Cate could keep up a conversation all by herself without any help at all. She was halfway tempted to take AJ under her wing. It would have helped if she knew more people in town, of course, but she could introduce him to Colin and the other mechanics. Maybe some of the other patrons. They had some regulars, after all. "You play any sports?" she asked, thinking that also might be a good way to find him some friends.
The more he said about his ex-wife, the less Cate cared for the woman, though she tried not to let it show. From the way AJ talked, he really had loved the woman and wanted to make it work. "You'll be fine, honey," she said with a comforting smile. "You tried and you followed your heart. There's a lot that's admirable in that. And now it's time for you to take care of you and tried out what it is that does make you really happy. She can do the same thing."
Kayla, of course, was a perfect distraction from such somber conversation. The moment that she was in AJ's arms, she delighted in wrapping her fingers in his hair just like Cate had predicted. The height didn't seem to faze her at all. "Well you just let me know if she gets to be a bother. You're natural with her, though." Probably the wrong thing to say considering what they'd just talked about regarding his ex.
"She'll be fine. She's got a streak of danger in her." Much to Cate's dismay, of course. "I just hope she doesn't like heights so much she decides to start climbing on everything."
