Asking Questions
Who: Frank and Carly
Where: Chloe's Sugar Shack
When: Tuesday Afternoon, Aug. 31st
Frank sat down at the Sugar Shack while he waited for Carly to show up. He had just gotten off of work, but didn't feel completely OK with talking about this in the LAGH cafeteria. He wasn't sure who else to ask about this, though, so he asked Carly to meet him here. If anyone would have an idea as to what was going on with the girl staying at his home, then Carly would, though. He sipped at the drink that he had ordered and waited for his colleague to arrive.
After finishing a 20-hour shift, you'd think Carly would be falling over tired, right? Oh, how we underestimate our young doctor. Those big, doe-like eyes wide and adorable, she walked into the Shack still in her work clothes, looking bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. "Hi, Frank..." She said in that chipper tone of hers, sitting down across from him. "So... what's on your mind?"
"You are far too energetic to have just gotten off the shift I know you did," Frank said playfully to her as she sat down. It was true, after all. "I need to talk to you about a teenager that I found on the beach the other day. For some reason, I kind of get the feeling that she's not human."
"Like anyone we deal with IS anymore, hm?" She asked, grinning cutely. "Ok, ok... tell me what we're dealing with here, sweetie."
"Hmm...good point," he said with a slight shrug. "Well, I found her nude on the beach, and she doesn't seem to speak English at all, although she's learning it quickly. She also communicated with me that her family came from the sea." He just wasn't sure what to make of all of it.
"You found a naked girl on the beach? Lucky." Oh, she couldn't help herself there. Come on. Even the normally awkward Carly could make jokes SOMETIMES. ""From the sea... like fish-people or something? Does she have fins or any sort of visible gills?" Sadly? This was the ONLY time Carly was comfortable and talked normally. When discussing work-related things.
He actually chuckled. "A little young for me," he said quickly. "She doesn't have anything that shows any sort of obvious fish type appearance, but I was thinking along the lines of maybe a shape shifter of some sort."
"Sh... you mean like a mermaid or something?" Oh man. She actually got a little giddy there. "Like in Splash? Because I looooved that movie! It was so cute and romantic and Daryll Hannah was soooo adorable..." she blushed, catching herself getting all gooberiffic. "And I'm getting completely off-topic."
He laughed a little. "I actually hadn't thought of that, but maybe," he said to Carly. "I didn't realize that mermaids even existed, but I guess that literally everything does, doesn't it?" He was still learning a lot.
She nodded, sighing. "At this point? Never discount the existence of anything. I've never dealt with a real mermaid before. This is kind of exciting..." She grinned, jotting down a few notes. Best part? Try talking to her about simple mundane things? And she'd fall apart and stammer and mumble like an idiot.
"It is kind of exciting," he agreed. "I'm not sure exactly how to take care of her, though. She tried to eat mustard and a tomato together, and got a little frustrated when I took a beer away from her."
Ok, now THAT visual, combined with being so tired, actually made Carly giggle. And snort in mid-giggle. Several times. "Ok, ok... sorry... talk to her, explain who I am, and see if she'd be willing to let me check her out. Make sure she's safe, and able to remain healthy on land."
He nodded. "I hope that it won't be a problem. I have no idea if she's able to stay out of the water for long periods of time or not." He wasn't sure if she knew, for that matter. "I'll try my best to explain who you are and that you aren't there to hurt her."
Carly nodded solemnly. "If she's alright with it, I'm willing to come to her, to help with her comfort. All I want to do is make sure she's healthy. I promise."
He nodded. "I know that you only want to help her. I'm not sure if she'd understand the concept of 'doctor' though is my only worry." She may have never heard of the concept, actually.
"Well... like I said. See what you can do. I'm certainly not going to want to upset or worry her. If worst comes to worst, maybe I can teach you to do a few of the tests I was going to do, and YOU could administer them."
He nodded. "Hopefully it won't come to that, though. Hopefully she'll trust the both of us and let you do the tests." That was Frank's hope, anyway.
