WHO: Lisa Turpin
WHEN: 10 August, a few days after the Muggleborn Registration Committee became a Thing.
WHERE: West Charleton, Devon
SUMMARY: Lisa gradually works herself into a panic because where is Mandy?
RATING: G
STATUS: Complete
It was a quiet, late summer afternoon in the Brooks house in West Charleton, at least for the most part. The entire family was out--Franklin and her mother were out for a walk, Killian and Jessica were visiting friends, and Landon was spending the weekend with his mother--leaving Lisa with a few quiet hours by herself. On the one hand, she appreciated the quiet, especially in light of present circumstances, but on the other hand, she longed for a bit of noise and distraction to keep her mind off the letter in her hand. The letter, penned in Mandy Brocklehurst's loopy writing, detailed her summons to the Ministry of Magic to register as Muggleborn. I don't really understand why they want us to register, and if Umbridge is involved, you can bet I'll be in and out as fast as they'll allow me, she wrote. But I don't think you need to worry too much. I'll owl you as soon as I'm able, and I'll see if I can't pop by next week! Love you! The letter was dated three days prior, and Lisa found that most concerning. She'd waited all day for Mandy to owl again once she'd received the letter, and then all of the next day, and then all of the next, but to no avail. On the first day, she'd thought that perhaps her family's presence all day had deterred any owls from coming to her window, but Lisa was beginning to realize that this simply was not the case. Something had gone very wrong in the Ministry. But what had gone wrong? She paced barefoot in her bedroom (followed closely by her new kitten, Sir Whiskers) as she thought. Mandy wasn't a troublemaker. She was quiet and introverted, and even when she was afraid, she wouldn't get herself into trouble with the Ministry. Hadn't she quietly expressed to Lisa her pride that she'd never been called for detention when Umbridge was a teacher and then headmistress? Wasn't she one of the best behaved students in their year? Even if she had strong opinions--and she did--she expressed them quietly and gently and was more prone to agreeing to disagree than anything else. So what had gone wrong? Perhaps she was embarrassed about whatever it was. Perhaps registering as Muggleborn had involved making public details of her life that she'd rather have kept private. Perhaps she'd been ordered to go straight home and not tell anyone about what happened. Perhaps... A slamming door shocked Lisa out of her increasingly manic thoughts, and she nearly dropped Mandy's letter. "Lisa? We're going to Creeks End, if you wanted to come along," her mother called. Lisa swallowed hard, surprised at how dry her mouth had become, and answered, "Yeah, give me a minute or two, alright?" Without waiting for a response, she sat at her desk and grabbed the nearest paper and pen she could and scribbled out a note for Mandy. Is everything alright? I haven't heard from you since you went into the Ministry. I'm kind of worried. Please write back soon, even if you have to use the Muggle post. I'm at my mum's house, so I'll get it straightaway if you do. Love you. She'd head to the nearest wizard post office the next day, assuming they were open on Sundays--she hoped that they were, especially in wartime--and she'd send the note off. And if that didn't work, she'd send Muggle post and more Muggle post and more owls until Mandy finally answered. And she would answer. Lisa was sure of it. |
