"Everyone at Harville had a driver," Tad said to Bif's back, and then began to follow him. Bif was taller, with much longer legs, and more in shape than Tad to boot. There was no way he could keep up with Bif's brisk pace without running, but Tad didn't want to be seen running to keep up with him. He also didn't trust Bif not to leave him behind. He compromised with a sort of awkward lope, all the while thinking about how much he hated Bif. He hoped Bif would get drunk and start talking about how much he missed Derby or other such rubbish. That would be humiliating.
He was so focused on his thoughts that he barely registered when they reached the school gates, and just barely prevented himself from running into Bif. That was going to be a tough save.
