”POST!” Paige heard her mother bellow up the stairs. What was she still doing here, wasn’t she supposed to be at work? Paige rolled herself off her bed barely catching herself on her feet. A heavy sigh escaped as if moving from one room of the house to another was a gargantuan task. Paige’s mother was becoming increasingly less sympathetic to Paige’s slovenly mood. Spouting of things like a boy did not define her. Paige hadn’t be really listening last night and was sort of disappointed when her mother was around in the morning most likely armed with another lecture in exchange for the morning post. That was probably there was less of an excited shuffle to her movement, given she had been waiting to hear from Colin since August third, when the announcement of Muggleborn Registration came out. “Coming,” she whined out loudly. She felt like she could hear her mother’s eye roll. She thud, as much as her tiny frame could thud down the stairs and to the kitchen. Paige looked at her mother expecting the lecture to come, but there was more concern to her features. “Is it from Colin? Did you read it?” Paige felt violated if her mother read her letter from Colin, it was her letter. Her mother shook her head, ”But I know it is from him.” Paige’s interest perked and she was once more eager to rip into the envelope. “Give it to me,” she shrieked with excitement. She practically skipped into her the kitchen to snatch the envelope from her mother’s hand. It was more excitement than nerves as she tore into the letter. She unfolded it with a blush hitting her cheek and butterflies in her stomach. Was he going to tell her when he was going to come visit? Or when she could come visit him. Maybe get to see a muggle picture with him. The letter started well enough, ’Hope this note finds you well.’ It does, she thought and she was loads better now there was more communication. They had a few letters in July and saw each other once but there had been talk of a full weekend in August. This had to confirm the plans. But as she read on she felt her stomach drop. Her fears confirmed. The registration would affect her. Affect her Colin. Wasn’t there something she could do? Fake his family tree? But his decision was made up. The words blurred as tears brimmed. She slide down the cupboard sitting down on the floor. Shattered and devastated she began to cry. The words ’Dennis and I are going on the run to look for Harry and stay out of the way of the Ministry. We'll be okay. Stay safe.’ Echoing in her mind. The frantic words of her mother asking what was wrong, what the note said, did not enter her mind at all. He was leaving. Running away. It would be safer, if he found Harry. But it was Colin. She adored him to bits but well, he was delicate, she liked that about him. She just wasn’t sure he could handle things on his own. What if she went with him? Maybe she could sneak out find him and run away. But as she looked on further she noted those exact words of not to follow. He knew her too well. They were still together right? He wasn’t dumping her. No he couldn’t. She cared about him too much and it wasn’t in the note. He would be okay, she would hear from him again. She crunched the parchment in her fist as her hands went to cover her face. Heaving sighs moved her body as she gasped for breath between the tears. “He is running,” she sobbed. She wasn’t aware of anything else until she felt the comforting arms of her mother wrap around her. She fell into her mother’s chest and just cried. What if she never saw him again? She never got to say goodbye. “Bye Colin,” she whispered through sobs. But it wasn’t enough. |
