Time to Stop Pretending
Who: Gabriel and Kayla
Where: Gabriel's Apartment
When: Aug. 31st, Evening
Gabriel was tired of blushing and looking away every time Kayla looked at him a certain way. No matter what happened, whether she returned his feelings or not (he truly had no clue), tonight he was determined to say once and for all how he felt, even if that meant him stuttering and stumbling and accidentally comparing them to vultures who mate for life. He had done all in the past with different women, actually. One had *especially* hated the vulture comparing. Still, as soon as she came out for the morning, he was going to tell her, or at least start to tell her.
Kayla had slept remarkably well in the guest bedroom, despite the fact that she usually had trouble sleeping in a bed that she didn’t consider her own. She woke up at a decent 7am and walked out into the living room, clad in pj bottoms and a black tank-top, her freshly dyed blonde hair a little disheveled and while not normally a morning person, she smiled when she saw him. "G'mornin'."
He smiled back at her when she came into the room. "Good morning," he said to her. "Are you hungry? Or would you like some coffee?" He was feeling nervous, despite his smile.
For now, Kayla was completely oblivious to that. Probably since it was still so early in the morning. "Coffee would be great," she replied.
He got up and walked into the kitchen, coming out a few moments later with two cups of coffee, handing one to her. "The creamer and sugar are already on the table," he told her.
"Thank you." She gingerly took the cup, adding two sugars and cream before taking a sip. "Are you always up this early?"
He nodded. "I actually don't need too much sleep," he admitted. He was just one of those lucky people that way. He functioned well on about four hours of sleep a night. He bit his lip and looked at his hands for a second. "There's something....something that I want to talk to you about."
She frowned lightly at his tone, but nodded and found herself a seat, willing to hear him out. Whatever it was, it was obviously important for him to be so nervous, right?
"What I want to tell you, well, I probably shouldn't, because there are things like propriety and such..." And the fact that he had been threatened with all but castration by the old guard of the Council in his school days, and, although they were gone, the warnings stuck a little, even if he knew of a Watcher who had married his Slayer. "I can't help how I feel, though..." He nervously ran his fingers through his hair.
"Gabriel…" Kayla murmured, a light frown creasing her features. She set her drink aside and stood again, trying to get him to look her in the eyes.
Maybe he just didn't know how to put it properly. Maybe he wanted to make sure he didn't mention the mating rituals of vultures this time. Whatever the reason, he jumped the gun and, instead of trying to explain his feeling for her, lust leaned forward and kissed her instead.
She was a little stunned initially, since she never expected him to… well, to do that. Still, that didn’t stop her from kissing him back after a few seconds, keeping it innocent as she placed a hand to his cheek.
At least she didn't jerk away and slap him like he somewhat expected, given his own record with, well, everyone but Kayla, honestly. Finally, he pulled away himself. "Sorry," he said. "I didn't know how else to put it."
"That's... a pretty good way to put it," she breathed, placing a hand to his chest to steady herself here. "How long have you... felt that way?"
"A...a while," he admitted. He wasn't exactly sure how long, but it came powerfully to the forefront of his mind after her attack. He just didn't want to bring it up for fear of...well, lots of things.
"Huh." She placed a tender kiss to his cheek. Maybe that's why she felt so awkward around him, because there was something there that neither of them were willing to talk about. Or, thought able to talk about. "So... What do we do now?"
He shrugged. "That...kind of depends on you, I guess," he admitted. "If you don't...feel the same way I do...we'll never speak of this again." And he might set something on fire, but whatever. "If you do...well..." He hadn't thought that far ahead, mainly because he didn't expect her to, honestly.
"I think... that there's something there." She nibbled her lip thoughtfully, trying to find a way to word what she wanted to say. "I'm not sure what it'll turn into, if anything. But I'd like to at least try."
He blinked, not sure if he had understood her properly at first. "You...you want to try?" he asked. Oh GOD was he relieved. He actually leaned forward and kissed her again out of said relief.
She chuckled and wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing up against him to kiss him proper.
