Talking About Prom, the Future, and Chuck Norris
Who: Andrew and Ami
Where: Ami's Bedroom
When: About a week before Prom
Ami had invited Andrew over to Wesley's place to hang out, and hopefully try to figure out how to start putting the pieces of the fragmented past together. She'd embarrassed herself by panicking and insisting to Wesley that no monkey business would ensue by having a boy in her room, then realizing Wesley wasn't even going to ask. So now, she sat in her room, wearing a comfy pair of pajamas she'd gotten thanks to Wesley's generous use of his credit cards, waiting for her company.
Andrew had been shown up to Ami's room by Wesley. He had insisted that nothing would happen between them, but that seemed only to make Wesley chuckle. Andrew had no idea why. Did he think that no girl would touch him, either? Why did everyone think that? "Hi, Ami," he said once he finally entered her room.
"Andrew! Hi!" She said, sounding far too excited for someone who, to him, barely knew him. "C'mon in... I'm wicked bored."
He walked further into the room, taking a chair from the desk in the room and sitting down at it. "So, other than bored, how have you been doing?"
"Better... adjusting a little better, at least knowing I have some people I can be real with." The wispy blond curled up cutely, arms folding over her tank-top clad chest. "I'm surprised you didn't decide I was crazy and call the funny farm."
"I once tried to unleash flying monkeys on Sunnydale High School's production of Romeo and Juliet," Andrew pointed out to her. "The things I've seen and tried to do are pretty crazy as well."
"...touche." She said, a little giggle escaping her lips as she visualized it. "So... I started thinking about everything that happened... when I told it all to you, something occurred to me: just telling people about what happened couldn't have made the drastic changed that happened, could it have?"
"The only way that telling people could change anything was if they had used the information to change their actions," Andrew surmised. "Did anything like that actually happen?"
"That's what I've been thinking, the only question is who would do it? I mean... who would benefit from changing things, even if it meant at the expense of others?" She sighed. "This is gonna take some serious thought over the next few days."
Andrew shrugged. "Do you even remember who all you told about this?"
"Most of the Slayers, a few of the Watchers... I admit, it got a little out of hand. I panicked." She grumbled.
"Well, people tend to panic when they tell about the end of the world to others," Andrew said. "Have you seen everyone you told since you got back around?"
"No... I've been keeping to myself, until I tracked down you and Wesley." Ami said, nibbling sweetly on her bottom lip.
He nodded. "You may want to check on some of the others. See how they are doing. Well, the ones that you can check on."
"Yeah... I know..." She sighed, trying to get herself back in a better mood. "You know, you get the cutest little scrunchy-face thing going when you're thinking..."
"Me? Cute?" Obviously she had lost her head on that one. "Sure, if you say so."
She shook her head and laughed. "Andrew... one day you'll understand." She grinned, those big, bright eyes looking almost heartrendingly innocent and adorable.
"Maybe," he said with a shrug. "I'll just have to take your word on that one."
"Trust me when I say this: if anyone knows, it's me. In the future, you had a loving girlfriend who would have done ANYTHING for you. Play your cards right, and that can still happen." She said with a sweet smile.
He tilted his head at her in slight confusion. "Really? You're not just saying that so when I get to the future, you can point at me and laugh?"
"Trust me. She's a little goofy, but adored you with everything she was." Ami said with a soft coo.
"OK," he said, smiling just a tad. He had no clue who would want him that much, but he'd just have to take her word on that.
"Once I realized who you were in my future, I started to realize a LOT about you."
"Really? Like what?"
"Well... promise not to get all freaked out, and think that any of this means you have to do anything you don't wanna?" She asked, a little afraid of saying anything nowadays.
"Um...ok," he said, feeling a little cautious himself right about now. "I won't get all freaked out."
"Well, in MY time, at least... somehow you figured out time-travel and got stuck or something... because I'm from 18 years in the future, and where I was, you were there, but only about two years older than me. Don't ask, I suck at math." She shook her head. "But the important thing... we were together. You and I."
"I time traveled?" He kind of had been working on something. Mechanics wasn't his thing as much as it was others, but he did love the math of it. "And you and I were together?"
"Yeah, like, inseparable, really. You looked a little different..." she cringed. "Don't freak out, but in my time, you kinda got a few scars at some point. But you looked so similar, and the voice was less cynical, but when you mentioned Timothy Dalton, that sealed it, and I knew it was you. I realized that the only difference was that everyone called you Drew there."
"Everyone calls me Drew?" The only nickname he had ever had was Drewsy, and that was what Dawn liked to call him. "Scars, cynical? What did I go through?"
"You didn't like to talk about it. We bonded, because we had a mutual love for a lot of really great sci-fi things. You said you felt like you could be your old self around me." She shrugged. "Never said much about your past, which is probably good, really."
"Probably for the best," Andrew said. He wouldn't want to change his past, or future, especially if he was going to end up with her.
"But... if it helps your self-esteem any? You were pretty much the best boyfriend I could want. Seriously." She gave a sad smile.
He smiled back at her. "Well, I know that I'd try my butt off to be the best for someone as pretty as you."
She reached over, and gently placed her hand on top of his. "Well... it's never too early or late to start..." she honestly seemed like the sweetest, gentlest soul alive. Which, if you knew her parents, was vaguely hilarious.
He smiled back at her. "I wouldn't mind getting a head start on wooing you."
"Well... whenever you feel like you're ready..." she gave another little grin, a slight blush creeping onto her cheeks. "I'll be waiting." She knew that, if this was the time in his life she thought it was, he was probably still mooning a little over his best friend. So... for now? No use pushing him.
He nodded. "Thanks," he said.
"You still have this look... and this tone... that tell me you think I'm humoring you, or just trying to make you feel good." She said, sounding a little sad. She wasn't used to seeing him this way.
"Sorry, it's just kind of the way I am, or what I'm used to, I guess." He shrugged. "I can't imagine being this bad ass guy who's confident. Pretty much an anathema to me. I'm not trying to sound like a loser."
"You're not a loser! Ever!" She almost squeaked, folding her arms defensively. "So don't talk like that, ok?"
"Alright, I'll try not to say that I'm a loser," he said, even though he was still pretty much convinced that he was. Then again, she was going with him to Prom, right? He couldn't be that much of a loser if he had a pretty date to Prom.
"TRUST me, we're gonna have a GREAT time at the dance. I won't spaz out TOO bad, and I might even look like I know what I'm doing." She said with a sage nod.
"Well, we can look like spazes together, because I don't really know how to dance, either," Andrew pointed out to her. Well, there was that one lesson from Dawn, but all of the trauma afterward kind of blocked it out.
"Well, all I know is you're gonna look SO 007 in a tux. Seriously." She said with a grin, knowing that would make him beam.
He did smile at her. "You really think so?" he asked. Of course, he didn't realize that nearly any guy could look awesome in a tux if it fit right, but whatever.
"Of course!" She said, a sweet smile on that pale face. "License to kill and everything!"
"Well, I don't think they hand those out to just anyone, but looking the part does sound like a lot of fun," Andrew said to her, still smiling.
"Wait till you see my dress. Pret-ty nice, I gotta say." She said with a little grin.
"Is it?" Andrew barely knew anything about dresses except that they were usually long and typically only girls wore them. "What does it look like?"
"Oh, like I'm gonna tell you!" She laughed. "As it is, the news about the future I'm gonna give you is gonna eclipse my dress... at least seeing it will be a surprise."
"Well, I figured I'd ask, anyway," he said with a slight grin. "So, what news are you keeping from me, anyway?"
"I'd tell you now... but it's going to be the best news you've gotten in years, and it's gonna make prom the best night EVER for you." She said with a sage nod.
"Is that so?" Andrew asked. He couldn't imagine what it was that she had to tell him. "Now I have to know it."
"Hm." She thought about it, then got a big, wicked grin that would tell anyone who didn't know that she was definitely related to Gwen. "Well. If I tell you NOW, what do I get in return?"
"Well...I don't know. What do you want in return?" Andrew asked innocently.
"I want a guarantee that if not sometime BEFORE prom, that at the dance you'll find the gumption to give me a kiss." She said triumphantly, crossing her arms as if she'd just said something truly outrageous.
"Uh...sure. I'll try to find the gumption to kiss you by Prom," he said. He never thought that he'd hear *that* coming from a girl toward him.
"Alright." She looked around, as if she held the secret to the universe in her mind... and leaned in, the way someone would lean in for a kiss. Tilting her head, she whispered into his ear. "Here it is. I know you were very disappointed in The Phantom Menace. Well... buck up. Episode Two is a lot better, and Episode Three? So good it'll bring TEARS to your eyes."
His eyes widened. "Are you sure? Are you really, really sure? Does Jar-Jar die a horrible and flamey death of being bitten by radioactive monkeys? How does it get better?"
"I'm not gonna ruin it for you... but I'll say this much. Anakin and Obi-Wan have a kick-ass duel on a lava planet, and Jar-Jar has maybe six minutes of screen time between both movies. TOPS." She said with a big grin.
"Oh thank the gods," he said, especially about the last part. Jar-Jar had really ruined for him what could have been at least a decent movie. Well, maybe not decent, but at least tolerable.
"See... the look on your face right now is EXACTLY what I was hoping for. I knew it! Best gift I could give you outside of finding a way to SHOW you the movies."
"Showing them to me might make the world implode in some way, so this is a great surprise that doesn't make the world implode!" Andrew said. He didn't want the world to implode just because his girlfriend (of sorts) wanted to show him a movie or two.
"I still have to find out who my Watcher is gonna be here. I guess... they're rebuilding the whole Council, and even though I'm not from this time, Mr. Giles is going to get me a Watcher." The blond muttered nervously. "I'm grateful, but kinda nervous all at once."
"I'm sure that he'll be able to find you someone," he said. He had heard about what had happened to the Watcher's Council. It seemed that supernatural gossip spread fast, even down to the likes of him.
"One of the girls actually got a super young Watcher. A kid our age that they JUST recruited." She said with big eyes. "I mean, it's cool for him, but that's gotta sting for her."
"Really? Who did she get?" Andrew asked. It might even be someone that he knew.
"Angsty, skinny blond kid named Kowalski." She said. "Seen him around school, but never talked to him. Seems like a quiet, loner type."
Andrew tilted his head a little. "Ashton Kowalski?" he asked with a slight squeak.
"Yeah, that's him. Creepy kid, but... heck, I guess he's dating Chloe Van Warren's younger sister now, so I guess he can't be THAT bad..." She shrugged.
"Um...someone might want to tell Chloe that Ash has a few...anger issues that I'm still not sure that he's dealt with," Andrew said. Sure, the guy saved his life once from a vampire, but he also tried to strangle him once. Life was crazy like that.
"He does?" She asked with a little squeak. Ami and Chloe weren't exactly BFF's, but they got along well enough. She didn't want the girl's sister to get hurt. "Maybe I should keep an eye on him..."
"Well, Ash has...a history of..." He wasn't sure how to put this at all. "We got in a fight once, over Dawn, actually. They were dating, and a whole lot of drama happened that I *really* don't know if I can emotionally handle going into again, but it ended with him trying to strangle me in front of the entire school until Meredith Delany pulled him off of me, and that was before she was a vampire, because she was still in school and stuff. I think that might be how they met. So, I can be blamed for *that* disaster, too, probably."
She couldn't help but snicker now, shaking her head. "I don't think even your worst enemy could find a way to link you to Meredith becoming a vampire, Andrew. Although it would be interesting to see them try."
"No, but he could blame me for kind of introducing him to someone that he'd fall for and get hurt over when she was turned," Andrew pointed out.
Snickering again, she shook her head there. "I think you're overworrying there. Besides, like I'd let anyone hurt you? It's like you have your own personal Chuck Norris at your side here."
"Like a much prettier Chuck Norris with no facial hair," he said. "Hey, did you know that there is no chin under Chuck Norris's beard, only another fist?"
"I've heard that. And that at night? Before going to sleep? The Bogeyman checks under his bed for Chuck Norris." Yeah, Ami had heard them all. But come on. FUTURE, PEOPLE. She sighed cutely, almost swooning. Yes, swooning. Over ANDREW. "I forgot how much I love spending time with you..."
"Really? Well, did you know that Chuck Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise," he said. Oh, Andrew knew the dorkiest ones of all, actually. "You really love spending time with me?"
"Of course I do. The future isn't too different than right now in some ways... like the fact that most boys only want one thing from a girl. You always liked me for who I am, not what I look like. We hung out, we talked about cheesy sci-fi movies... and you made me feel like a PERSON, not a piece of meat."
"Well, you are a person. I never got that analogy, anyway. Isn't a person always a person, not a piece of meat? Well, unless that person is like, a vampire or something, then they're not a real person, usually." He shook his head. "Sorry, got distracted. You'll always be a person to me."
She looked deeply into his eyes, a look that held the love and adoration of someone who'd clearly known him for quite a while, and was completely enamored. "...don't ever change, Andrew. The other girls can have their big, macho jocks. I'll take my lovable, adorable dork any day of the week."
He blinked. "Sure, I'll never change." He kind of doubted that he really knew how. He certainly couldn't control the rambly thing that he did sometimes when his brain got distracted by a subject.
"Good." She leaned in and slowly wrapped her arms around him, giving him a rather adorable hug.
He hugged her back. It felt good to hug someone. His parents were as far from affectionate as anyone could get, and his brother, well, had this penchant for locking him in closets and the like.
"Of course... now that I gave you your good news... now I don't have anything to surprise you with on prom night..." She squeaked with a little giggle.
"Well, I'm sure I'll be surprised by how lovely you look in your dress," Andrew pointed out to her.
"Play your cards right..." she said with a nervous laugh, trying her best to channel her inner Gwen. "You might see how lovely I look OUT of it too."
His eyes widened. "Um, OK, wow," he said, looking down at his feet because he was blushing so bad.
"Wow, indeed." She said, blushing almost as bad. "Sorry about that. Wasn't trying to sound as trampy as I did..."
"No, it didn't sound trampy," he said, still looking down. "It's just...no girl has ever shown any sort of interest in me before, at least, that I remember."
"That's because no girl's taken the time to get to know the real you. Which is their loss, really. You're geeky, silly, and funny. And it makes me happy." She smiled.
"Well, I like making you happy, so that's good," Andrew said with a smile.
"Let's... worry more about making each OTHER happy, Andrew. Not just me. You deserve it." The blond said, snuggling up to him.
