Viridian, It's been awhile since we've done this -- you know how swamped the Auror Office has been lately when our trainees and younger Aurors are enlisting or being conscripted into the armed forces and the veterans have to pick up the slack -- but are we still going to be practicing duelling this weekend? I should have a few free hours if you've just got the Duelling Club on Saturday, and we could for dinner together afterwards if Evelyn doesn't mind, or bring her and Valerius along if you like -- I'm sure it'd be a nice change from eating in the Great Hall with your students, yes? Anyway, I know you're sharp, so I have no doubt you know exactly why I'm really writing this letter -- you read what Grindelwald was saying in the Daily Prophet yesterday, and we've talked about this many times before, but it looks like it's finally time for us to enlist once we're finished with our duties on the home front. And I'm sure you don't want to wait until they do raise the maximum age of conscription and Goshawk gets on your case about your being a coward who only joined the army because you were forced into it if you do re-apply to the Auror Office -- and you do want to get back into fighting dark wizards and running real investigations rather than wasting your skills handing out detentions and tracking down who wrote some rude words on a lavatory stall before you're too old, don't you? I'm going to be signing up for Active Duty myself, of course -- not sure about the Flying or Ground Divisions, but I really do think we should do this together for old times' sake and because we work well as a team. Actually, some of us at the Auror Office are taking bets on what you'll be doing -- Summers is convinced you're too much of a coward to do anything, but I think she's still sore about that time you ditched her after you got into Auror training in seventh-year; Goshawk thinks you're a coward as well and that you're still too scared of getting into a real fight again after what happened at your last 'safe' professional duel, so she's certain you'll be hiding in the Summer Training programme as a teacher like you're doing at Hogwarts now; your sister stuck up for you -- honestly, you really should give her more credit -- and said she thought you'd do well in Reconnaissance as a sneaky Slytherin with a strong sense of self-preservation. As your closest friend, however, I know you're going to enlist in Active Duty -- and as your friend, you don't want me to lose a bet to those women, do you? No, but seriously, I know you love duelling and are great at it, and being the sort of Slytherin you are, I know you're determined to show you've still got it and deserve a place back in the Auror Office. And what with you not believing in no-win scenarios -- even if you've got a bizarre way of 'winning' those sometimes I'll never get as a more logical Ravenclaw -- I'm sure you'll do what you can or find another way around the physical requirement if you go for the Ground Division; I thought your limp has improved a lot over the years anyway, and if they can let children barely out of school fight, they'd be mad to turn you down just for that. Or we could sign up for the Flying Division together where it wouldn't matter -- it'll almost be like Quidditch in school again, except we'd be on the same team this time. Anyway, we can talk about this more when we have that dinner together after duelling practice. I hope you're doing well enough, even if you're most likely bored of teaching and chasing after students for putting chewing gum under chairs, and isn't it Evelyn's birthday today? Say, 'Hello' to her for me and tell her I send my best wishes. Savage |
