Armando, I would not disturb you at this most inopportune time but I feel we must discuss the matter of Rubeus Hagrid. I feel that we, the teachers and staff of Hogwarts though myself most of all, must take some of the blame for what has happened. We have known that young Rubeus’ home life is not the most stable with his mother being long gone, his father dying last year and his grandparents being somewhat less than supportive of the boy’s unique heritage. I have done my best to reach out to the young lad but he has always insisted that he was ‘fine, Professor Dumbledore, sir’. I fear I have not pushed as much as I ought to and if he has a better relationship with another teacher then that too has failed. However I feel it is not too late for young Rubeus. He is still just a boy and with his heritage I feel that he sometimes lacks an understanding of the true nature of both the creatures he finds fascinating and the frailty of those who do not possess his unique background. I believe that is how the creature responsible for the attacks managed to suborn him into believing it was not responsible and into aiding and hiding it. Poor Rubeus has always been naïve and easily lead. However we cannot change the past nor can we excuse in any way what has happened but I do not believe we ought to cast a thirteen year old boy into the hands of chance without making some attempt at redemption. Right now Rubeus is at his most vulnerable and I fear it would take little prompting to pull him down a dark and dangerous path, something that would happen all the sooner if we were to simply hand him over to the DMLE, as good as the people there may be. It would be their inclination to send him to Azkaban despite his age and that I fear would ruin him forever. Given the lack of a strong parental figure in his life, I believe it falls to us to provide that role. Despite his expulsion, we still have a responsibility to the boy to guide him to a better and more productive future and guard him from his own foolish ideas. If we do not, who will? It would be a blight on our stewardship of the school if we were to cast away any student, especially one so troubled. It would be a sign of our compassion, that we can still forgive and guide a lost soul back to the right and proper way of life, if we were to aid him. A sign of strength too. Rubeus is no longer a danger to anyone in the castle. He was never the best of students and with his wand broken and the creature he was fostering gone, he is essentially harmless now. Additionally, I am certain that between myself, Vindictus and the other teachers, we can steer him away from any further undue influences. It is my thought that if Rubeus were to be placed as an assistant to Apollyon Pringle, we would be able to achieve the best possible result out of a truly ghastly incident. Apollyon is a very no-nonsense individual and well used to keeping to a strict discipline and work routine, suffering no dallying or moon-calfing, something I believe Rubeus would very much benefit from right now. In addition, the tasks of the Hogwarts groundskeeper would suit Rubeus quite well in my opinion and keep him busy enough to stay well and truly out of any further trouble. It also keeps young Rubeus under our strict and knowledgeable eyes, which I believe far preferable to allowing him to wander. I fear that the creature he had been protecting might once again gain influence over him if we do not guard him well. What do you think of my proposal? It need not be done immediately. It would not harm Rubeus to spend a week or two with his grandparents and then he could take up this new position once the holidays start. The holidays would give Apollyon ample opportunity to evaluate and examine him and determine if he is suitable for the position and to also establish that he can keep young Rebeus under control.
