had been more than a week, but maybe it hadn't quite been two whole weeks. So going on two seemed to work.
"You seem to be adjusting well," she observed. Honestly, most of the people she'd seen around did seem to be adjusting relatively well -- or faking it -- but she couldn't get the hang of pretending to be happy here. She wasn't a fan of this place, and she imagined it showed in every thing she did and said, and every interaction she had with anyone.
