Distant Relatives
Who: Shannan and Neely
Where: Shattered Records
When: Sunday Afternoon, March 13
It didn't take make research on Shannan's part to locate some of the distant cousins she knew were living within the city limits of Los Angeles. And it was with that little bit of knowledge that Shannan wandered into Shattered Records. True it wasn't where Bennett Bale resided, but the woman did own and work at the shop.
Neely was behind the main counter with Emmy, discussing the store losses (oh yes, there were actually discussing serious business, stop the presses!) and how to try to minimize them, when Shannan made her way in. The blond smiled and gave her a wave, before getting back to what she was doing for a moment.
While she had a name, Shannan didn't have much of a description on her cousin, and so she could have taken either woman at the counter to be her cousin. Rather then make an embarrassing mistake, Shannan decided to go with a direct approach as she walked toward the counter and the two women. "I was wondering if either of you might be Bennett Bale." She asked with a pleasant smile.
Neely arched an eyebrow at the blond. "Only my mom calls me that." And her dad... And her brothers, if they wanted to annoy her, but anyway... "I prefer 'Neely'." She rounded the counter and approached the other woman. "Do I... Know you?"
"Neely." Shannan replied back with a slight nod of her head. "It's nice to meet you." She added with a slow extension of her hand to the other woman and a smile. "I'm Shannan Bale." It was a little bit exciting and a bit nervous to Shannan to actually be meeting a relative whom she knew very little about other then they lived in the city she had moved to. Hopefully this side of the Bale family would be a friendly lot like her own family back home in Boston.
"Wow," Neely replied with a chuckle, shaking Shannon's hand politely. "I didn't realize there were still Bale's that I haven't met yet," she admitted. Then again, it was a pretty big family, so it shouldn't be that surprising. "Nice to meet ya."
"Yeah," Shannan smiled, "my great grandfather and your great grandfather. It's a distant relations type thing, which explains the whole not having met yet." Shannan tried explaining to her distant relative. "When I learned I had relatives in the area I figured I'd take the first step in trying to meet some of them."
"Well, awesome. It's always nice to meet someone new," Neely beamed. Luckily she refrained from hitting on Shannan when she first saw her, hm? That would have been awkward. "Do you wanna head up to my office and have a talk?"
"That would be great." Shannan continued smiling to the other woman and readied to follow Neely up to her mentioned office.
Neely smiled at Shannan and slowly led her upstairs, winking at Payton as they went upstairs while she went down. She opened the office door and let Shannan inside, before closing the door behind him. "So, what is it you do with yourself, Shannan? Work-wise?"
Following Neely into the office, Shannan made herself comfortable by settling into one of the chairs with a casual crossing of her legs. "I'm a doctor. Just recently relocated to L.A. from Boston." The older blond answered. And since she knew what Neely did for a living, Shannan felt there was really no point in asking that question of her distant cousin.
"That's impressive," Neely replied, sitting in a chair opposite Shannan, rather than behind her desk. You didn't put family on the other side of furniture, after all. As to why Neely was so willing to accept what Shannan said? Well, you'd need only to look at her to know that she was a Bale... that, and Neely was pretty good at scenting when people lied, if she did say so herself. "How're you liking it here so far?"
"It's quite a change from Boston, but I'm liking the city. And to be working at Los Angeles General, well a lot of doctors would kill for a chance to work at the renown hospital. Though not literally, mind you." Shannan added with a soft, little laugh.
"I guess that'd go against the oath that you have to take," Neely replied with a laugh. "You have another cousin that you should meet - " Well, she wasn't technically lying there, " - Her name's Bastian. Last I heard, she wanted to become a doctor as well." Hey, come on. How often was it that she got to meet a distant relative, hm?
"Oh," Shannan smiled a bit surprised, though pleasantly so, to hear that, "I will definitely have to meet this other cousin, Bastian." Shannan loved what she did, even with the long hours she had to put in each day at the hospital, and if she could possibly help someone else who might have the same passion for the profession that she had. Well, there was just no question in regards to what Shanna would do.
"Awesome. I'll try to set something up next time she's in town," Neely promised with a smile, since Bastian was still off on tour with Meeghan. "My brothers live here also... and roughly a dozen other cousins, as well, if you wanna get into contact with them. We're pretty big on family get togethers, OH. You should totally come for Easter." Oh yes. It was decided.
"Sounds like my family." Shannan relayed to her cousin. "And I'd love to." The blond doctor practically beamed at the offer. Shannan knew she wouldn't be able to make it back home for the holiday due to work, but she might be able to manage a couple hours with her distant relatives here in L.A.
"Awesome," Neely beamed, before grabbing a spare sheet of paper from one of the draws in her desk. "Obviously you know where I work, but you're welcome to come visit me at my place. Just... um, y'know, don't be bothered if my wife (Rachelle) hits on you. She's just playin'," she joked, writing down various numbers as they came to mind.
"And you approve of that?" It came as a bit of a surprised shock to Shannan to actually hear that. Not so much that Neely had forewarned her about the possibility that her wife might hit on her, but that the woman didn't seem to be bothered by that. "Sorry, I sound like I'm judging you and you're wife, and I'm not. Really." Shannan said with an apologetic smile.
"No, it's okay," Neely assured her with a smile. "I know that everyone has a different opinion on how relationships should work, y'know?" She quickly wrote down a few more numbers as they came to mind. "Rachelle and I... aren't really conventional. We're allowed to flirt with other people. And I'll be honest: Sometimes we do more than that." Wow, when did Neely discover tact? "But we're open and honest and it works for us. ...Annnnd you probably didn't need to know all that, huh?"
"That certainly makes you an unconventional couple." And certainly more knowledge then Shannan cared to know, tactfully though, she refrained from commenting back on that. Hey, if their marriage and unconventional ways worked for them then who was Shannan, or anyone else for that matter, to say differently.
"She's happy, I'm happy: That's all that matters," Neely replied agreeably before handing Shannan the piece of paper that she'd been working on. "That's everyone I can think of off the top of my head, anyway."
Shannan accepted the offered list and glanced it over. "Well, this certainly is some list." The blond doc said with a smile. And to think Shannan felt she had extensive family back in Boston. "And should you get the inclination to wanna get in touch with me." Shannan started saying as she tore a blank section of sheet Neely gave her off. The blond produced a pen then to write down her address, home and cell number. "I share a house with a fellow doctor, so if you call there you might not get me directly right off." Shannan explained offering the torn piece of paper to Neely.
Neely accepted the paper with a smile. "That shouldn't be a problem. I understand you doctor-types have hectic schedules, anyway, so whatever's more convenient for you, y'know? I trust my employees enough to leave the place for a few hours," she joked.
"We should talk in a couple days, maybe make plans for lunch or something." Shannan suggested. It would give them more time to chat and find out more about each other. While she couldn't leave the hospital as freely as Neely could leave the record store, Shannan could at least do lunch, even if it were in the hospital cafeteria.
"That sounds great," Neely replied. She briefly considered taking Shannan to the Sugar Shack, but thought better of it. She didn't want her cousin to go into a diabetic coma, after all! "I'll pick the place, since you're new in town and all." She winked.
"I accept." Shannan smiled. She was still familiarizing herself with the city and was thankful of Neely's offer to choose the place they'd meet up at.
