"Shut up!" Miles Bletchley lifted his head up from the armrest of the sofa and peered at his sister. Even their mother's cat turned an alarmed stare in her direction. Smack. The recently arrived book quivered beneath Vivian's forceful palm and grew quiet at last. "Bloody piece of--" "Language." Miles grinned and returned to his magazine. It would have been a quiet evening, save for Vivian battling her oddly clingy Muggle Studies journal (if she'd thought the mere idea of the class was a waste of time before, she certainly hadn't changed her mind now). Their mother was not home. Out, she'd said, to see her sister, leaving her children to exchange looks and surmise that they would not be seeing her return on account of her consuming the contents of an entire bottle of red and sleeping it off in her sister's guest room. And it wasn't that their parents had shouting matches -- no. It was worse. It was a toxic silent treatment, a Cold War with subtle battles and the ongoing rising tension of just not knowing when a ticking bomb might go off. "Hullo," greeted their father. He smiled nervously, thought about asking Miles to take his shoes off the couch and changed his mind. Looking past him, Vivian immediately understood why. Filling the doorframe was the very reason why tonight would not be a quiet night. “Evening,” Millicent greeted, shooting Vivian a menacing grin before turning it back into a sweet smile before Philip looked at her again. She was not at all happy with this new family she was suddenly forced to accept as her own, but Philip was tolerable at least and if she had to suffer through being a halfblood and no longer being an only child she was going to make her new siblings suffer just as much. “I do hope I’m not spoiling your plans.” Miles and Vivian shared a look. "Not all, darling," Vivian replied and clenched her fist around her journal tightly, smiling all the while. "The more the merrier." That was all the invitation Millicent needed to not-so-gracefully plop herself down on the couch next to Vivian, her smile still sweet as Philip was in the room. “Is that your diary?” she asked, moving to grab the journal from Vivian’s grasp. “We’re sisters now, you can share all you innermost thoughts with me.” Even though she didn't like her journal, it was the principle of the matter. Vivian's eyes flashed as the book was ripped from her fingers. "There's nothing in it. It's just the Muggle Studies book." Millicent was disappointed to find that Vivian wasn’t lying and the book was indeed filled with the many boring thoughts of their fellow students. She didn’t understand the point of these things, other than to give her more reason to want to punch the majority of the Hogwarts population. She tossed the journal to the side, not caring about how she treated Vivian’s belongings, then turned her attention back to the other girl. “What do you usually do around this time?” Vivian did not want to answer, but with her father in the room, she had little choice but to act polite or face his disappointment. Nevermind that she was still working through her own disappointment with him and his… She didn't want to think about it. "This is generally our quiet time," she replied, unwilling to share anything of her actual life with this recent intrusion into her life. "Read, etc." Unless Vivian was going to give Millicent her actual diary to peruse through, she had no interest in sitting in this house and just reading. “We should do something as a family,” she suggested, despite hating that technically they were family. Millicent paused to think of an activity that would not be fun for Vivian while still making Millicent look like a nice daughter to Philip. “Gobstones?” She offered up, amused by the idea of Vivian’s face covered in the liquid spurted out by the stones. "No." This time, the reply came from the Bletchley sitting with his feet propped up on the armrest, his face hidden by a Quidditch magazine. "I hate that game." Vivian smiled triumphantly. "Chess?" she countered. Less messy but Millicent had to admit that she’d always loved the violence of Wizards Chess, even if she had never been that good at playing it. She could easily imagine that the little pieces that her own pieces destroyed were mini Miles and Vivians. “Chess it is.” |
