Cheer up. It'll get better. You should smile more. Lily was tired of the pointless phrases people kept throwing at her. It wasn't going to get better, smiling wasn't going to change anything, and she wasn't feeling very cheerful. She was sort of feeling the opposite of cheerful, if cheerful had a direct opposite. She wasn't even trying to fake smiles for the shows. She went through the motions, she tumbled and sort of juggled and did all the other things until their turn was over and she could escape. She wasn't happy here. She missed her father, her brothers, her cousins, her friends, her mother. She just had no idea how to get home. Everyone said it was impossible, that people didn't get sent home, but she was sure that was wrong. It had to be wrong. She couldn't be trapped here forever. Or, as some wise-ass had pointed out, trapped here until she died so it wasn't really forever. Lily was coming to hate weekends and holidays, and the irony of that wasn't lost on her. Weekends meant more work, more crowds, more ... everything she hated about this place. Moving through the crowds with the intention of getting a snack to see if that helped things -- even though she knew it wouldn't -- she paused as she regarded the balloons. The colors seemed dramatically out of place, and she snorted slightly before her brown eyes shifted to regard the bloke selling them. He looked new. Not brand new, but newer, and by the time she'd decided not to bother stopping to say hi (she wasn't feeling very sociable) she realized she'd been staring and if he'd noticed, it would make just walking away awkward. Given that she had to see these people on a daily basis, she figured it was prudent to avoid as much awkward as possible. So she pursed her lips slightly before she wandered over toward the balloon vendor. "Hey," she greeted him with a twitch of her lips that was supposed to be a smile. |
