Coming to certain realizations
Who: Mai and Liz
Where: LAGH
When: Sunday, Late Afternoon - September 19
Mai, with a couple bruises and stitched up laceration on her face, lay motionless on the bed hooked up to a monitor that kept track of her vitals. The Watcher had been wheeled up and into a room after surgery to repair a tear in her spleen that was causing internal bleeding. Her injuries were a result of an auto accident she had become involved with during a second tremor that rocked the whole city. Having been filled with concern and worry about a certain blond doctor after experiencing the effects of the first earthquake of the day, Mai left her place that morning to drive to the hospital. A decision that led to traumatic consequences.
When Liz had been looking at the list of recent admission names, as she was ready to go on her lunch... she saw Mai's name on it, and literally dropped her sandwich on the floor, booking it with full speed to where the woman was being attended to, laying unconscious in the ICU. The other doctors tried to calm Liz, telling her Mai was only in ICU until she regained consciousness, as precautionary measures... but Liz was freaking OUT. Mai was about the one really GOOD friend she had now, the one person who managed to get her mind not only off of Wesley, but Selinda as well. She knelt by her friend, closing her eyes and holding the other woman's hand, tears forming in her eyes.
"Damn it, Mai... what are you tryin' to do to me, huh? I keep losing everyone I care about... I can't keep doing this..."
Mai's eyes opened slowly as the familiar voice filtered through to her unconscious state to slowly bring the Asian looking woman back to a state of semi awareness. "Liz?" Mai whispered out with a slight, dry hoarseness to her voice, and a slow run of her tongue over dry lips as her fingers curled lightly around the blonde's as Liz held her hand within her own.
"Mai... oh thank god... you're alright..." She kept holding her friend's hand, brushing the woman's hair back gently with her other hand. "I saw your name on the admissions list... I ran right down. How... how do you feel?" Oh, brilliant question, honey. Really.
"I've felt... better." Mai swallowed and then licked at her lips again before giving Liz a faint smile. "I... I was coming to see...you." She whispered with a very slow lift of her free hand to caress fingers lightly along the blonde's cheek.
"Well, clearly your desperate ploy to get my attention has worked, because I'm here." She gave a weak laugh, trying to lighten the mood, more or less so that she wouldn't start crying. "You know, next time you want to see me, you could just ASK..."
"Had to see for myself that you were alright." Mai said giving a weak smile. A simple phone call wouldn't have accomplished that as Mai hadn't trusted Liz to be honest with her being as dedicated as she was to her profession. She knew that with Liz patients came first, and Mai was sure there would have been plenty in the ER after the first quake.
"Mai..." Liz sighed and squeezed the other woman's hand once, brow furrowing. "Why would you worry so much about me? You could have been KILLED, you goof..." Ok, was Liz becoming vaguely aware of what was going on in the other woman's head? Just a bit. But she was still struggling with admitting it to herself.
"I didn't think another," Mai took a small breath, then, "quake would hit so soon." Mai then raised her hand again slowly to Liz's cheek. "Because I care for you Elizabeth Todd." And again that weak smile touched her lips as Mai caught and held the blonde's eyes for a moment. She wasn't sure Liz would catch the true meaning of her words, but Mai would at least try to get the other woman to try and understand the depth of the feelings she had for the blond doctor.
"You know the feeling's mutual, honey, right?" Liz sighed, just sitting there beside her friend, turning to nod to the attending nurse that she'd take it from here. "If anything happened to you I'd be such a mess... you're about the only person these days who brings a smile to my face."
"I want to continue to do that." Mai told her biting back the slight pain and discomfort as she tried to slowly ease herself up to a semi sitting position. "Be the one responsible for those smiles of yours." Mai smiled weakly.
"Whoa... no no no. No sitting up. Not yet." Liz gently blocked her from moving, shaking her head. "You wanna keep being my official smile-giver, you gotta take care of yourself, ok?" Yeah... it was pretty much apparent to Liz now. Even *she* couldn't repress that knowledge anymore. But now was the hard part: how did she handle this knowledge now? She, surprisingly, wasn't terribly bothered by it... nor was she totally convinced SHE didn't feel something. But she wasn't sure if she was ready to admit anything like that to herself.
Finding herself in such close proximity to the other woman, Mai found she couldn't help herself. Before she her actions registered with her mind the brunette had slipped a hand within the doctor's lush blond mane to draw Liz slowly into a soft, momentary kiss. A very light smile settled upon her lips when Mai slowly, and cautiously, back down onto the hospital bed. Maybe this wasn't exactly the most proper of places, or the right time for that matter, to have kissed Liz, but Mai wasn't about to make any apologies for her actions. She just hoped that it wouldn't have the doctor now deciding to keep her distance.
"Don't want to go.... against doctors orders." Mai licked at her lips once more to moisten them as she looked up to the blond physician.
Wow. Well then. Liz blinked, and found herself briefly kissing back. She blushed profusely, and decided to put herself in neutral ground. She didn't want to pull away because not only did she not want to offend Mai... she wasn't entirely convinced she didn't WANT it. But she wasn't brave enough to pursue it right now either... so she did the safe thing: she changed the subject with a soft, loving smile. "Exactly. Obey doctor's orders. I don't wanna go losing my best friend to some silly thing like stubbornness."
"It'll take more then that to lose me, Doc." Mai smiled back glad to note that the kiss didn't seem to offend or bother the other woman all that much. And if she wasn't mistaken, though Mai could have been wrong, there was a momentary reciprocation of the kiss given. To the Watcher it was a good sign. The possibility of furthering their relationship beyond the boundaries of friendship appeared to still be there.
"Good." Liz said simply, brushing her friend's hair back and sighing. "Now... get some rest, ok? I, sadly, have a LOT of people to check on. And I might have possibly trashed my lunch in my desperate rush to find you when I heard you were hurt. So... considering I've been here for 14 hours already, I should PROBABLY go eat something. But relax, and I promise when I'm caught up, I'll be back."
"Not like I'll be able to do anything else." It would most likely be that Mai would fall asleep after Liz left. It was only because of the blonde's presence that Mai had kept herself awake, and with her gone and the room silent once more there'd be nothing to keep the Watcher's attention. Something that would result in her drifting off into a soft slumber.
"I'll be back..." Liz repeated as she stood, looking at her friend with a soft grin. "I promise."
