Finding a Slayer
Who: Faith, introducing Melaka Fray
Where: Random Park
When: Early Thursday – around 2am, February 17th
No one said that life as a Slayer was dull. Melaka Fray could attest to that. Or, she would if she wasn't so horribly occupied. After trying and failing to save her own world, she fell through a rift in time and landed face first in our world ("Oofh!"), battered, bruised and broken in some places, but still willing and able to fight as she staggered to her feet.
Good thing that she was, huh? Running by her was Faith Lehane. Well, actually, what ran by Melaka first was two vampires, with Faith hot on their tail. "Stop fuckin' runnin'!" Faith shouted as she continued to chase after them. She had already taken out two of their friends. It would be nice if they'd sit still and let her stake them already.
Clutching the scythe to her side, Melaka shook herself out of her daze and quickly joined the chase, working on pure instinct and ignoring the pain flaring in her ribs (It was possible that she'd broken a few, but like all Slayers, she'd heal soon enough). She took a quick detour, managing to get ahead of the Lurks—er, Vampires—essentially trapping them between her and Faith. "No more running."
Faith looked at the girl who was blocking the two vampires who had been running from her. "Thanks," Faith said, pouncing on one of the vampires and pinning him to the ground, jabbing her stake through his chest.
Melaka grinned at the other vampire (who looked just about paralyzed with fear, funnily enough) and launched herself off of the nearest wall, swinging the blade at the vampire and cutting his head clean off. Landing on the ground, she kept to a crouch, having hyperextended herself. "I think I'm gonna stay down here for a minute."
Faith arched an eyebrow as she watched Melaka launch herself at the other vampire. "Wow...nice moves," she said simply, looking down at her after she stayed on the ground for a moment. "Need a hand?"
"Nah, I'll be good," Melaka replied stubbornly, sucking in a breath before standing. Showing Faith that... clearly, she'd been having a bad day. It felt almost as if every inch of her was bruised or broken in some way. She looked the other girl over, surprised at how... adept she was when it came to killing the vampire. "...What's your name?"
Faith gave a nod. Faith was far less shocked at the girl's ability to kill a vampire. Then again, she was used to multiple Slayers running around in LA. Another one popping up and fighting a vamp with a cool looking weapon? Not shocking at all. "Faith," she said to the other girl. "What's yours?"
"Faith," Melaka repeated with a brief chuckle, holding one hand to her side. She'd probably laugh more if it didn't hurt so much. "That's funny." She looked around, realzing that things looked... different than before. "Melaka," she answered after a moment.
"Yeah, my mom had a great sense of humor there," Faith said with a slight smirk. She really had no idea why her mother named her that. She was fairly certain that the woman had been a Catholic ONCE in her life, though. "Never heard of 'Melaka' before," she admitted. "You from around here?" "For some reason, Faith's guess was 'no.'
"...Guess that depends where 'here' is," Melaka replied, still looking around. The air was fresh and crisp close to the ground, she'd never experienced that before. "And when," she added, as she watched a car drive by.
"Well, 'here' is Los Angeles," Faith said, wondering if this girl was concussed among other things. Then she asked the 'when.' "Damn...you too?" she asked simply. She had kind of thought that the last had been Bella McConnell jumping back through. (So she thought, hmm?) "Feb. 17th, 2001. When are you from then?" Faith was taking this rather well, wasn't she?
Melaka hadn't heard of a place calld 'Los Angeles', then again... she figured the names of places had changed over the centuries. She'd have to look at a map to know for sure where she was, frankly. She leaned back against a wall, still cluthing a hand to her ribs. "22... 43."
Faith arched an eyebrow when Melaka told her when she was from. "Damn...a lot further than the other people we got." She danced back and forth on her feet a little, already feeling the nervous energy in her from standing still for too long. "Look, from how you took out that vamp, I'm guessing you're a Slayer, right? So am I. Got a lot of us here. Can give you a place to crash if you need. So you can heal up and get five by five."
Usually Melaka had the same energy as Faith... but considering she'd just lost her world, the closest thing to a best friend... and failed to save roughly ten billion people? Forgive her for lacking some energy right now. "That... actually sounds real good right now," she replied, pushing herself off of the wall.
If Faith knew that, she'd DEFINITELY understand. "Need someone to lean on?" she offered. Of course, she could totally like, pick her up and carry her back to her and Giles's place. Actually, that would probably be quicker.
"Leaning's... probably a good idea," Melaka replied. "Might pass out soon. ...Bad day," she explained weakly. 'Bad day' didn't cover it, really... but she wasn't really one to share her feelings, especially with people she didn't know.
Faith nodded, letting her lean on her shoulder and putting her arm around the other girl's waist. "Everyone has those, so it's no problem," Faith said to her.
"Jesus, I could use a drink," Melaka joked, smiling sadly as they walked along. She could probably sleep for a while, if she had a mind to. "Ton's of Slayers, huh? ...Does that mean that the Watchers are sane?" Well, her Watcher had set himself on fire, after all. It was a valid question.
"Well, mine helps me out. I'm pretty sure Kayla's might drink himself to death now," Faith said, sort of musing out loud more than anything. "They aren't like...batshit crazy or anything, though."
"That's a step up from what I had," Melaka murmured. Urkonn wasn't an official Watcher. She'd considered him a friend, more than anything... she tried not to think about it. She slumped a little as they walked. "You and me, we'll go to a tav one day. I'll buy you a couple of beers." Melaka always found a way to get what she wanted. It was one of her endearing traits.
"You must have had something crazy," Faith said, not realizing at ALL what Melaka had to deal with. "And sounds like a plan to me, Mel," Faith said to her, catching her a little more as she slumped. Girl was definitely going to need some serious rest soon. The healing shit that Slayers had seemed to knock them out while it was doing its work, after all.
"Something crazy is definitely a way to put it..." Melaka smiled weakly, finally succumbing to exhaustion, she passed out where they stood, unable to move any further.
Faith managed to catch her gracefully. "Guess I'm doing this the rest of the way," Faith said to herself. She didn't mind, though. Not a bit.
Soon enough, she was home, kicking the door in (hey, her hands were full, OK?) and calling out, "Giles! I got you a present!"
