A Gift
Who: Baily and Pat
Where: Jolt! Coffee
When: Tuesday Afternoon
Baily was sitting in Jolt! Coffee, getting herself a cup of caffeinated pleasure before work tonight. She was supposed to be on all night, since the other DJ was out sick. Didn't really bother her much, but that did mean that she needed to keep awake at the booth tonight, instead of running off to take a nap like she did when the other DJ came on during most nights. She sipped her drink at a table in a corner, in hopes of keeping people away from her, at least random people that she didn't know.
Pat had been a little... tired lately, truthfully. Between helping Skylar get everything set up for the coming baby, helping her get things squared away with her band, and practicing with his own... he was feeling a little spread out. With slight bags under his eyes, he stopped into the coffee shop on his way to practice, ordering the strongest latte they made, then standing at the counter as he sipped it.
Baily spotted Pat standing at the bar. "Hey, you're looking a little worn out today? Pregnant wife got you making midnight craving runs?" she joked lightly to him.
Pat looked over and smiled, seeing Baily. Somehow, remarkably, he'd begun to develop something of a bond with the usually standoffish lycan girl. Of course... he'd finally begun to realize WHY he got along so well with her, but nobody needed to hear that. "Hey... how's it going, kiddo?"
"Not too bad. I'm having to cover for the other DJ tonight, so I'm basically pulling a double, but I'm doing good," she told him, taking a sip of her drink. "How are you actually doing?"
"Not too bad, really. Just exhausted. I got my own band gearing up for recording and playing shows, I'm trying to help keep Skylar as stress-free as possible, trying to still make sure she has fun, and I'm trying to help her keep her own band from falling apart." He sighed witha tired smile. "So... yeah."
"Stretched a little thin then," Baily said. "I'd say that you need a little 'Pat time,' but I'm not sure when you are going to get it with all of that going on." She gave a shrug. "Try yoga. I hear that helps people find their centers or some junk."
When I have 'Pat time', usually it gets VERY tiring." He laughed with a playful wink. "At least Skylar likes it. Hell... it's her idea half the time."
She arched an eyebrow at him. "Wasn't talk about *that* kind of time, yeah...." She laughed. "Good to hear that you're still getting some, though." She winked back at him.
"Yeah, yeah... like you're not? You think I don't notice that little dimpled smile you got going all the time now? For a girl as cynical as you... only one thing makes you smile like THAT." He laughed, his mind telling him that getting close to her was stupid and would only hurt him, but doing so anyway.
She stuck her tongue out at him, but was still smiling. Considering this girl didn't usually take people joking with her very well, it was an amazing accomplishment. "Yeah, I'm smiling a little more, but so what? Everyone deserves a little happiness, even me."
"You're a good kid, Baily. You deserve to be happy." He smiled, a bit more sadly than he'd intended. "You remind me a lot of the coolest, most amazing person I ever knew. So... consider yourself complimented."
She grinned at him. "I will consider myself complimented." She wasn't sure who he was talking about, since she wasn't like Skylar at all, but just figured it was someone special.
"Damn right." He said, digging into his pocket as they talked. "As a matter of fact... I have something here... something I'd like you to have."
"Really?" She asked, arching an eyebrow. "What is it?"
He pulled from his pocket, a slightly stained white-gold ring, with small wording engraved inside it. It said, "PK/PM - Eternity" and it was now on an old, sterling silver necklace. "I'd like you to have this. I swore I'd only get rid of it if... I ever met someone who really deserved it. But... it once belonged to a wonderful, unique girl... and I think she'd approve of you having it."
She smiled at him, accepting the necklace and putting it around her neck. "Thank you so much Pat," she said sincerely. She understood just how much this had to mean to him. "Who is PK?" She knew he had a wife that died, so maybe it was her.
A few years back... before I was anyone, really... I fell in love with a girl named Patience Kowalski. I'm about to marry Skylar, and don't get me wrong... I love her with everything I am." He smiled sadly and closed his eyes. "And luckily, she's strong enough to know that while we love each other dearly... Patience was my one true soulmate."
Kind of sucks for Skylar, Baily though to herself. For once, though, she managed to hold a comment back. "What happened to her?" she asked instead.
"She..." He cleared his throat, mostly to avoid choking back tears. "Let's just say I have many reasons to hate vampires. Many."
"I see," Baily said. Definitely a reason to hate vampires then. He just didn't seem to have much luck with them, since they seem to keep eating the people that he loved and such.
"Yeah. Look... I know you're not the mushy, emotional type. Just... keeping this doesn't seem right. And I knew I could only give it to someone... you know... that she'd approve of. And you're a good friend, kid. She'd have loved you."
Baily did smile at that. "I'm not the gushy type. Not by a long shot. This does mean a lot to me, though. Even if I'm not quite getting it across right." Emotions weren't really Baily's thing. Everyone knew that about her. But she was really touched by this.
"Yeah, well..." He decided to just act like it was no big deal. God forbid he started blubbering here in public. "Anyway... I gotta head out. I just... like I said, you're a good kid. Hard to believe you're related to Ben." He said with a laugh.
"Hard to believe anyone is related to Ben," Baily said with a grin. "I'm starting to think that he was hatched from an egg somewhere. I'll see you later, though. Take care of yourself."
