"As rough as it was, I'm glad I did it," AJ admitted. "There were some really beautiful spots. Especially out in the desert. Like you could get lost and nobody would ever find you..." Yeah, that was saying too much. He cleared his throat. "I'm afraid I didn't stop for those, but I did go right up to the edge of the Grand Canyon and take a picture. It was a long way down." God, that sounded lame. He was so lame.
That was comforting. AJ liked people who were honest and upfront. He never liked trying to second guess people. "Not fond of foreign cars, huh?" From her accent, she sounded Southern. With everything he'd learned so far, they were probably from some small town nearby and that meant a small town mechanic who probably wanted everybody to drive American cars. "It'll have to wait. Moving was really expensive. I'll take the advice."
AJ smiled a bit when she asked where he worked. "Trinidad Fire Department," he said. "They just got a rescue squad and I'm one of the paramedics. They said he does work on their engines when nobody else can fix them. So yeah, you guys came highly recommended."
Now that she knew he was a fireman, black coffee shouldn't surprise her. They all lived on caffeine. It was the only way to function after eight hours of a twenty-four hour shift. He took the mug with a smile and a brief thanks. That smile faded when she asked if he had any kids.
"No," he said. "My ex-wife wanted a career first." He took a drink of his coffee. "Are you and your husband thinking of having any more." She hadn't mentioned her relationship to the owner, with the baby and how well she knew him, AJ assumed Colin was her husband.
