Making a Friend
Who: Naomi and Sydney 'Project 27' Smyth
Where: Regan High School
When: Wednesday Afternoon, Jan. 26th
In her short life, the government experiment officially dubbed Project 27 had gone through a lot of hardships. Having experiments done to her. Going through training to be an emotionless assassin. Undergoing specialized training to learn to ignore pain. All of it bad, and nothing a child should have to endure. Yet she did, and she did it WELL. So when Draven Leroux busted her out, and placed her in the care of Dr. Roni Smyth... well... the suffering was over, yes?
NO. It was just STARTING. For a girl who'd grown up killing anything that she didn't like... High School? WAS HELL. She had taken on the name Sydney Smyth, and now, as a freshman at Reagan High.... well.... the girl wanted to MURDER SOMEONE. Which was why she stood by her locker, sweet little pigtails and plaid skirt hiding the killing machine within, glaring at a group of bullies she'd seen picking on young Jodi Hanson.
Naomi had also seen the group of people who had decided to pick on Jodi, a bunch of idiot football players who really had no business with messing with such a tiny girl, and decided that she was going to do something about it. She actually reached out and grabbed one of them by the arm and twisted it behind his back, pinning him against the locker. Considering that she basically looked like a goody two shoes? This was surprising for the both of them.
Normally? That display would have made the young girl smile. But today? Damn. She was hoping SHE would get to cause some damage. Which was why, when the sniveling form of Greg Moran attempted to sneak up behind Naomi to pull her away, the girl... oh my GOD... pulled a SWITCHBLADE out of her boot, and with lightning speed, stabbed him through the hand and impaled it to the locker. Giving him an all-too-sweet smile, she spoke in a voice that was so... innocent-little-girl that it was CREEPY given her nature. "Oops. I would go get that taken care of. You did... FALL ONTO YOUR OWN KNIFE after all..." She said it with such menace... it was clear that she meant 'tell anyone how this happened and I will destroy you'. Thank god nobody but the bullies had seen it, hm?
Naomi had to refrain from snickering when that happened. OK, maybe she was developing a slight problem with Ben as her godforsaken Watcher, OK? With a slight smile, she let go of the guy she was holding so that he could see what happened. "You'll think next time before picking on someone, won't you?" she asked them.
The sight of a barely 13 year old girl sneering like she wanted to tear someone's through out? JUST a tad creepy, thanks. "He's lucky..." she said to Naomi as if this sort of thing happened every day. "I could have easy stabbed him through the windpipe had I been so inclined."
She looked down at Sydney. "You would do that?" she asked. Was this girl another Slayer? Possibly one a little unbalanced, maybe? "I'm Naomi, by the way. Thanks for having my back."
"I'm... Sydney." She said, as though having to think of her own name for a moment. "And yes... I really don't like when people act like such...." she looked for the proper word, before remembering what she'd heard Draven say. "assholes."
"Nice to meet you, Sydney," Naomi said. "And that's a good term for them." She didn't swear all too much herself, but she definitely agreed with the sentiment. "You want to go and grab lunch?"
"I suppose so." She sighed, her voice hilarious sweet and innocent for how cold and calculated her words were. "The garbage they call food here isn't exactly choice sustenance, but it'll do in a pinch."
"This school is notorious for it's awful food," Naomi agreed. "I just forgot to pack my lunch this morning." Her parents were a little too busy to remember to do things like that for her.
Then it hit her where she knew Naomi from, aside from seeing her around school. She'd seen the girl's picture in the dossiers Roni had of all the slayers. Ok, so she wasn't REALLY supposed to see private files. Shut up. She wanted to learn all she could about the people she was going to likely have to co-exist with, ok? "You train at the Hyperion Hotel, do you not?"
Naomi looked over at her. "Yeah. Do you train there as well?" If she It would explain why she was killer accurate with that knife, after all.
"No... I'm not like... you and the other girls." Sydney said, raising an eyebrow. "I merely live with the woman who works as psychologist to you all."
"Oh, I see," Naomi said. "You're still awesome with a knife, though." She started to heard toward the cafeteria. At least they could get some food and eat outside. They didn't have to stay in there. "So, you live with Dr. Smyth then?"
"Yes. She agreed to take me in. Unfortunately... I have to be here as well." Clearly, she viewed school as her own private hell. "And I would appreciate it if you didn't tell anyone about my... display back there. If it got back to Dr. Smyth that I was stabbing people in school, she would likely get VERY grumpy." Gee, Syd... YA THINK???
"Frankly, I wish you had stabbed that guy in the throat," Naomi said cheerfully. "It's not like he's not probably going to be doing the same stuff to someone else tomorrow, after all." Sad but true. Those guys rarely learn to change their ways. "I won't say anything, though. No biggie."
"You're... far more twisted than I would have given you credit for." Sydney said with a GRIN.... "I actually think I may like you." Considering she pretty much hated everyone in school? That was high praise. "Not nearly as much as Draven or Dr. Smyth, but you're close."
Naomi did snicker a little at that. "I blame my Watcher. He's a BAD influence," she said with another giggle. "He's actually the same as they guy who owns the club Avarice." And the strip club, but Naomi didn't mention that. "A little on the amoral side." You think, Naomi? Just a little?
"Benjamin Bale." The young girl answered, as though she'd studied up on every slayer/watcher combo. "Lycan, 25, head of the Bale clan. Seeming weakness for anything female."
"Pretty much," Naomi said with a nod. When they got the cafeteria, she got in line for some food. "Was that in a file about him? The weakness for anything female?" God, that would be funny if it was true.
"It was. Apparently there is a dossier containing strengths and weaknesses for each of you and your teacher." Oh, and wouldn't Giles and Roni be thrilled to know the girl had hacked into them?
"I'm sure that mine say that I'm a flaming goober or something." Naomi wouldn't be shocked, to be honest. "God, I know pretty much all the girls would love to get their hands on those files."
"Naomi Bettingfield. 16. Amazingly intelligent, slightly naive, quick learner. Possibly a bit TOO loyal to her watcher." The girl blurted out, as if proving that no, the file did NOT say she was a goober.
Naomi chuckled. "Wow...better than I imagined," she said. She had half a mind to name all the girls, but decided not to for now. "Especially the last part is true." At least she admitted it.
"Why are you are so loyal to him?" She asked, inquisitively, being such a seeker of knowledge. "He doesn't sound very... decent."
"He's nice to those he cares about," she said with a nod. She was pretty sure he cared about her. He was nice to her, after all. "Plus, kinda have had a crush on him for like...ever."
"I.... can understand that." She sighed, having had SOME kind of feelings for Draven since the man had rescued her a year ago. "From the picture I saw, he is... a very handsome man."
Naomi nodded. "Yeah, he's definitely attractive." And so was his wife, but that delved into feelings that Naomi could barely wrap her head around, so anyways! "Can't always control who you're attracted to." Even if he is kind of a cad.
How funny was it that she was finally spilling this all not to one of her besties... but to a strange young girl she'd only just met? "My... friend, Draven... he's probably the most beautiful person I've ever seen. So kind, and generous... and just remarkably handsome."
Naomi grinned. "Sounds like a dreamboat," she said with a half smile on her face. "So, what's keeping you from going after him then?" She had to ask, if he was so wonderful, after all.
"He's 21. And unfortunately quite smitten with a girl he met in Las Vegas." Cutely enough, while Brenna Kellerman had been very nice to her... Sydney KIND OF wanted to cut her. Just for that reason.
"Not sure if either of those *should* stop you." Since when did NAOMI become a bad influence? Probably since she met Ben. "Still, boundaries are good to respect, you know?"
"You know... I'd heard that you were very shy and withdrawn. Perhaps the files aren't entirely accurate." She pondered, furrowing her brow cutely.
"Guess being a Slayer has made me come out of my shell a bit," Naomi said with a shrug. She had been acting a little different than she used to, but she had gone through a lot of stuff in the past year. How can you become a Slayer and not change, after all?
"My..." she tried to think of how to describe Roni, "guardian thinks I should try to make friends. I don't really know HOW to make friend." She pouted slightly, looking for all the world to be the most harmless little thing in the world. "Maybe I can call you a friend?"
And yet Naomi had seen that the girl was hardly harmless. And yet, Naomi found herself liking the girl. In high school, you had to appreciate someone being honest with you, after all. 'Sure, you can call me a friend," she said to Sydney.
"Well then, I suppose this day has amounted to something after all." Sydney mused, as the two walked away...
