So...What Are We?
Who: Phoebe and introducing Naomi
Where: Chloe's Sugar Shack
When: Monday Afternoon, 8/16
Naomi swung her legs out from her seat as she waited for her friend to show up at the Sugar Shack. School was going to start this Monday, so Naomi wanted to enjoy her last few days of freedom before going 'back to the salt mines' and back to classes for her junior year. Definitely not looking forward to it. Another year of blending into the walls of Regan High and being another boring person. Yay for her. She was trying to not think of it right now, though.
Another game, another game-winning home run. Hey... with great power come great responsibility, right? And Phoebe had a responsibility to win games for her team. So there. Having just dyed her hair blondish-brown again, the lanky girl came walking into the Sugar Shack in her softball uniform, bat slung over her shoulder, and grinned when she saw Naomi. "Hey babe!"
Naomi grinned and waved to Phoebe when she walked inside the Shack. "Hey!" she said with her frantic little wave. "Go grab something to drink and pull up a chair, superstar!" She was drinking up a cup of hot chocolate of her own.
"Done and DONE." The other girl said with a giggle as she grabbed the nearest empty chair and pulled it over to the table, spinning it around and sitting on it that way. "You look, as always, nervous about going back to school. Calm down, hon. Seriously."
"Just starting to get sick of being the wallflower, I guess," Naomi said with a slight shrug. "I know I say that every year, but what I need to do is actually start, I don't know, talking to people or something."
"That's ALL you need. I mean look: you're gorgeous, ok? And nobody picks on you. Two things in your favor. You just need to be a little more outgoing. Like look at that Thompson girl last year. She finally started talking more, and she ended up dating JASON CARTER for gods sake!"
Naomi nodded. "Oh, I know. It's just a matter of actually going and *talking* to people, which is kind of hard for me." She giggled. "Girl definitely lucked out with Jason, huh? Talk about hot!"
"Exactly! And we're gonna be Juniors now, so we're gonna be a little higher on the food chain around the place." Ok, so granted... Feebz was already mildly popular... she just shied away from people due to fear of her powers. "Just wear those tight jeans of yours, start talking more, and trust me. Guys will FLOCK to you."
Naomi's eyes widened. "Tight jeans? Do you remember who you're talking to here? Weird clothes don't agree with me. I tripped at Prom because of the heels and long dress, rememer?"
"Naomi. Seriously. If you don't OWN tight jeans, we're gonna get you some. Because you know I ain't hitting on you here, but you got a NICE little bod. Show it off a little and guys'll be slipping in their own DROOL trying to talk to you."
Phoebe snickered, wondering how the hell her friend ever ended up with such a bashful personality.
"We should hit Avarice later. Scope out the guys. ALWAYS good scenery there..."
Naomi just shrugged. "Guess we're buying me some then. I'm not saying I'm a dog or anything. I guess I'm just not used to having guys pay attention to me. Not when there are girls like Camille Blake to pay attention to." She smiled at the mention of Avarice. "There are great looking guys there."
"I think every guy in the family that owns it is like... GORGEOUS. Sadly I think their all either taken or too old for us..." Phoebe sighed dramatically there, having, honestly, always sort of had a thing for Bretton and Brandon.
"One of the owners of that place is really cute, actually," Naomi gushed. "Benjamin? The one that just got married? Now that is a very lucky woman."
"I heard he owns a strip club too..." Ok, so now she was teasing her friend. She couldn't help it! "Maybe you should go daaaaance for him..."
Naomi blushed. "No! I could never do something like that!" she squealed. "Besides, you and I both know I'd just fall over my own feet or fall off the stage or something equally horrible."
"On the bright side, it still wouldn't be the clumsiest thing I've seen..." Phoebe pointed out with a snicker. "Remember last year? When Cynthia Stone tried to spike the volleyball, tripped, and went face-first into the net? Ended up wrapped in it like a human burrito?"
Naomi just started laughing. "She seems so nice, but I'm amazed that the girl hasn't died from some randomly tragic things that she has dine to herself."
"And she's gonna be a SENIOR this year. Somehow the juniors don't look so bad!" Snickering, she shook her head. Hey.. so she had her catty side. What of it? "Wonder if we'll have any celeb-sightings tonight at the club? Everyone from Haylee James to the members of Eternal Embrace and Broken Sunrise have been hanging in the place's VIP section lately..."
Even if it was catty, Naomi giggled just the same. Her grin got wide when Feebz mentioned the VIP section in Avarice. "I'm sure we'll see someone in there. Seems like they have new famous people there every night now."
"We'll have a good time. I promise." She smiled, knowing her friend was kinda a wallflower. "I made a new friend recently... I'm gonna see if we can bring you with us when we hang out. Get you out and about more."
"Oh, new friend?" While Naomi wasn't jealous, she was curious. She'd rather have another friend than some girl take her one friend away, after all. "Where'd you meet her?"
"You know Miranda Owens? She goes to our school... I'm just too damn involved in my own problems to notice anyone." Phoebe sighed, shaking her head. "Anyway, she was at my game a few days ago."
"Well, I know OF her," Naomi said. "She a fellow sports fanatic or something?"
"Big baseball fan. We bonded over our mutual love of Animal House." She said with a giggle, as Mouse brought over a fresh hot chocolate for her.
"Then you two were definitely made for each other," Naomi said with a laugh as she took another sip of her own drink.
"God, you make it sound like she's my girlfriend or something." Phoebe rolled her eyes and snickered. "I'm allll about the boys, thanksabunch."
"Right. Still, it's good to have someone that you can talk sports and junk with," Naomi said to her with a grin.
"Ok. So... We've always stood by each other, no matter what." Well... Phoebe knew she wanted to do SOMETHING to assure Naomi she was still her BFF. Nothing like divulging a huge secret, right? "If I tell you something... kinda freaky... can you PROMISE me not to get weirded out and hate me?"
"Sure," Naomi said to her. "There's nothing that you could say to me that would make me hate you, duh." Now, weirded out she couldn't quite promise, but she was getting weirded out herself by some of the stuff she had been doing lately.
"I think I... have some kinda severe hormonal problem. For the last year I've been having bad dreams like ALL the time, and I keep getting these intense bursts of strength and speed. Like I'm some kinda superhero or something." She looked away, her voice a whisper so only Naomi could hear her.
"Must be something in the water about bad dreams," Naomi admitted. She'd been having them, too, actually. "Intense bursts of strength and speed?" Sounded like what she was dealing with, too. She had accidentally pulled the door off its hinges last night. Explaining that to her mother had NOT been fun.
"Yeah. Like... it's not exactly skill or a coincidence that I've been hitting all those home runs lately." She felt a little ashamed, but at least felt better confiding in SOMEONE about it.
"This is...kind of strange." It wasn't for the reasons that Feebz would think, though. "I pulled a door off its hinges last night. My mom was PISSED at that, by the way. Think something is in the water?"
"Wait... you too?" Phoebe blinked, a little concerned now. "With me, this has been going on for close to a year. I've just... gotten good at hiding it."
"Mine's been kind of more recent," Naomi said. "It was like, in the last month, I guess?" She didn't do as much physical stuff as Feebz did, so maybe she didn't notice it as quickly.
"Do... do you think we should talk to someone? I mean.. who the hell would we even tell this to?" She was starting to panic now, as this no longer was just something that affected her. "I mean... who would believe us? Or not put us away somewhere?"
Naomi thought for a moment...and then shrugged. "I didn't realize this kind of stuff was even possible, honestly." She thought for a second. "We can always try researching on the internet."
"You any good at that? When it comes to computers... I'm kind of a cavewoman." She admitted with a blush. While certainly not dumb, computers and the internet were NOT Phoebe's 'thing'.
Naomi nodded. "I'm sure I can put something together." Her computer was at home, but she was certain that she could find something or another on just what the hell this was.
"Seriously... you're SO the smart one of us. I scrape by, but I know where my bread's buttered. Athletics and flirting." Hey, at least she had no delusions about herself, right?
"You're plenty smart," Naomi corrected her. "You've got street smarts and you're clever. I may be book smart, but I'd be screwed if I had to depend on my wits."
"See? That's why we make such a good combo. We're like Batman and Robin, if they were cute high school girls." Sadly? That kind of made sense in Phoebe's head.
"And without the creepy 'are they or aren't they' subtext and spandex costumes," Naomi added. Really, that was just kind of weird to her.
"Dork." Phoebe said playfully, giggling. "Anyway... wanna go back to your folks' place and see if we can find out, like, ANYTHING about what's wrong with us?"
Naomi nodded. "Sure. Let's get out of here and see what sort of weird disease we got so that we can sue the city for poisoning our water." She was pretty convinced of this.
"I hope it's at least something cool. Not like... some weird offshoot of gout or some stupid thyroid thing..." Oh god, Phoebe... just SHUT UP....
