Food was food. Jason had very little concept of what went with what. Especially since he ate six to eight times a day. It all sort of ran together. "After dinner," he corrected just to humor her. Even though he'd have some after dinner, later on and probably for breakfast tomorrow if there was any left. He wasn't the only one in this house with a lion sized sweet tooth and appetite.
Jason reached up to stroke Sophie's hair. She was as tall as he was, like her mother had been. The lack of height difference didn't make him feel any less protective of her. No matter how big Sophie got, she'd always be his little princess. Of all his girls, she reminded him the most of Jen. Sweet and sensitive, worried about everybody and everything. He just held her while Sophie voiced her concerns. She wasn't wrong, no matter how childish she felt like she sounded. No it shouldn't be the way it was. Unfortunately, it was.
"I know, Princess," he murred softly. "It's not right." He sighed at her concerns. "I don't know. I'm hoping they won't force him into it." The last thing he wanted to see was Mateo forced to give up his dreams and end up a petty thug like his uncle. "If this doesn't work, I might just haul his uncle and cousins in on warrants and remind them who's territory they're really in. But 'Teo needs to do this. Himself. To end it once and for all. That's the only way his mom and sister will be safe. I know it's terrible. But that's why we have to uphold the laws of man even more than humans. Because we're not above them. No matter what. We are still people."
It was just a thing. If they didn't want humans to see them as monsters, they couldn't act like monsters. No matter how hard it was.
