AJ was probably better than he thought. People always told him he put himself down too much. Which he did, but it was easier to just dismiss his own talents and focus on other people. She did have a good point about just doing it for himself. He never had done that before. "Yeah, it's a place to start," he agreed. "Thanks."
He smiled softly when she said he had to come show her any pictures he took. "I will," he promised. "Since you gave me the idea. Although you might have created a monster, fair warning. I kind of liked taking photos as I was traveling. There are some beautiful places in this country people never really see."
If it had terrified Tiffany, she'd never let on. She just harped on how he was never home or if he was he was sleeping, how he never took her out or when he she was so embarrassed by him and his lack of social skills. Scared of losing him had never seemed to be an issue, although that had come up a few times since he left her.
Apparently her brother wasn't much of a conversationalist either. But if he was as dedicated of a grease monkey as he was, he probably liked cars better than people anyway. Those types were always the best mechanics.
He almost offered Kayla back, but the girl had a good grip on his hair and wasn't looking like she was willing to let go anytime soon. He stayed in Cate's line of sight, gently bouncing the little girl against his shoulder while she dealt with the new customer.
Janice smiled at Cate. "Oh no, honey," she dismissed. "I just swear John is paying your brother in donuts. These are for you and him and the boys." She offered two white boxes to Cate. Colin was a skinny boy, but he packed away food like a defensive lineman. Add in the other one or two mechanics he employed and the two dozen donuts wouldn't last an hour. "Better get yourself one or two before they find out they're here Or you won't get none."
She smiled and turned to AJ. Seemed like a nice, good looking boy. She knew Cate and Kayla's whole sad story. With the way the little baby was clinging to him, she couldn't help but speculate. "Nice to meet you," she greeted. "Well, you couldn't pick better people to fall in with in town. Cate and Colin are the best."
Janice turned back to Cate. "Come over to the shop sometime this week, sweetie," she said. "Colin said Kayla's turning one next month and he wants her to have a fancy birthday cake. We can go over designs and do some tasting."
