Welcome to the Club
Who: Mere and Stephanie
Where: Avarice
When: Aug. 24th, Evening
So maybe she'd just been truly INSPIRED again, she wasn't sure. But for the first time since walking away from The Lazarus Project, young Stephanie Whitmore was onstage, at Avarice this time, during what was basically an open-mic night, playing a bouncy, upbeat tune she'd written a few months back. She wore a skintight Misfits tee-shirt, a studded choker, and a black denim miniskirt with calf-high Docs.
"I wish you well, hope you understand
If I could only tell
The choice you have to make
A beggar or the throne
But please don't touch the flame that burns inside
It will keep you safe and alive
This empty memory lane
Is filled with the touch of a flame
Who am I
Ever to judge you
Repeat the fears
Can you feel it feel it on your skin
But please don't touch the flame that burns inside
It will keep you safe and alive
This empty memory lane
Is filled with the touch of a flame
Open up your soul and let love in
But please don't touch the flame"
Mere was actually watching from backstage at the moment. She had been planning on debuting a song that she had written during this open mic night herself, but, as she watched Stephanie completely pull in the crowd, she found that she might have found a replacement guitarist for Gideon as well. If she had, then she would consider herself very lucky. Hopefully, Stephanie would be up for that as well.
Stephanie, being the little goober she was, gave an 'awshucks' grin to the audience and shuffled her feet. "It'll... it'll sound better with bass. And drums. And maybe a second guitar. And I'll shut up now." And then she skittered offstage, an adorable little bounce to her step.
Mere cracked up at Stephanie's little 'going away' speech and, as she came off stage, stopped the girl. "Hey, you were great up there, by the way."
"Thanks! Meredith, right?" She wasn't trying to be rude... but face it. They'd only met a couple of times, briefly. "From Suicide Messiah. Thanks... I've just been practicing a lot with Lexi lately, and it kinda... gave me the bug again."
Mere nodded. "Hanging and practicing with Lexi will do that," she said with a grin. Of course, she knew that Steph and Lexi weren't *just* practicing on their guitar licks, but she decided to be nice, for now, anyway. "Got the bug enough to want to join a band again?"
Poor Steph. She was still too insecure to catch on to what Mere was offering. "Well, I'm sure you know why I left Lazarus. I just... couldn't look Ginny in the eye. She tried to get me to stay but... I just couldn't. I've been thinking about doing a Misfits cover band... just something for fun..."
"Nah, I don't blame you for deciding to leave Lazarus," Mere said to her. "Then again, I can think of a better band that you'd be good for." She sighed. "In case you haven't heard...Gideon had to move with his family, so...we're kind of out a guitarist again."
"Wait.. are you..." She didn't want to just assume here, ok?!? "I mean... you guys are about to hit the spotlight. Your album's due out in like... a week or two! I don't deserve to just get to walk right into that!"
Mere chuckled. "We don't exactly have much of a choice, do we?" she asked Stephanie. "Besides, you're more than good enough to replace him, and it's not like it would be *too* taxing on your abilities."
"Well, it's not the most awe-inspiring offer I've ever received..." She laughed, rolling her eyes "We don't have a choice is right up there with 'the other guy died' in terms of bad reasons to be asked to join a band..."
Mere cackled. "Just because we need a new band member doesn't mean that I'm not dying to have you in our band, Steph," she told the other girl. "I was kicking myself for not snagging you as soon as the Lazarus Project signed you up."
"...really?" Steph asked, those doe-like eyes widening. "I mean, I'd be honored, Meredith. You girls are SO amazing, and I'd be sorta paying tribute to Lexi, too, in a way." Think she had it bad for her mentor? Duh.
Mere nodded. "That's definitely true there," she said about paying tribute to Lexi. "Plus, Skylar's litter producing ass has given birth again, so we can actually start practicing again and be up for our new release."
"You... you talked to the other girls about this? And they all actually want me in the band?" Her voice gave a cute little squeal there.
Mere nodded. "I wouldn't jump the gun and assume for all of them." She laughed. "I freely admit to also enjoying snagging Lazarus Project's old and better guitarist, but I'm a spiteful bitch and a half, plus, you are fucking fantastic at what you do."
"You mean..." Yeah, so she actually gawked a little there. "Chloe, Skylar, and Rachelle all WANT me in the band?" Oh dear. She looked on the verge of having a Van-Warren-esque hyperactive freakout here...
Mere smirked. "Well, we don't exactly go running around and making decisions without everyone else being in on it, you know," Mere pointed out to her. "So...that leads to the answer being DUH."
"..................ohmygod." If it was possible for Stephanie to go deathly pale there? She would have. Instead, she just cutely fanned herself with her hand, trying not to squeal. "I... I'd LOVE to!"
"So glad you said yes!" Mere said, bouncing a little on her feet. "I can't wait to tell everyone else." Plus, Lexi would be able to help her learn some of the songs, since she had helped write them and all.
Stephanie almost literally tackled Meredith, hugging her tightly. "OhmygodthankyouSOmuchIpromiseIwon'tdisa
Mere gave her a squeeze back. "I already know that I won't be disappointed. I've seen you in concert. I think you'll fit right in."
