SUMMARY: Friendly chatter!

Megan entered the library, arms full of sheet music given to her by Professor Flitwick. She was certain he had the entire year planned for choir, but was indulging her all the same. She never expected to be named the head of a club, but she was certainly grateful for the opportunity. Choir was one of those rare social interactions where she wasn’t her normal shy self. Perhaps because she knew most of the people within the club, or perhaps because they were all there for the same reason. This year was already proving to be an emotionally draining one, she wanted to do her part to make sure that choir could be an escape. They all needed a moment of levity. Spotting Parvati at a nearly empty table she made her way over, noting that the other girl appeared to be doing something other than homework. “Do you mind if I sit? I promise I won’t be distracting,” she added with a smile, waiting for approval before settling in. “What are you working on?” “Not at all!” Parvati said cheerfully but quietly. In truth Parvati welcomed the distraction. She had made it a goal of hers to study a bit more each year and she was quite pleased how much time she’s spent in the library so far this term. Of course after a while Parvati really needed a break so instead she started working on her horoscopes for the students that were willing to participate. She had already kept a list of students and their birthdates as it was easier to keep track who fell under what sign. Parvati had worked on what each sign meant and now she thought it could be fun to create what signs were the best matches. Parvati moved a few books out of the way so Megan could see what she was working on. “Hannah asked what sign was the best match for her, so I thought next time I could make a list. The best matches romantically or just for friendships. Better than talking about which slice of toast is better.” Parvati added rolling her eyes. Today’s Muggle Studies had been easy enough but still incredibly irritating. It was clear what Professor Carrow wanted to hear and in some ways, it made Parvati’s answer all that more fun. She’d never know that Parvati honestly didn’t care what the blasted toast tasted like, but it was fun to laugh at her. Megan couldn’t help but turn her attention to what was in front of Parvati. It didn’t take her long to realize it had to do with horoscopes, but Megan had never paid much attention to the subject before. She was superstitious by nature and got a bit wrapped up in these kind of things. It was better to remove herself entirely, especially if she wasn’t sure the future would hold good tidings. Still, with everything laid out she couldn’t help but be curious by it all. She never really figured out how it all worked. How they could predict something for something as ubiquitous as birthdays. “That sounds like something Hannah would ask about,” smiling fondly. She heard she had broken up with Danny, but so far she seemed to be handling it well. “Much better, for mind and stomach.” Megan was trying to be careful not to begroan the lessons too much. The last thing she needed was for it to get back to the Carrows. They weren’t enemies she was interested in making. “What have you figured out so far? We have the same sign, you know. This could be good information to have.” “She did ask,” Parvati answered cheerfully. Then her face fell as she was shuffling through her papers and magazines. “Sadly, nothing so far. I must have left the magazine back in the dorm. I was only just updating the horoscope list before you arrived.” Her list would just have to wait for another day. As Parvati did not feel like going back to Gryffindor and all the way down to the library. “I only came here for some peace and quiet, but I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to get some real work done now that I’m here, right?” Parvati smiled at Megan as she started to put her horoscope things away. “I packed a few homework lessons just in case.” At least it was something to take her mind off of Muggle Studies and Dark Arts. “What about you? What brings you to the library?” “You’re looking for peace and quiet and I come barging in asking questions. I hope you don’t mind too much. I’ve always found the library to be one of my noisiest study spots. Maybe because I run into so many people. Or maybe this is my way of sticking it to the man….A very sad way, mind you.” Her smile made it clear that she was teasing, but she was rather terrible about talking in the library. She was never too loud or disruptive, but she still talked. “Looking over some music for choir. Professor Flitwick is nice enough to pretend like I have some sway over what we do this year. I just want something fun, you know? We all need a break from everything. Why not through choir?” “Not at all dear!” Parvati said with a smile. “Gryffindor can be chaotic at times,” she added grinning at Megan. “Time away is always good.” She laughed again, a little more loudly but coughed slightly as a way to apologize. Just in case there was someone near the two of them. “Choir, how fun. What ideas do you have? You lot are lucky, my journal likes it when I sing to it, but I’m just dreadful. I really liked the songs you had last year? Are you guys planning on anything special for Halloween?” Letting Megan answer of course she added a bit later. “I really wish we had more clubs to choose from. Though I don’t know how much time I could give anyway, since I’m a Prefect now.” There was no denying that Parvati really wanted to start a Divinations club, but it would be nearly impossible with all the other work she had to do this year. Not that she blamed Hermione for leaving, Parvati just couldn’t understand why she was the one to be made Prefect and not someone like Lavender or Olive. Parvati liked Shoshanna a lot, but she didn’t think that Shoshanna would even like the idea of being a prefect. “That’s okay, I like to sing, but my journal despises music. Especially my voice. I try to keep it in my trunk if I’m practicing, but sometimes it likes to keep whining to just remind me that it thinks I’m horrible,” she said, smiling as if fondly amused by the whole thing. She was sure it was only doing it to be difficult, but if it was going to keep biting her when she swore then she was going to keep singing at it. “Probably. We usually do. To be honest I don’t really know all the plans. I’m hoping to come up with something interesting. That’s why I’m here. Better to do it now then when I’m swamped with homework.” “Congratulations on that, by the way. Your parents must have been extremely proud of you.” Being a leader of choir was nothing like being a Prefect. Megan wasn’t sure she had the stomach for that sort of responsibility. She was happy to let others take the lead. “It doesn’t have to be an official club. Maybe you can organize a group and meet once and awhile, if there is something you’re really interested in.” “Thanks!” Parvati said happily. “Mom was proud, but Dad said something along the lines of not being really mine or else I would have received it in the 5th year.” She shrugged as she smiled. “But he was still happy for me. I just hope I don’t mess things up. Hermione was a pain sometimes, but she was still a great responsible Prefect.” Of course with this year heading down a dark path. Parvati was extremely worried that she was going to do something to fuck things up. “That is a great idea though! Maybe I can get a small group of friends together for Divinations. It’s course that I wish was made into a club, but we don’t always have the student support. Since most people are interested, but I know a few students that would be willing to join if I put something together. Thanks, Megan. I’ll see what the rules are for student lead unofficial groups, surely it won’t be too much of a problem.” That did bring up Parvati’s mood some. Not that she was in a bad mood, but it gave her something to look forward to. “I’m sure you’ll find something perfect for the Choir though. Music cheers people up and Merlin knows we could all use some cheering up these days.” “Don’t think of it that way, things happen. It’s yours now and you should enjoy it. Hermione was very responsible, but so are you. I don’t think that it’s a bad thing that you both have different styles.” Even if Hermione had been a halfblood and allowed at school, she would have been like oil and water with the Carrows. She was too focused on facts and didn’t have the political savvy to play the game. Not that Megan did either, but she at least knew when to keep her mouth shut. Parvati would be a good Prefect, she was sure of that. “There is lots you could do. Even those people not in the class, myself included, find it interesting. You guys could do card readings to raise money or something. Not that you need to raise money for anything, but just in case. The only thing is...Well, make sure the Carrows know your exact intentions. I have a feeling they won’t be fond of too many unorganized groups given the way things are. Not that they would think you had some evil plan right away...but just in case.” “Thank you, Megan.” It did make her feeling better that someone other than Lavender and Padma had faith in her Prefecting abilities. In truth Parvati was glad that Hermione wasn’t here this year. Yes, Parvati was very worried about her out on the run, but she knew that she was with Harry and Ron and that if anyone had the smarts to be safe, it was Hermione. But with her in the castle, she had a bad feeling of what would happen with her face to face with the Carrows. While she hated what was going on, she was more worried about what would happen if people kept breaking the rules. “That really is a brilliant idea! Oh and yes, I completely agree. I’m just wondering which one would be more willing to let me have this group. Male or Female Carrow.” There was also the part that the Patils weren’t exactly on their favorite list of people. But she liked to think that she was improving in their classes, so it wouldn’t hurt to at least ask sometime down the road. Once she could prove what a trusting student she was; even if the idea of having someone like the Carrows like her well enough made her a little sick. “You’re definitely onto something. It wouldn’t hurt to get some organizing done and set up a time in the future where I can ask them. Thanks, Megan.” Parvati started to gather her things. “I should probably head back. There’s no point in trying to get done now that I’m too excited and you still need to find something for choir!” “No worries! I’m glad I could help. Let me know what they say, yeah? I don’t have any sort of talent for Divination, but I hope you get your club. I know what choir has meant to me.” Megan waved the other girl off before fanning the sheet music out in front of her. She probably should have gone somewhere where should could hum along with the tunes, but no bother. She’d do well enough singing to herself in her head. |
