Tad looked away as Bif put the phial away. Bif had certainly never done that when they were in high school. He wondered what Derby would think. Derby never did that. He only drank a lot, like Daddy. Tad drank too.
"Just to the Vale Hotel," Tad answered Bif's question. "It's in the same place, but it's been renovated." He looked outside, gauging where they were. "We're almost there."
He could understand if Bif couldn't recognize the area. The mall expansion had changed this area a lot. "This is all Derby's family's doing, of course," he told Bif. "The whole place looks much more upscale than it did before, if you ask me. Now we just need to get the poor people out of New Coventry." Reflexively, as the car came to a stop, he checked his eye in the rearview mirror. "We thought of busing the homeless up the river, but they kept coming back."
