Slow Day
Who: Andrew and Cassie
Where: Shooting Star Comics
When: Thursday Afternoon, 8/5
It was a slow time at Shooting Star Comics right now. You'd think that summer would have kids in here day and night, but, with the 'We don't babysit your damn kids' sign on the front of the store, mother's didn't drop kids off and leave them here for five hours, which sadly cut a teensy bit into business. However, totally worth it because they didn't have to deal with whiny kids complaining because they couldn't buy anything or weren't allowed to touch the Boba Fett action figure that Andrew guarded like a hawk. Thankfully, that wasn't necessary right now because no one was in the store. Andrew was actually flipping through a DnD book at the moment, contemplating things for a game that he was thinking of running. He'd have to advertise around here for players, but the idea of a game excited Andrew.
"Wow. This... This kinda sucks, Andrew. The place hasn't been this dead since that time Gwen and Bette got into it over whether or not the West Coast Avengers sucked or not and Bette threatened to punch the first person who insulted War Machine." Cassie said, sitting on the counter, swinging her legs absently as she thumbed through a copy of DareDevil.
"It'll be fine, Cassie," Andrew told her, not actually looking up from the DnD book. "It's just the 'dog days of summer' that kind of have people staying indoors a lot, too." He knew that a lot of people would forgo shopping to stay out of the heat. "Once school rolls around things will pick up a lot more."
"I hope so. I mean, we're not in any danger or anything, but I like knowing we make enough to keep trying to carry supply for some of the little indie publishers, which we might not be able to do if things don't pick back up soon." She actually pouted there, sweetly enough. "Oh... on a related note... thought you might be interested in this one... Gwen came to me for BUSINESS advice the other day."
"Like I said, things will be fine." Plus, it was abominably hot outside right now. He wouldn't want to go out into it, either. He actually DID look up when she mentioned that Gwen had come in for financial advice. "Wait...Gwen? The same person who called me 'Evil Personified' in a DnD game?"
"One and the same." She giggled, still kicking her feet a little in boredom. "She wants to open her own store with Blake once they get settled in Vegas. Says there's no good stores near them, she figures they could do decent business." Then her eyes got adorably concerned. "This is GWEN, Andrew. Asking about WORK stuff. Is... is the end coming and nobody told me?"
"Well, an end may be coming, but I don't think it has anything to do with Gwen wanting to work," Andrew said with a shrug. Ugh, he had obviously been around magic and stuff for FAR too long to be so blase about the end of the world. "Maybe she's finally fully growing up, you know? It can happen to anyone."
"Evidently! And Andrew, she didn't make a joke about wanting to see me naked ONCE! Not once!!!" Sadly, this was Cassie being serious! Usually Gwen delighted in making the younger girl startlingly uncomfortable.
"You say that like it's a bad thing," Andrew said to her. "You have no idea how relieved I am to hear something like that, after all." It was strange to think of your friend at least somewhat interested in having sex with your girlfriend, OK?
"Hey, YOU'RE the one that almost dated her..." Cassie said with a smirk. Oh, did she seem to enjoy rubbing Andrew's face in how many times he passed up on her? Possibly. Hey. ALL girls had a wicked streak somewhere!
"Says the girl that was dating Mr. 'I'm an awesome jock' at the high school," he said, arching an eyebrow at her. OK, that was because he had started seeing Ami because of a lovely little memory wipe done by Gwen, but that wasn't his fault!
"Hm. Seems to ME that was because YOU were with 'Blondie McFuture' as Gwen liked to call her." And then? She winced. Visibly. She said before she could think, and immediately looked sorry. "Oh, sweetie... I'm sorry... that... I didn't think."
He took a deep breath and then slowly let it out. "It's OK," he said to her. "Ami would probably laugh at that, anyway." Sadly, she probably would laugh a good bit at that, but that was Ami for you.
"I know you loved her, Andrew. And I'm SO sorry for making a joke of it." She knew Ami was really Andrew's first real love, and it killed her to have possibly hurt him with it. "If it helps... I think she'd be really proud of you right now. Being a watcher, running this store, becoming so mature..."
"I did love her," he said to her, smiling softly. "She might be proud." He shook his head after thinking for a moment. "You're the one that I love now, though." He reached over and squeezed her hand.
"Yep. I'm not too shabby as far as consolation prizes go..." She said with a laugh, squeezing his hand right back. "Especially now that Lucy's made me her own personal Barbie doll..."
"I don't think of you as a consolation prize," Andrew pointed out to her. "I liked you before Lucy started to dress you different." Not that he didn't like the stuff that Lucy had gotten her to wear now. That wasn't it at all.
"Well, thank you." She said, not sure if she REALLY believed that, but not really bothered anymore by it anyway. "So, what DO two teenagers do in a biiiiig, empty store with nobody watching?" She glared then, cutely poking him in the nose. "And if you say 'plan their next D&D campaign', I swear I will kick you in the shin."
He started to laugh when she threatened to kick him in the shin. "Alright, then we can always plan a White Wolf campaign," he suggested playfully. "Or we can go to the back and fool around. Your choice."
Cassie just giggled there, wiggling her little butt where she sat on the counter. "How do I know you're not using a Jedi Mind Trick on me here, young padawan?"
"If anyone's performing a Jedi Mind Trick here, I think it's you," he pointed out to her playfully. "You're the one suggesting going to the back and all."
"True. I suppose maybe I am getting a liiiittle more bold. Then again, I *am* about to start college..." She reminded him. "And arent all college girls supposed to be wild and party-like?"
"Well, I suppose..." he said to her. "Although I haven't been to many college parties myself. I suppose I'll have to go with you to a few when you get there, though."
"Oh yeah. Since I'm sure to be the hit of campus..." She said with an eyeroll. "Ok... lock 'er up... I'm gonna go clear those TPB's out of the back to... um... make some room."
"You never know about that," Andrew said to her, heading toward the door and locking it, turning the sign to closed so that no one would try to knock on the door or anything as well.
