Anna'd put it off as long as she could. She'd been there for days and hadn't fed since she'd suddenly found herself corporeal. She'd never liked compelling people to feed from them, but it hadn't been a choice for centuries. There just wasn't another way. It wasn't like there were people lining up with a sign that said drink my blood please. And considering blood bags were still very, very new and she doubted there was a blood bank nearby, it was going to come down to a life and death choice.
Life -- for her, if she fed. She wouldn't kill someone to feed from them if she didn't have to, though. Killing people for the sake of killing them had never been her style. Her mother had taught her better than that. Neither of them had ever turned off their humanity, though Anna had come close once, after Emily Bennett had died and she'd been truly alone for the first time in her life. But she'd clung to her humanity knowing her mother wouldn't want her to become a monster.
But she'd never had a steady diet of animals either, and she wouldn't be as strong if she depended on that.
Or there was option two.
Death -- for her, if she didn't feed. And she'd spent enough time being dead and had no desire to go back to it if she could avoid it. Which left her with little choice. That didn't mean she was happy about it. It was just a fact of life. It was part of being a vampire.
Her choice made, Anna slipped away from the carnival limits and headed toward the town at large, keeping her eyes and ears open for anything abnormal. Anything aside from her, anyway. A man a few yards ahead caught her attention as he too, headed away from the carnival. She wasn't sure if he was a towns person who was heading home for the night, or if he was one of the carnival workers. She'd have to be careful either way. But she wasn't going to be able to feed off someone she worked with every day.
Hurrying her steps a little, Anna moved to catch up with the man.
