Stop by the Comic Book Shop
Who: Lilly and Bette
Where: Shooting Star Comics
When: Early Monday Evening
Lilly walked inside of Shooting Star Comics. It was the middle of the afternoon, and she had a few hours before band rehearsal. She figured she'd stop by this place and waste a few hours, maybe pick up something to read while Paige and GInny fought over who should be dating who. Her band was turning into a fucking soap opera, and she wasn't sure she liked it.
"Well, I'll be DAMNED." Came the husky, slightly sarcastic-toned voice from behind the counter. "Lilly Maymin, as I live and breathe." Bette wore one of her beloved wigs today, this one a brunette bob, like a haircut from the 40's.
Lilly turned to the counter and sized the other girl up. "Do I know you?" she asked. She didn't quite look familiar, but what did that ever mean?
"No, not really... just a fan." Bette chuckled, extending a hand. "Bette Matthews. I've seen you guys play like... dozens of times."
"Really?" Lilly asked. She smiled and shook the other girl's hand. "Always good to meet a fan." Especially in kind of shitty times like this. She loved Paige, but she hoped that her stunt with Wilson wouldn't start enough shit to keep them from getting more fans and gigs.
"Yeah, the lyrics really hit me, you know? I've been through a lot of stuff in my life, and knowing other people can make it through really helps." This was probably the nicest and most sweet Bette had been in months.
Lilly nodded. "Ginny would love to hear that. You should talk to her after a show one night. I can introduce you if you'd like."
"That would be awesome, really!" She said with a bright smile. "Just don't go forgetting us little folk when you guys hit it big, ya know?"
She smiled a little. "I'll make sure not to forget anymore," she said.
"Thanks... that really means a lot." She said with a twinkling smile. "So what brings you to my little cubbyhole here?"
"Honestly, I've got a few hours before band practice," she said. "I figured I'd stop by here and maybe pick something up if it caught my interest."
"Well, depending on what yer into, we got a lot of stuff..." She motioned around to the racks of comics. "Never took any of you for comics readers, gotta admit."
"Everyone's gotta do something in their spare time," Lilly said with a shrug. "Do you carry any RPG books, actually?"
"...get the fuck outta here." She said with a surprised chuckle. "Yeah, we got a rack of 'em in the back. Mostly D&D, but we got a few of the lesser-known games too. Anything in particular you're lookin' for?"
"Like I said, we've all got our past times." She started toward the rack. "Nothing in particular. I tend to just pick up whatever strikes my fancy and try it out with a few friends. I found a book for an 'Army of Darkness' Game recently and tried it out. It was fun."
"Oh! Then, hell yeah, check it out. We sell our RPG books for 10% off cover price, just to try to get people to stay loyal, so... take that in mind if you see something you like."
"I'll make sure to do that," she said with a grin. "Got anything you recommend?"
"Alas... not much of an RPG gal m'self." Hey, she was honest, at least. "But we got some books for a new anime-themed game made by some little indy company that's been selling well..."
"Always worth checking out," she said, looking for a few seconds before finding the book herself.
"You guys playing Eden again soon?" Bette asked as Lilly made her way back to the front. "I'll make sure to get there for it. Haven't been clubbing much lately unless it's for a show."
She thought about it for a moment. "We're playing again on Saturday," Lilly said. "You definitely should come to the show. I'll make sure that you meet Ginny."
"Dude, you're awesome!" For an awkward moment, she almost looked ready to wrap Lilly in a big hug. "For the record... not that I think they're bad, but I like you guys a lot more than those girls that play Avarice. The ones your guitarist is always ragging on."
"Everyone has their own personal preferences," Lilly said more diplomatically. She had her personal opinions, personally, but knew, unlike Paige, when to keep her mouth shut about them. "It's great to hear that you like us, though."
With a laugh, she held up a finger. "Well, I gotta say, their drummer is nice enough though. She owns that coffee place that just opened right across the street... she's been nice enough to recommend my place to people when she sees them reading comics, or talking game-stuff, you know."
"You know, I've never actually met any of them, like, face to face," Lilly said. "I've seen them play, but I only know what I've heard about them."
"Hell, you girls should do a show with them sometime. It'd probably get TONS of press because of all the smack talking." And there she went again, hyper-planning everything. It served her well as a businesswoman, but made her seem odd as a person.
"It's something that's come up before," Lilly admitted. "However, Paige would start shit, and either get punched by Lexi again or get attacked by Delany." Shit like that just couldn't happen with Paige around, no matter what sort of pay day.
"There's all KINDS of wild rumors about Delany..." Bette said, her eyes going wide. "People have said she's a witch, she's a vampire, almost everything other than saying she's robot, really."
Lilly snorted. "Well, I'm pretty sure that she's not a robot," she admitted. "Past that, who the hell knows, really. I don't know the girl's personal life."
"I don't mean to sound like one of those 'second gunman on the grassy knoll' people, but I totally believe that shit's real, you know?" Bette backpedaled a bit. "Not robots, ya know? But the other stuff."
"Maybe," Lilly said. Sure, she actually knew it was all real. Meredith Delany wasn't the first vampire in a band, after all. Still, she had always been the type of person to hold all of her cards to her chest. "You never know what lurks in LA." She looked down at her watch. "I need to head out soon." She put the recommended RPG book on the counter. "I'll buy this, though."
"Dude. That rocks." She rang the book up, and carefully slipped in into a brown bag emblazoned with the store's logo. "I can't wait to tell everyone you actually shopped here."
"Sure, I'll give you a good recommendation and everything," Lilly said. "Maybe you can take a picture and put it up on the wall like some hair salons around here do."
"Hah! I'd love that, really. You guys are gonna be HUGE, I can feel it." And the strange part was, while the girl wasn't a psychic or anything... she had a strange knack for predicting things like this.
She handed over the money for the book. "See you again soon, Bette," she said with a wave and headed out the door.
