Ah, Finally. A Woman Immune to Benjamin Bale's Charms
Who: Ben introducing Kate Darling
Where: Avarice
When: Monday, October 4th
Kate Darling had been working at Avarice on-and-off ever since Patience McConnell… was fired. She was a slender Texan woman with long blonde hair and full pouty lips, she was also gay and a single mom (poor dear didn't realize how GAY she was until she was already pregnant. Oops?), who set aside her own dreams to raise her child.
Luckily she came from a large family, and... also lived with her parents (which was a bit embarrassing for a 26-year-old, she was the first to admit), so why did she work as a bartender? Well, for one: she was good at it. Two: She could be home in the morning and afternoon for her son, and three: it paid pretty good. Especially the gig at Avarice. Which was why, it should come as no surprise that she was standing in Benjamin Bale's office, dressed in jeans, a pale pink dress shirt and a grey jacket, asking about full-time work. Sure, Ben could come across as a bit of a skeeze, but he was WAY better than some of the bosses she'd had.
"So. Kate." Ben sat at his desk, looking over a few papers that were, seemingly, some sort of evaluation. "You're looking to step up from part-time work to become a full-time bartender here at Avarice?" He asked, astonishingly enough not even hitting on her. Maybe he felt bad for her situation. or maybe he just didn't have time to hit on her yet. Yeah. Probably that one.
"That's it in a nutshell," she replied. She didn't understand why people felt bad for her, however. She was happy and healthy, as was her son, and if she had that, that's all that mattered to her. "I understand if you've got a full plate here, but I figured there was no harm in askin'."
"No, actually. We need a full-timer. My brother moved to Las Vegas with his wife, and she was one of the full-timers here. So... as much as I'll miss Nevada and her sparkling personality... we need to replace her." He smirked, looking at the paperwork again. "According to CJ and Kayla, you've done a fine job so far, and seem like a natural. You want this to be full time? You got it. Probationary status for three weeks. You start tomorrow night, 6pm until close."
Holy shitballs, Batman! was Kate's inner dialogue. Fortunately, she had some ability to NOT say what she was thinking most of the time. She couldn't help it but give him a big grin. "Just like that?"
"Just like that." Ben said. So sue him, he liked her. "But. Mess up in those three weeks and the ball's over, Cinderella."
She rolled her eyes and smirked then. "I was never one for glass slippers, anyway. Me’n my combat boots won't let you down, though, boss."
"Also... I have a request for you. My cousin's 21st birthday is this week. And she's... good friends with both Kayla AND CJ. Which means I need you and Mia to tend that night." Ben said, watching her reaction to such a sudden request.
Kate shrugged and nodded. "I'm keen. I have a... support system set up for my son, so I know he'll be taken care of." Sad, but true. She'd actually worked it out at a young age.
"Fantastic. I promise you that will put you WELL into all of our good graces." Which, face it, was a very important thing in a family-run business. "Replacing Nevada won't be easy... but with hard work and a good personality... you'll do it."
"I'll be honest with you: I don't half-ass anything. If you want something done right, you do it right the first time. As for personality stuff... well, I guess I'll let you see how I mold with everyone from there," she smiled.
"If your conversational skills can match up with your looks... I have no worries." He said with a wink. Ok, so maybe he WAS gonna flirt with her. Come on. IT WAS BEN, FOR FUCK'S SAKE.
"Oh, sweetheart. I think I'd only attract a certain kind of person. Don't you?" She couldn't help it but be a little playful there - hey, he started it!
"Well. We'll find out. And if this bartending thing doesn't work out... well..." he grinned, "I have another club I would LOVE for you to work at..."
"Oh, I dunno if my little Texan heart could take that..." she chuckled.
"You sure about that?" He teased, giving her a lonnnng once-over. "You've... certainly got the body for it..."
"If you weren't my boss, I'd totally slap you upside the head right now," she replied with a laugh. She'd heard stories about him, though, so she wasn't as fazed by him as most women tended to be. That and his charm didn't work on her.
"Hey... wouldnt be me if I didn't try, right?" He laughed, waving her towards the door. "Welcome to the Avarice staff. I think you'll fit in JUST fine."
"Thanks, Ben. I promise I won't disappoint," she replied, knowing a dismissal when she heard it. Still, she couldn't help but throw a teasing wink and smirk over her shoulder as she left.
