Brae’s stomach had been rumbling since the early afternoon, thanks to running out the door in a hurry to make it to his morning session, only grabbing a protein bar before hopping on his bike and taking off towards the gym. It wasn’t like he was overexerting himself, sitting on the sidelines (he was still bitter about that, 8 years later), but that didn’t change the fact that he hadn’t eaten all day, and was absolutely starving by the time he had gotten back to his place, only to start climbing the walls because he was so bored and restless. That was when he had decided to text his sister, the only one (that he knew of) who was in the country, let alone the same city. He knew she was alone most days, since it was summer, and her husband was at work, so he figured it was a win-win for both of them if she was up for some company.
He had decided to get a pizza on the way to Meagan’s – half sausage, half plain – and a side of breadsticks, though one of the little logs of bread was already caught between his teeth as he balanced the box of pizza, the box that held the cheesecake, and the bag that held what he was currently munching at in one of his arms, using the other to bring his knuckles against the door to knock. He stepped back, taking another bite of bread as he took a look around the place. It was a nice place, he couldn’t deny them that, but there was something about it that had never settled quite right with him.
He knew deep down it had more to do with the man who had married his sister than it did the architecture of their home.
When the door finally opened, he gave her a smile, his cheek puffed out a bit because he still had some food in his mouth. “Hi.” He swallowed what was in his mouth before he lifted the boxes a bit. “Hungry?”
