Not a Meeting of Like Minds
Who: Skylar and Megan
Where: Skylar and Pat's house
When: Monday Afternoon
Megan had been fearing this moment for a while now, while also being quite excited about it. Meeting her Slayer for the first time. She hoped the girl would be the type who would actually listen to her, and not give her attitude. So, dressed in a sleek black and red pantsuit, she ran a hand through her short black hair and smirked, knocking on the front door.
A not huge, but visibly pregnant Skylar answered the door. She had been napping on the couch with Artemis sleeping on top of her, and was now weaving in and out between her legs as she stood in front of the door in a pair of denim cut offs and a tank top. "Can I help you?"
"Yes... is Skylar James here?" Megan asked, raising a slim brow.
"Um...that would be me," Skylar said. "Is there something I can do for you?"
With all the kindness she had (which was none), she said in her sardonic, almost weary voice. "My name is Megan Baxter. I'm your new Watcher."
Skylar arched an eyebrow at her. "Have you people never heard of calling or something? Sometimes a little news would be nice." Even though it was daylight, she thought of something else. "Got any credentials that I can check?"
"....they never even told you I was coming? Christ." Megan shook her head. "Call Wyndam-Pryce... he supposedly was notified. Why he didn't tell you, I have no idea."
"Wesley's been...I don't know what to call it lately," Skylar admitted. "He's in a nasty funk, that's about all I know." Maybe she should have insisted that he stayed here longer. He had seemed find, only to start avoiding calls once he was gone. "Right now, I'll take your word. She opened the door further, but never said the actual 'come in'.
"Well... at least you're still sharp enough to not invite me in..." she walked in, wry smile on her lips. "Granted, it's broad daylight... but still Good thinking."
"Vampires are much more tricky in the U.S. than most people give them credit for," Skylar pointed out. "One day they might get a hold of some SPF one million sunblock and run around just fine in broad daylight. Better safe that sorry." She shut the door behind her.
She took a long look at Skylar, and sighed under her breath. "Pregnant, too. Wonderful." She walked in a circle around the girl. "So you know, this doesn't entitle you to any breaks in training. I doubt seriously that a vampire is going to give a damn if you're crowning in mid-brawl."
"If I can help it, I'm going to be in a hospital when I'm crowning, not fighting a vampire." Oh, this was going to be splendid. "Need I remind you that, first off, I am not a child or even teenager that you can order around, and secondly, you have obviously never actually dealt with a pregnant woman if you think you can order her around, Slayer or not. You want this to work, you need to work with me, not order me around."
"Oh. And she has an attitude as well. Lovely." Megan sighed, and locked eyes on Skylar for a moment. "I apologize if I'm not lovable and fun like Narcissa was. But I assure you... my goal is the same. Keep you alive."
"I understand that," Skylar pointed out. "Narcissa just understood that ordering a girl around didn't always work out the way you think it will." It still hurt to talk about her, knowing what had happened. Knowing what Wesley still kept in his dresser. "We're going to have to come to some sort of compromise."
"Unlike some of my peers... I am not here to be your friend, or your role model. I am here to do what I can to help you stay alive, and help keep innocent people alive. If you choose to like me, grand. If not, that's not my problem. What matters is that you listen to me, and acknowledge that any order I give you, I give with your best interests at heart."
"Frankly, I'm not sure we'd be all of great pals, anyway," Skylar said to her. "I get where you're coming from. I really do. However, in a couple of months, it's not so much that things like patrolling and training won't just be uncomfortable, they will be physically impossible. Has the Council ever had a pregnant Slayer before?"
"I know it's happened, but I have no clue how it was handled." She crossed her arms, looking Skylar over. She was easily one of, if not the oldest of the active slayers, but she still looked and dressed like a rock-n-roll teenager. "Are you married?"
Skylar lifted up her hand that held the engagement ring Pat had gotten her. "Almost. Why do you ask?"
"Just wondered." She said, holding back a smirk, as she privately wondered if the girl had just... gone and gotten knocked up by accident.
If only she knew Skylar. "So, what do we work out then? As far as patrolling goes, there are plenty of girls who seem more than willing to pick up the bit of slack that exists with me being out right now, so no worry there. What else, a training schedule?"
"For now, we try to keep you out of immediate danger, while at the same time increasing your training regiment." She was talking quickly, not unlike an army drill Sergent. "From the looks of it, I'm guessing you haven't had serious training in at least six months."
"There about," Skylar said. "I've exercised, but nothing Slayer worthy." She didn't want to get huge, after all. "I'm not even sure exactly what all I can do without endangering the baby."
"I think you'll find your child to be rather resilient, and much too tough to use as an excuse to slack off." She folded her arms across her chest, smirking now. "We'll be training for three hours a day, until you reach your third trimester, when we'll have to cut down to half that time, and with far less strenuous exercises."
"First thing that goes wrong, this training schedule goes out the window. I care about being a Slayer, I really do. But right now the life I care most about is the one growing inside of me, got it?" Skylar asked, looking completely serious. "If she's as resilient as you think she will be, which I hope she is, I think we can at least work together."
"I would hope so. Because while I might not be as... lenient as your last watcher, I can make you the best slayer you can possibly be." She said, a slight sneer on her lips.
"Never know what the future holds," Skylar said with a slight smirk of her own.
"Does your..." she motioned to the ring on Skylar's finger. "Partner know about your destiny? And will he get in the way?"
"He knows. He knows the whole drill. I think he'll be fine with me training again, just not the patrolling while pregnant part," Skylar said.
"Good. Then... I'll be going home now." She turned on her heel. "I suggest you get some rest, dear." She said the word 'dear' not with the sweetness that Narcissa might have, but with more of a sarcastic tone. "Starting tomorrow... the free ride is over."
Skylar wondered if this woman still remembered that she could still beat her ass six ways from Sunday even while pregnant. Evidently not. "We'll get started tomorrow then."
"Bet on it." Megan said, walking out with an annoyingly cocky look on her face.
