Monica was sitting in the dinning hall with a cup of coffee in front of herself. She was sitting staring at the wall, she had started with glaring at it and now she was just blankly staring off at it.
Emerald came skipping into the room, she noticed the red head and with a giggly smile she waved just a bit. "Ni How, there missy. Was starting ta think ya was hiding from me or something." Emerald told the lady in her perky tone. Not taking immediate notice of the way she was sitting staring.
Monica's eyes shifted onto the Captain, she nodded just slight. "Why would ya think that?" She asked in a sort of monotone voice. No enthusiasm in the words, then she went back to staring not even waiting for an answer.
Emerald poured herself a cup of coffee and then joined Monica at the table in her seat. "Well cause I tried looking for ya all yesterday and wasn't any sign of ya anywhere." She told her, as she scanned Monica over once taking notice of everything including the brace on her hand.
"Was in my bunk." Monica replied not adding anything to it.
"In your bunk ya say ... whatcha do to ya hand then?" Emerald asked, was more than clear that something was wrong didn't take no seer to see that. Her smile faded almost completely as she was reading the security gal's facial expressions.
Monica shrugged, "Was no big deal, some stuff fell off the walls. Hurt it in the process." She wasn't lying, things did fall off the walls and she did hurt her hand in the process. She didn't want to be caught lying but she also didn't want to babble on about it especially to the Captain. She imagined she'd done enough of that to the Doc.
Emerald nodded again, sipping her coffee. "Just fell off the walls, with no help what so ever?" Emm wanted to see what all Monica would say by pushing the issue. Plus she was a bit steamed because she could see the splits on those two fingers which meant they were broke. And Monica breaking her fingers right before a job, well that was just fucking stupid.
Monica shrugged still staring off.
Emm just watched her. "Gorramit Monica, don't you sit there and fucking do that, not to me." Ahh so Emerald was a bit madder than she had figured. Monica, Monica was like the trouble making child who was always getting into trouble at school and when it came time to fess up and explain ... instead of doing so they acted like they didn't know what you was saying much less what they'd done. And that was bull shit; Monica's reasons might have been dump fuck stupid. But Emerald knew that sure enough Monica had a reason even if it was off base and maybe a tad crazy.
Monica responded to the yelling and she looked over at Emerald. “It ain’t no thing, Capt’n.” She told her with a sigh. “Doc done fixed it, it’ll be fine.” She added.
Emerald nodded, “Well I see that, what she do see it and dragged you into the infirmary?” She shook her head still discussed. Then she made a face, her ‘I’m all knowing’ face.
Monica just sat not adding to that, and then she sort of gasped at the look. “Wha?”
“Ya went to see her willingly?” Emerald looked utterly confused. “Now you volunteering, that makes this a bit more interesting and may I say slightly frightening.” Emerald just sort of gawked for a moment.
Monica shook her head, not even caring how in the verse the Captain knew that. Though she finally added, “What little ol’ Dori go runnin’ off tellin’ you. Last fucking time I do that.” She shook her head wondering what all was said.
Emerald gave a look, one that read hurt all over it. “Monica, why don’t you trust none of us on this boat? None… Do you know how much that hurts me to sit here day after day watching that? Watching you slip off to be by yourself. And the one person I would think you’d be the closes too, well she’s the one I think you hate the most.” Emerald couldn’t even figure Monica out completely, and that was saying a bit. Though sometimes she was frightened of what she might find if she ventured that way so she steered clear most the time.
Monica shook her head, “Why does that matter Emerald. She wanted me on this damn boat… to do a damn job… And I do it… despite what of late my head and heart have been telling me.” Monica had thought twice about saying it, but she said it. And so it was done, Emerald could make of it what she wanted.
Emerald sighed, “This is my home Monica, I’ve made it so. And if you don’t see clearly why that would matter to me, why it would hurt me to see my … to see you sitting here the way you do. Well then I’m sorry, and explaining won’t do a bit of good.” She comment none on the last bit, she didn’t even really hear the words.
Monica was just quite, she didn’t want to be doing this, fighting with Emerald and when she didn’t say anything of the slight mention that made her start thinking again upon it. This was what had gotten her in this room staring at the wall in the first place.
Emerald finished off her coffee, and rose to get some more. “Monica your damn good at your job, you know that. But there is more to this ship than just doing jobs… this ship doesn’t run to do jobs. The jobs are ran for the ship.” She added sugar and returned to the table, though she didn’t sit yet.
Monica had seemed to block her out again, losing herself inside her head.
Emerald could tell and so she figured was no reason in going on with her point. It hurt Emm every time that Monica didn’t get it. She didn’t get how the ship was a home and they all were family even in their misfit ways. Emm just couldn’t figure out if it was that Monica just didn’t care, or if she was too afraid or to broken to care. Some days it seemed a little of both. If only Emm could wrap her head around the reason, if she could make Monica’s hurting stop. Then maybe her own hurting might not be so bad. Emerald could see a little of herself in Monica, only the thing was Emerald played off her hurting with silliness and games. Monica simply shut down to people, was a big difference.
“I was wanting to talk business, inform you of a few things along with my concerns involving this job. But it seems you ain’t got your head in the right place. So once you figure out what you want to do, you come to me with your choice and then I’ll fill you in. Till then maybe you should keep to yourself, and no blabbing about undecided intentions to the rest of the crew.” Emerald knew what Monica had been thinking about, and she had realized what she had meant. It had taken her a few to actually hear it, but Monica thinking upon it helped with that a bit. She didn’t want to see the gal leave, she damn near loved her. But whatever would be best for her, cause Emm didn’t need a mixed up Security officer running her boat in the state she was currently.
Monica looked at her, understanding what she meant. Of course she figured it was Dori that told Emerald about what she was thinking and that did nothing but piss her off. Was the way Emerald worded it. She just shook her head, and got up from the table. “I I captain.” She said, sort of sounding sarcastic. She left going to her bunk to pout, or pass out or maybe take some or all those pain pills. ‘Too bad we ain’t no garlic on ship’
Emerald just watched her leave. She hadn’t meant it the way Monica took it. But what would be the point in correcting her. She sighed, picking up on the last bit. She was concerned and so immediately she went to pay her Doc a visit. Though on the way she found Thaad in the hall, and she scooped him up, taking him with her. The cat knew how to calm her down just in his simple peaceful presence.
