Surprises Are In Store
Who: Angie and Hiroshi
Where: Japan, their high school front steps
When: Monday afternoon

Angie was sitting on the front steps of her high school, waiting endlessly for her mother to come and pick her up. She was already twenty minutes late. Sure, she worked at the embassy, and had very important work, but could she still try and be on time to pick up her own daughter from school so that she wouldn't look like a total loser in front of everyone?

"Hey there, foxy lady!" From behind her came the voice of her friend Hiroshi, mercifully unaware of how much he was sounding like Long Duk Dong from 'Sixteen Candles'. "Your mom is late again?"

Angie looked up at him with a small grin. "Yeah, she's late again. You'd think she'd just let me start walking home, but she insists on picking me up."

"Or better yet, perhaps buy you used auto or something!" He grinned. He understood English perfectly, and spoke it fluently... but he occasionally sounded a bit... wooden in his delivery.

She understood what he meant. He actually spoke English much better than most people did here. "That would be nice, wouldn't it. I'm not even sure where I'd put a car, though."

He sat down beside her, even though he could have left already to walk home himself. "I will wait with you then." He said, smiling.

She returned his smile. "Thank you, Hiroshi," she said. "So, how was your day?"

"Oh, Angie..." He said witha whimsical tone. "You know every day in which I get to hang out with you is good day."

She laughed a little. "I never know what to say when you say things like that!" she said with a slightly nervous giggle.

"You should be used to it! No way am I the onyl boy who pays you compliments!" He said, a bit surprised there.

She shook her head. "No, you are the only one, Hiroshi."

"Wow... all this time, and I never realized I was the onyl smart boy in school..." he replied, sounding sweetly sincere.

Angie blushed, looking down at her feet for a moment. "I don't know, I just don't interact with a lot of other people, either."

"I suppose I am hoping that having more friends now will make you see how special you are..." he said, referring obviously to Dot and Satsu (since they were honestly the only real friends either had besides each other).

She shrugged. Sure, Hiroshi and her were best friends, but he was really her only friend, other than now Dot and Satsu. She was just...shy around most other people at times. She had just seen Dot and, having gone through the new girl thing herself, wanted to help her out. "I guess we'll have to see about that."

Without giving it a lot of thought, Hiroshi did what he'd been wanting to do for... oh, about two years. He quickly tilted over and gave her a little peck on the lips. Yeah, to him? That was a major leap of courage.

Angie blinked in surprise when he did that. She had honestly never expected her first kiss to be on the steps of her high school in Japan. Not sure where she was thinking of where it would be, but at school was kind of not high on the list. "Wow."

"I am sorry if that... I mean.... I wasn't thinking properly..." he backpedaled, as if afraid she was going to sock him in the mouth.

"No, it's OK." It was actually far more than OK, but she just wasn't sure how to put it into works at all right now. "Don't be sorry."

He pulled out his Game Boy, starting to play as they talked, trying to act like it never happened, since, to him, she looked more mortified than shocked. "So... study hall was very productive... got to play Pokemon for a while."

Did he now regret kissing her? Oh dear, she had messed up, didn't she? "I got a little reading done as well," she said, starring down at her shoes again.

"I'm not good at distracting myself." He admitted, looking down at the ground in embarrassment. "Please do not be angry I kissed you?"

"I'm not angry, Hiroshi," Angie said to him. She still looked at her feet as she spoke. "I do like you, I like you a lot, actually. I worry about our friendship, though. I don't want to lose it."

"I understand completely." And he did. They were, for all intents and purposes, all they had.

"Do you think you can promise that we won't lose our friendship?" she asked, finally looking up at him.

"No matter what, I would rather be friends than nothing." He answered, hoping it came off better than it sounded in his head.

"Me as well," she said to him. With that, she leaned forward and kissed him on the lips this time.

He blinked a few times, dumbfounded, before finally speaking as she pulled away. "Th-thank you! I didn't think you liked me in that way..."

She laughed. Boys really didn't get hints, did they? "I was worried about our friendship," she said to him.

Boys did, sometimes... but Hiroshi could be thicker than a brick wall. "Perhaps I take too many hits to the head..." he laughed, throwing a few faux-punches in the air. He did mixed martial-arts as a hobby... but tended to get beaten more than he won.

"Maybe you do," Angie said with a slight laugh. "I think we can work around that, though."
