Getting a Gift for Sister
Who: Bette, introducing Prue Gordon
Where: Shooting Star Comics
When: Saturday, January 29th
Prue didn't know much about comics, in all honesty - she was a book nerd, through and through. So why, you may ask, is she entering Shooting Star Comics on this fine afternoon? Why, for her sister, of course. The thin woman made her way inside, dressed in flared gray pants, a pink spaghetti strapped shirt with a black and white flower design on it as well as a black cardigan, beaded necklaces and a cute shoulder bag. Her long dark wavy hair was tied back in a loose ponytail and damn her, she didn't have an OUNCE of makeup on and still managed to look stunning.
Bette, as usual, was standing behind the counter, loudly chewing on a stick of gum, and looking boredly engrossed in an issue of The Punisher. She wore practically painted-on jeans, red sneakers, and a sliiiightly too-small Venom t-shirt.
Prue made her way over to the counter and arched an eyebrow atĀ Bette's outfit, but wisely decided not to say anything (since she knew that SHE could dress a little outlandishly at times) and instead smiled awkwardly and spoke in a soft yet smoky voice: "Excuse me. I was wondering if you'd be able to help me with something."
Bette raised an eyebrow then, looking away from the comic and smirking. "If I were a single gal, I'd help you with ANYTHING. Whaddaya need?"
That awkward smile of Prue's widened slightly then. "Well," she started to say, "it's my sister. She's a bit of a ... well, a nerd, I guess, and I thought that I'd get her something, but the trouble is, WHAT do I get her?"
"Well, aside from the vaguely offensive way you made that sound... I'm sure I can help ya find something. What kinda stuff does she like?" Bette asked, pushing aside the slight want to smack the girl.
"Well... it's not to say that I'm not a nerd as well, just... for different things," Prue explained, which was akin to digging a deeper hole for herself, really. "Um... anything with Star Wars, Lord of the Rings... and ... most of the superheroes." She frowned lightly. "Which doesn't help at all. I know that she shops here a lot. Maybe you know her, or have records of things that she might have ordered in?" It was a hope, anyway.
"What's the last name?" Bette asked, in that typical tone of hers in which you could never really tell if she was amused or irritated.
Prue just figured that she was irritated. She... had that effect on people sometimes. "Gordon," she supplied. "Sandy. She's... well, you'd know her if you saw her." She chuckled weakly.
"Let's see...." Bette started digging through the subscription folders, and then actually GASPED when she found Sandy's. "Holy crap, woman! Does your sister leave the house? I swear to god she must buy half our inventory! She even buys Excalibur. My girlfriend would step on my FACE to get to Kitty Pryde and SHE doesn't even buy Excalibur. Wow. Ok. Um... you looking for a little 'couple-dollar-surprise' or a big gift?"
"Now you see what I mean," Prue pointed out. It was hard to buy a gift for someone that practically bought everything in the shop. What if Prue got her something only to find out later that she already had it? "But I'm thinking a big gift. Something that... well, she KNOWS I went out of my way to get for her." She laughed. "And that she'll actually LIKE."
"Well, judging by the roughly 20 different comics of it she buys every month, I'm gonna guess she's hardcore into Star Wars..." Bette smirked, pointing toward the wall. "We got those replica things in last week... a Stormtrooper helmet, a Darth Vader lightsaber that lights up, and Han Solo blaster."
"Oooh," Prue mumured, actually going over to take a look. Despite the fact that she wasn't a big Star Wars fan, she could appreciate the beauty of the designs. "God, I think she'd just about have a fit if she saw any of these," she said with a smoky chuckle.
Bette gave a sigh and a knowing nod there. "Yeah, the bass player from Suicide Messiah came in the other day, saw the Boba Fett blaster we had, screamed 'MINE!' at the top of her lungs, bought it, and walked out muttering 'My precious' like she was Gollum or something."
Well, luckily Prue had read the Lord of the Rings books, hrm? That was the ONLY way that that joke would have made sense to her. She chuckled and shook her head. "I'm undecided which one she'd like more, honestly."
"I say go with the lightsaber. No matter who her favorites are... seriously, who the hell WOULDN'T want a lightsaber?" Hey, it was good logic to Bette!
Prue actually nodded to that, figuring, if anything, at least Sandy would have a little fun with it. "Alright. Sold. Ring it up."
After ringing up the box, Bette slid the huge thing over the counter to Prue. "Wanna tell your sister that the framed Catwoman/Batman poster she special ordered is in, too? I think Andrew forgot to call her."
Prue paid for it easily enough... since she expected the gift to be a LITTLE expensive, and nodded, tucking the box under her free arm: "Absolutely. Thanks for your help, by the way."
"Not a problem. Not like I had anything better to do, other than see who The Punisher was going to kill next." She smirked, picking the book back up and turning the CD player back on, bobbing her head a bit to Slipknot.
"Well, enjoy that," Prue replied, shaking her head with a small smirk as she realized that Bette and Sandy would likely get along well. She then turned and made for the exit, figuring that her younger sister would likely go spastic over her new toy.
