Who: August Ridley OT: Anyone
Where: The Brig (bar)
When: Evening, Tuesday, September 28th

The Brig wasn't far from where he lived in Marina Del Rey, the closest marina to Los Angeles where his houseboat was located. He was still waiting on the glass he'd ordered after the disaster of both fire and earthquakes that did damage to the marina and his home. There was still plenty of mess for him to clean up, which was why he was in the bar before stopping by the boat for a few hours to continue making the place habitable again.

August was grateful that Jamie offered his old apartment to him for the duration of the detective's repairs, but he missed the sound of the ocean, the usual noises of the marina, and the subtle sway of the boat. He spent the last few nights wandering around the apartment and coupled with the fact that he'd just finished dealing with the funeral of his parents and a strange freak accident at Charlotte Valentine's apartment building...the detective needed a drink.

He sat at one of the tables in the bar, the Sam Adams he'd ordered untouched. Auggie stared intently at it in thought, his arms crossed and his chin resting on his forearms. The coroner's report had come back and apparently Ms. Valentine was right; Ronald Archer fell from the top of the building. All the physical evidence, despite the unusal comment about the man's heart, pointed in that direction.

"Deep thoughts?" Sophia asked with an arched eyebrow as she sat down beside August. She'd just gotten off of a shift, and, while she knew that she had to work again tomorrow, couldn't stop herself from coming out to get a drink tonight. Or several. She'd seen far too many strange, and frankly, disturbing things the last few days. She was wired with energy, but also desperate to forget about her own problems – despite that fact that she wanted to see Mercy again, but that was a whole other story.

She ordered her traditional beer and chaser and gave August a once over. "You look like shit run over twice," she commented. Lovely. She, herself, had just had a shower and changed into her traditional jeans and black tank-top combo, her hair still slightly wet. She was the kind of woman that looked good no matter what she wore, and let's face it. She was never going to wear a dress.

Sophia's first words snapped August out of his reverie and he blinked at her, shifting his gaze in her direction. He then sat up, his index, middle finger, and thumb curving around the neck of the bottle and lifting so he could take a swig just after replying, "Maybe." He replied in that quiet, calm way of his. While the woman ordered herself a drink, his eyes shifted to the TV until her next comment come from her smart mouth. A smirk curved his lips slightly and Auggie retorted, "Gee, thanks," just before taking another swig of his Sam Adams.

"I just call it like I see it," Sophia replied with a husky chuckle. She downed her shot in one go and slammed the glass back down on the bar with a satisfied 'ahh'. Clearly, she liked to drink. "Now is this the part where I prod and prod until you tell me what's bugging you – and believe me, I can be persistent – ? Or are we going to just ignore the fact that you're pouting and watch the game?"

A chuckle came from him and his eyebrows shifted a little on his face to match his words, "Ouch. Pouting isn't good for a man." He studied his bottle while he turned it a quarter of an inch in a circle absently on the counter. Auggie sighed and gave Sophia a strained smile, "I've been dealing with a lot of crap the last couple of weeks. Rain of fire, the earthquakes, my parents passing...a strange case."

"Shit. I'm sorry to hear about your parents. It's never easy losing someone you love... I know that sounds like a textbook thing to say, but it's true." Hell, the whole reason she'd moved to LA from NY was because she'd lost someone. Although a child still in the womb was vastly different from parents who had raised you. Apart from the grief counselor, she'd never discussed her miscarriage with anyone, and wouldn't bring it up now. "And I guess 'when it rains, it pours' isn't quite the phrase I'd use here. More along the lines of 'when it rains, hell shits on you and everything you love'. Sorry. I'm in a bitch of a mood."

"What's the case, anyway? From one cop to another." Sure, they'd never spoken before but she'd be blind not to notice that air about him.

The detective lifted his shoulders in a shrugged, "Apologizing for something that isn't your fault makes you look weak." He took another swig of beer before adding his usual words regarding death, "Death is a part of life. Whether it's before someone's time or not." Auggie sighed, "My sister isn't dealing with it too well, however." The werepanther dropped his chin into his hand, "I think she's not dealing well with it because she had two kids who lost their grandparents." He glanced to Sophia, "April was closer to our parents than I was," Auggie explained, "While I always made it to Sunday dinner, my sister was always with them several times a week."

As for August's strange case...he shrugged, "Officially, it's been labeled a freak accident and closed. But," He paused to fidget with the beer bottle, "My gut says otherwise. Technically, I can't keep the case open. All the evidence on the vic points to the guy falling from a great height, despite the notation from the coroner saying that if the guy hadn't fallen he would've died from a heart attack soon." Auggie stopped and thought a moment while taking another swig of Sam Adams, "Coroner said it was almost like the guy was being scared and chased to death. But, there's no other physical evidence to support that. No abrasions on Archer's feet to indicate he'd been running, no defensive wounds. Just...a lot of broken bones consistent with a fall."

The first part of what he had to say actually upset her, although anger was always going to be her first response, rather than tears. "It's called being sympathetic, you ass. Look it up."

She took a swig of her beer and stewed for a minute, but damn if his case didn't pique her curiosity. "Sounds like something out of The X Files. Should I call you Mulder, or Scully?" She looked him over, "Screw it. You're Scully." Clearly, she was still upset. "If you think foul play is involved, you'll have to pursue it in your own time. Otherwise, just let it go. It's not worth obsessing over."

Her retort coupled with the change in her body language made Auggie realize he'd said something upsetting. The detective fully expected his words to be thrown back at him when he apologized, "I've upset you." He looked at Sophia, "I'm sorry. I tend to get a little mouthy when I'm grouchy." Auggie then added, "Let me make it up to you. Next round is on me."

A smile spread across his face at the Scully comment and he looked away while finishing off his beer, "I deserved that."

"You know what? I'll take that drink. But it's fine. I haven't exactly had the best month, either." Sophia pondered on that for a moment, before sipping her beer. "I'm not gonna make any apologies for how I reacted, though. I'm not exactly wired that way. Suffice to say that I get mouthy when I'm grouchy, too. So don't piss me off."

Auggie ordered another Sam Adams while she'd been silently pondering...whatever. A smile curved his lips at her comment about being grouchy as well and not to piss her off. In reply, the detective chuckled, "Duly noted." He clinked his fresh bottle of beer against hers and took a sip.
