Gaining a Little Respect
Who: Buffy and Jodi
Where: Chloe's Sugar Shack
When: Feb. 8th, Afternoon
Buffy had come into the Sugar Shack tonight so that she could grab some coffee and sugar before heading out on patrol tonight. Some nights she was just not in the mood to patrol, and this was one of them. She had school work and other random stuff to do, but it was one of her nights to do it, and she wasn't going to blow it off. So, when she walked inside, she hopped in line.
Days like this? Made young Jodi Hanson look even more forward to her job at the Hyperion. Sure, pretty much ALL the slayers already loathed the sight of her, but at least she FELT important there. Here? Even at the Shack... she was still a dorky kid who got picked on ruthlessly. Today? It was, once again, the bane of her existence, Marty Haggerty. The football player who seemingly LIVED to pick on the girl. "HEY HANSON!" He yelled with a laugh, before throwing a cupcake at the back of the girl's head. She sighed, knowing what was coming, but did nothing, as hey: this was coming anyway. It generally did almost daily.
Before the cupcake could connect, Buffy's hand whipped out behind the girl's head, catching the cupcake and hurling it full force back in the other guy's direction, smacking him square in the face with it. "Next time pick on someone your own size, ass," she said. "Grow up already."
Jodi just blinked, watching Buffy's display with, well.. a bit of both surprise and admiration. When the boy rushed out in an embarrassed huff, Jodi walked over to Buffy and looked directly at the ground, muttering with a whisper: "...thank you... but... why did you help me? I kinda... thought you all hated me."
Buffy simply shrugged. "Because no one deserves having a cupcake smacked at the back of their head?" she suggested. "Look, just because you annoy some of the girls doesn't mean that you annoy ALL of us. Plus, not everyone condones Faith's act of smack."
"I... I kinda deserved that. Probably." She said with a cute little smile. "I guess... I don't go there to be liked. I gave up trying to be liked a long time ago. I want to be a watcher one day, and I wanna be a GREAT one."
"You can be a great Watcher and still not grate on everyone's nerves," Buffy pointed out. "No offense to her, but not everyone has to be Drill Sargent Delallo to get results." Ash wasn't anything like that with her, and, despite their violent tendencies, Faith, Candi, and Kayla had great Slayers, too. "There's a balance to be had. I think you're plenty likable when you're not...you know...RAWR I'm a Sargent, you know? Be yourself more, not the massive authority person. As you saw, not all of the girls respond to that." Even Buffy didn't.
"Oh... they respond to it..." Jodi sighed, rolling her eyes. "And I don't bark orders or anything... I just think rules are there to be followed. If I'm 'tattling', then it means you're doing something you shouldn't be doing to begin with." Sadly, it DID kind of make sense in a weird way...
"And people like Faith are going to plug their ears and scream 'lalala I can't hear you!' while pointing stuff out," Buffy countered. "What if you're eventually assigned someone like Faith or Candi? They're simply going to flip you the bird and run off. You can't get through to people all the same way."
Jodi just nodded there, grudgingly admitting that Buffy DID have a point. "I'm just... I'll try harder. I'm sorry." This was actually kind of sad. The girl was a total bully-magnet, and it was showing here. Poor thing was so used to being picked on that she was being ridiculously submissive even when the other person was being NICE.
"Don't worry. It's not really a 'try harder' type of approach," Buffy pointed out, then putting in an order for her coffee finally. "Think of it more as a different approach, like finding a better formula for a physics problem or something."
"If it matters... I'll probably go easier on you now anyway." Jodi blushed, letting out a little giggle. "I have a hard time being rough on people who are nice to me..."
Buffy chuckled. "Well, I'm not a complete and utter soldier like Catherine, but I still do my work, too, so hopefully you won't need to come down on me," she pointed out. Ash actually had made her a much better Slayer, believe it or not.
"So... think we can... um... be friends? Maybe? I mean, if hanging out with a 13 year old who technically gets to boss you around makes you feel like a scrub I totally understand..." Aww...
"I dated Ash for a little while, so I've already kind of been in that boat," Buffy said playfully. "Totally doesn't make me feel like a scrub."
"You dated ASH?" She couldn't help but squeak, eyes going wide. "And you live to tell the tale???"
Buffy laughed. "Lived quite well, actually," she pointed out. "His true love came back into town. Plus, I ended up with someone better for me, anyway, so it all ended well."
"He's.... he's SO SCARY!" She exclaimed, trying not to laugh. "Mr. Giles wanted me to tag along with him for a day, but he looked at me one time and those eyes just made me wanna pee my pants and run away."
Buffy giggled. "If you ever need to tag along with him, let me talk to him first and I'll make sure that he plays nice," she said. "He's just...not good with strange people sometimes."
Jodi nodded, and kind of went wide-eyed. "I... I think for now I'll stick with Ms. Delallo, Mr. Lewis, and Ms. Zamora. None of them OR their slayers make me fear for my life."
"Well, Hope Davenport is great even though her Slayer's a psycho. That has nothing to do with her. Candi was like that before Hope was assigned to her." Candi had been crazy forever.
"Yeah. That's why I stay away. Ms. Lehane commented that Ms. Harrington honestly may kill me." Jodi flailed a little there, not trying to look as, well, adorable as she did. "I don't wanna die! I just got my first girlfriend!"
"Well, then definitely stay away from her. I'm really not sure why Mr. Giles puts up with her, even though she's like, dating Faith or something." That HAD to be the only reason. Candi was too unstable to really let out to do stuff.
"And Ms. Barnes ALMOST tried to attack me, but Ms. Delallo yelled at her and she went away." Jodi blushed, kind of realizing... wow, she really MUST be a pain in the ass, huh?
"Well, yelling wouldn't have done jack with Faith or Candi," Buffy admitted. She liked Faith, but the girl was a loose canon at times. Plus, Candi scared the ever loving hell out of her.
"Ms. Lehane is... VERY pretty. Shame she's so annoyed by me." She said, as honestly, she DID want to be liked... she just couldn't help but be a pain.
"Well, she is. She's just wild is all," Buffy said with a shrug. Buffy really was one of the few straight girls in LA left, wasn't she, now that Sin and Catherine had even made out a little, huh? No matter. "Maybe she'll get used to you."
"Doubtful. At least I have my girlfriend and, well... my one school-friend that doesn't wanna hurt me." She snickered, poking fun at herself a little.
"Well, that's a start, but I bet you can make more friends eventually," Buffy said simply. "Hey, you made one today, after all."
"I hope so..." She replied, hoping that Buffy wasn't, well... just too NICE to tell her to screw off.
