Tad shook his head, feigning amicability. In truth, Bif was beginning to remind Tad why he'd always hated him.
"Of course not," he said. "I can understand why you felt the need to come back and see everything you left. You know, the lover you abandoned, find out who he replaced you with, see the friends who never really needed you, find out what's changed in the town that no longer remembers you." He smiled politely. "I can completely understand the need to come back and see how important—or, you know, whatever—you really were."
The drinks arrived just then, and Tad picked up his martini to take a sip. He kept his eyes on Bif over the rim of the glass.
