Nerds United
Who: Andrew and Nate
Where: Shooting Star Comics
When: Thursday Afternoon, November 25th
Nate figured that before his families traditional Thanksgiving "dinner" (it was usually a late lunch that they ate), he could make a quick trip to the comic book store, hoping beyond hope that they'd be open so that he'd find something to tide him over. Fortunately the store was still open, but barely. Apparently the owners wanted to close early. He quickly ducked inside, looking immediately to the guy near the counter (Andrew, he thought his name was), "I promise that I won't take long," he assured the other young man.
"Not doing anything until tonight," Andrew said simply to him. Him and Cassie were heading over to the Summers's home for Thanksgiving, but that wasn't until this evening. So, he had willingly taken a shift at Shooting Star Comics in case anyone decided that they just HAD to have something to read when they were trying to share time with their families. He was flipping through a Spiderman comic, and had barely even looked up when Nate ran in.
"Awesome," Nate grinned, making his way inside. He actually came from a large family, in all honesty, but more often than not he felt like an outsider. Then again, every teenager felt that way. "Anything good out?" He asked conversationally. Thank GOD Cassie or Bette weren't behind the counter. He would have stuttered like a fool if they were.
"Most people are putting off new releases until at least next week," Andrew said to him. "Trying to catch the Christmas crowd, I think." It was sad that even comic book makers were having to resort to such tactics for some profit, but capitalism could be the suck that way.
"Makes sense," Nate replied with a frustrated frown. Still, he wanted something new to read. Or, at least something that he hadn't read before, so he settled for browsing. Since it was quiet, he kept up with the idle chit-chat. "What issue is that?"
"Oh, sweet!" Oh dear. It looks like they found something to talk about, huh? "Doc Oc is one of my favorites. Only surpassed by The Joker. I know, I know. Different companies, but good characters."
"Hey, it's OK to like different companies," Andrew said with a slight smile. "And the Joker is awesome. Jack Nicholson kind of made him a little weird on screen, but he's still pretty awesome."
"Eh, he gets a pass for being Jack Nicholson, though," Nate shrugged. "What about the X-Men movie. What did you think of that?"
"Could have been better, but not too bad," Andrew said with a shrug. "Kind of wish they had included a few different mutants, but that's me." He wanted a Gambit.
"I would have liked a White Queen," Nate agreed. "But maybe in one of the next movies?" He added hopefully. God, wouldn't THAT be hot?
Andrew gave a slight grin with a blush and nodded. "I could definitely enjoy a movie with Emma Frost in it," he admitted.
Nate chuckled, blushing a tad as well. It wasn't often that he spoke of liking women, let alone fictional ones. "I totally think Naomi Watts would be an AWESOME Emma. She played 'Jet Girl' in the Tank Girl movie," he explained, just in case Andrew didn't know who she was. Since she wasn't THAT well known. Yet.
He thought back to that movie and nodded. "Yeah, I can easily see her working for that then," he said to Nate. He remembered Naomi Watts, anyway, and for THIS conversation, that's what counted.
Nate laughed. "Thank you. You have no idea how many fanboys I've argued with on the internet over this." Hello, Nate? There's a reason why you don't have a girlfriend. Get with it, man! "ANYWAY. I'll stop being obsessive at you."
"No problem," Andrew said with a slight smile. "And don't worry about it. You've been a lot nicer than some people have been when they've come in here arguing about something they're passionate about."
"True. Good arguments aside, people are still entitled to their own opinions." Nate replied with a nod. "Speaking of which, don't hold it against me if I buy a Birds of Prey comic. They're a bit of a weakness of mine."
Andrew chuckled and shook his head. "I promise to hold no one's taste against them," he said. "If nothing else, I can always go with the argument 'it makes this place money.'"
"Very true. Every time I buy something from Bette," or, every time he got the COURAGE to buy something from Bette, "she makes me feel about three feet tall."
Andrew snorted. "That's just the way that Bette is programmed to be." If only Nate knew just how technically correct that statement was. "It's not a personal thing with her...well...not much, anyway." Andrew grinned with the last part.
Nate chuckled as he started looking through some X-Men comics. Hopefully there'd be something there that he hadn't read. "Cassie's always nice to me, though. She keeps trying to get me to join a D&D group, despite the fact that I told her that I have *no* idea how to play."
"We can teach you D&D stuff if you want to join," Andrew offered. "It's really not all that hard to learn at all." Plus, Andrew just loved running games with people.
"As long as you take it easy on me," Nate replied with a chuckle. Sure, he'd likely pick it up easily, but that wasn't to say others wouldn't make fun of the n00b.
"I'll make sure that we're at least decent to you," Andrew said with a smirk. Of course, he wouldn't want to completely drive the guy away, so he'd at least play somewhat nice, even if he was known to be somewhat of an evil DM.
Nate chuckled, figuring that was about as good as he was going to get. "Alright. I'm in. Just tell me when and I'll be sure to show up."
Andrew grabbed a flier that was made to let people know when the comic shop held its D&D nights. "Just be here about half an hour or so early so we can help you out making a character and stuff," he said.
"Awesome." Nate looked at the flier, already committing dates and times to memory. He didn't... really have much of a social life, so beyond school work, he figured he could handle it. "Thanks."
"No problem," Andrew said with a smile. "Hope to see you there."
