Well, This Is Unexpected
Who: Mere, Ben, and Patience
Where: Ben's Place
When: Same Night that She was Brought Back
Just before driving the still semi-conscious Patience Kowalski to his home, Ben had called Meredith, telling her to meet him at his place, ASAP. He couldn't tell her why over the phone... just that it was of utmost importance. Minutes later, he was helping the young woman stagger into his home, helping her over to his sofa, where he set her gingerly.
Mere had no idea why he had told her to come and meet him, but Ben didn't pull these 'emergencies' that often, so she figured that he was serious. She threw on a pair of jeans and a white tank and made her way over to his place and knocked on his door.
"How are you holding up, dear?" He asked, more tenderly than he was used to.
Patience gave Ben a kind of puzzled look, like she knew the words but not exactly sure how they connected. But the fog lifted a little and she whispered in a rough voice. "Like I have worms in my lungs." ...of course, that might've been true.
Ben heard the knock, and winced. "Ok... now, you need to just stay calm, and remember that anything I tell you is the truth." He stood in front of her, so his visitor could not immediately see her upon entering. "Mere? Is that you?"
"Yeah, it's me," Mere said back through the door. "Can I come in?"
"Yes... just prepare yourself... for what you're about to see." He moved aside as she entered. "Don't freak out."
"...OK..." Mere opened up the door and walked inside. When she opened up the door and saw Patience, her eyebrows arched up. "Last I heard, you were dead, sweetheart."
Patience blinked at that. "Oh. ...okay." Well, it sort of vaguely made sense and she definitely thought she remembered dying, so, yeah, she was willing to accept this. At least on a temporary basis.
"Way to use tact, Mere." Ben grumbled. "Patience? You've... been gone for almost two years, sweetheart. Meredith here... well... she's not exactly the same as she was when you knew her."
"Sorry, it's just not in me," Mere told him. "Things are way different now." She kept her mouth shut other than that, though. Let Ben be the bearer of bad news.
"..." Well, that, she didn't believe. It didn't feel like two years later. It felt like twenty minutes later. And she was willing to accept twenty minutes a lot faster than two years. "D-did you marry Ash?"
Mere giggled. "Boy, you really are out of the loop, aren't ya?" She looked toward Ben. "You have more tact than me, sweetheart. Maybe you should do the explaining."
"...ouch." Ben mumbled, wincing as he looked to Mere. "Agreed. Patience? Meredith... is dating me now. Your brother, well... your death had quite the dramatic effect on him."
She just kind of stared at both of them. Apparently her brain wasn't up to processing that kind of information. That was like turning around and finding out that your dog was actually a giraffe. It didn't work out.
"Hmm...I don't think she understands," Mere muttered. "Ash and I are no longer together. He's finally actually seeing someone else. The new guitarist for my band. She's cute. Goody goody, but cute."
"I don't know how much you remember... but the man who took you in... Richard Wilkins? He had you killed. To bring out the darkness in your brother." Ben said, his eyes fixed on hers.
"Ugh, lame much?" Mere mumbled. "He got what was coming to him."
"Oh. Is she nice?" Patience apparently decided to focus on the smaller details first, because she turned to Meredith first. Okay. So he'd broken up with Meredith. It happened. It possibly even would've happened if she'd still been alive. So it was a bit of a shock, but nothing she couldn't handle. Then she turned to Ben. "I'm sure it was all a mistake."
"Kind of what he needs, actually," Mere admitted to her.
"It wasn't. And when Ash found out... to put it mildly, he went into quite the downward spiral. He's only now starting to come out of it. Which is where you come in." He placed a hand on Patience's shoulder. "Your brother needs you"
"Dancing the black spiral of death and destruction." Patience mumbled to herself, and took a breath. Which brought up that weird phlegm combination of formaldehyde and dirt flecks again. She grabbed a Kleenex and spat into that. "I need him."
Mere personally thought that what she needed was a shower because of the reek of chemicals was getting to her, but she kept her mouth shut. "So, can I break the news to Ash that his sister is alive? Or is this another thing that requires tact?"
Ben turned and looked at Meredith with a smirk. "No offense, babe... but I think this should be done by someone who's not risking a stake through the heart if Ash decides you're screwing with him."
Mere shrugged. "Good point, there. He does not take kindly to jokes," she said, remembering the flash bang of sun incident.
"Patience. Once you're reunited with your brother... he'll catch you up on.... everything else." He wasn't ABOUT to go into where Patrick was these days.
"Lots of catching up to do, too," Mere said. She wondered when anyone was going to tell Pat. He was someone who *really* needed to hear this more than anything.
"What about Pat?" Patience asked fretfully.
"....Ashton will catch you up on everyone else." Ben said evasively. "If you're... feeling up to it, I'll take you to your brother. Let me just... call him first, slowly tell him exactly what is going on."
Very slowly, Mere thought to herself. He was going to flip his blond little lid when he was told this.
"But... Pat. I want to see Pat." Patience frowned and stumbled towards the door, caught herself, and started walking with slightly more dignity.
Mere arched an eyebrow at Ben. "Might want to tell her something..." she pointed out.
"Just.... talk to your brother first. And then, I promise you'll know everything you want to know." Ben sighed, rubbing his forehead.
"I'mma go see Pat now." Yeah, she still had the stubborn-as-a-damn-mule thing.
Well, some things never change. "Why don't you let one of us kind of...well, let him know that you all back from the dead now? Don't want him trying to stake your or something, OK?" Mere pointed out to her.
"A good idea." Ben said, not wanting to quite tell her about Gwen and Skylar yet.
"... you can phone him while I shower?" She gave them both a hopeful look.
"Sure, we'll give him a jingle," Mere said, looking toward Ben.
"God dammit." Ben grumbled, sitting down next to Patience. "Fine." He looked at Meredith. "I don't see how I have a choice here."
Mere just shrugged. "Why don't you let me call him? Can't stake me over the phone, can he?"
"....fine. Call him. And tell him everything. And that... as soon as she talks to her brother, he can come see her."
"Sure, I'll get right on that boss," Mere said to him with a wink. She wasn't sure how the hell he did this, but both Pat and Ash needed it right now.
