Watcher and Slayer Meet (Hopefully This One Sticks)
Who: Skylar and Hillary
When: Jan. 26th, Afternoon
Where: The Hyperion
After a call from Mr. Giles (which had been weird, to say the least), Skylar had agreed to meet yet ANOTHER new Watcher for herself, and she couldn't help but be a little apprehensive. While some may think that it had something to do with not wanting to infringe on her time, that actually wasn't it. She truthfully had no real problem with being a Slayer, although she had a career and children to prioritize it around, plus a husband. It was that her other two Watchers had come to grisly ends. One had her heart carved out by a batshit vampire (two, if you count altered memories, because, when Gwen had erased herself from everyone's memories, Narcissa had been SKYLAR'S Watcher), and one had been taken down because he was a menace to everyone because his werewolfness was out of control. So, as Skylar tapped her fingers lightly on a desk in one of the rooms of the Hyperion and waited for Hillary to arrive, she honestly wondered just how long this one would last.
Well, if her other watchers had been intense, possibly slightly crazy, types? Imagine her surprise here. When Hillary Cooper walked in, looking to all the world like the most sweet, normal, NERVOUS thing on the planet. Dressed nattily in a knee-length black business skirt, with black pumps, a dark gray sweater opened a bit at the top, and a gray suitjacket over that, the blonde gave her most calm smile and extended a hand. "Skylar Bale?"
Skylar gave her a smile, standing up and shaking the woman's hand. Since she wasn't pregnant (at the moment), she was actually up to being polite. "Yes, that would be me," she said to the woman. "I'm assuming that you're Hillary Cooper?" This woman couldn't be MUCH older than her. Damn. Other direction much?
Hillary wasn't AS shocked by the only slight age difference, as she'd been prepared. "That would be me. Sorry I'm a few minutes late... I sort of had a slight panic attack getting ready to leave and couldn't decide what to wear." Oh my GOD. Seriously?
Skylar bit back a chuckle. Well, this is at least going to be interesting. "It's fine. Don't worry about it," she said to Hillary. "I'm not sure if you were told beforehand, but I have a few more...obligations than some of the other girls here. I hope that's not going to be a real issue with you, is it?" At least one had thrown something of a...well, hissy fit honestly. (That would be Megan Baxter, actually.)
"Believe me... I'm well aware of your music career and your family. The part that's in your favor here is that while I may only be 34, I'm also a little more understanding that some young women might have more on their plate than just... hunt-kill-slay, you know? Just... be willing to accept that I know mroe than my age would suggest and we'll call it a deal."
"I'll definitely consider it a deal then," Skylar said with a smile. "I'm glad that you do understand that I have more on my plate, as you put it. Some of my ex-watchers...weren't as understanding." Which brings the next point up. "Did they tell you my luck with Watchers?"
"I have it all in your file. Rest assured I don't... really plan on dying anytime soon." She then burst into giggles, covering her mouth. "Oh good lord I really hope I don't die...."
"Frankly, I'd rather you didn't either. You actually seem nice." Then again, so had Quinn, and look where that went. "I don't know if its my luck or what, though. It kind of has me freaked out a bit."
"Well... I really can't say I blame you. But look. I promise you: there's nothing abnormal or 'different' about me, other than the fact that I'm from a long line of watchers." She smiled, sighing with a resigned laugh. "I'm far too boring to be much else than a simple teacher."
"Honestly, boring might be exactly what I need," Skylar admitted with a smile. "I think a teacher is exactly what I needed. My husband helps me train physically, but I admit that I barely know anything about...well, you know...types of demons, mythology, that sort of thing." The true 'book' side of being a Slayer. Yes, there was one!
Oh my GOD did Hillary's eyes light up then. You'd have thought she was a ten year old on Christmas morning. "I can TOTALLY help you there. I've spent most of my life studying every archaic text on Slayer history and on types of demons and how to defeat them and..." Yep. She caught herself getting a TAD too excited. Hmm... maybe this was why Giles paired these two up? Maybe he DOES know what he's doing, hm?
Skylar smiled. Apparently Giles DID realize what she needed in a Watcher now. She had the physical aspect of it covered. Maybe learning the other stuff would make her want to patrol more? She actually *HAD* been making rounds around Saints & Sinners and Avarice lately, after finding the werewolf hunters after Janna. She didn't want a repeat of that, after all. "I think this partnership is going to work perfectly, actually," she said after a moment.
"Fantastic!" Hillary said with real enthusiasm. And yes, she had to physically STOP herself from doing a little hop there. "Also, my only concern is that we build a real connection, and trust one another. So feel free to drop all formalities. Call me Hillary, dress however you feel most comfortable... the ONLY formality I ask for is respect."
"I think I can handle respect," Skylar said with a smirk. She would certainly like to respect this woman, and she hadn't come on strong and drill sergeant like, so that was a good start. "As long as I can get it back."
"I already respect you. It takes a strong woman to be a slayer... but an even STRONGER one to be a mother and wife. And I admit to listening to your album a few days ago and... REALLY liking it." She blushed, trying not to seem unprofessional.
"Well, then we're certainly on the right track to getting some mutual respect," Skylar admitted. It takes a lot to admit you respect someone younger than you, after all. Hillary had already garnered a little respect just by doing THAT.
