Introducing a new Slayer... Who: Miranda and Phoebe Where: The Park When: Sunday Afternoon - August 1
In a pair of faded jeans, a plain white baseball shirt with blue sleeves and a Dodgers cap fitted nicely on her head Miranda stood and started to climb down from the stands after the final out had been played out, thus ending that afternoons softball game. Clark had stuck around for the first two inning, but the boy was nowhere near the sports fan Miranda was, before deciding he'd rather go do something more productive with his time. It had been a good game the winning team taking it by scoring two runs in the last inning, thus breaking the tie that had been running for the last three innings.
And speaking of those winning runs, the girl that hit them, Phoebe Stevens, came strutting off the field, like the hero that she was. Somehow, yet again, the girl had hit a multi-run homer to win the game. Looking pretty damn fine in those little softball shorts and jersey, her cap turned backward, Phoebe leaned against the fence, taking a long sip from a bottle of cold water.
"Nice game." Miranda greeted the girl once she reached the bottom of the stands as Phoebe was taking a refreshing drink of cool water from her bottle. Mir wasn't much into other sports, but present her with the chance to watch a pro game or an afternoon softball game and the girl will snatch the offer up without a thought.
"Hey, thanks!" Phoebe said with a bright smile. The girl had a tendency to change her hair color frequently, from brunette to blonde and back again, and today it was a dark brown, and tied back into a long braid. "I guess I got lucky again in the ninth, huh?" Yeah. Luck. She tried not to worry, afraid that someday, somebody would catch on that she had something... wrong with her, that she'd be experimented on... GAH! None of that right now! She shook it out of her head and looked back at the girl. "You go to Reagan High? You look familiar, like I know ya from somewhere."
"Somehow I don't think luck had anything to do with it." Miranda had seen the girl play before and the red head considered Phoebe a powerhouse player. The kind that didn't need luck on their side. "You're a natural at the game."
"Yeah, I do," Mir extended a hand to the other girl then, "Miranda Owens. Damn glad to meet you." The red head smirked quoting a partial line from the classic Animal House. At least it was considered a classic by the teen and her father. Miranda was surprised they hadn't worn the disc down yet.
Oh. AWESOME! Someone who shared her taste in classic comedy as well. Fine. We'll roll with it, hm?
Phoebe laughed and shook the girl's hand, nodding. "Phoebe Stevens. You can call me Feebz. And I'm half-tempted to call you Otter now." Because seriously, who DIDN'T love Animal House?
Ah. Someone who seemed to have an appreciation for classic films, or at least the classics of comedy. "I suppose you could try nicking me with a worse name." Miranda said with a soft laugh. "And nice to actually meet you, Phoebe Stevens aka Feebz."
"Yeah, ditto. Nice to meet YOU, Miranda Owens. So.. you frequently come to random softball games? I mean, nothing wrong with checkin' out a bunch of teenage girls in tight shorts, I'll admit...." She teased with a little playful smirk.
"When I get the opportunity. And it's not to watch teenage girls sport around in short, tight shorts." Miranda told the girl. "Guess you could say I'm an avid fan of the sport. Male or Female." Though guys were much more fun to watch playing the game.
"I see." Phoebe grinned with a little chuckle. "I kinda wish I could get into a baseball league. I love playing softball, don't get me wrong... but I think I could handle playin' the 'real thing' if you get my drift." She felt a little bad saying that, but hey! She didn't ask for this strength, did she?
"Hey. I say go for it." Mir encouraged the other girl. "Who knows with your swing you might be the first woman to make it into the pro leagues." Miranda's view was that if a girl was just as quailified or better quailified as a guy there should be no reason she shouldn't be allowed to play baseball in the major leagues.
"Now, see? This is awesome. It's like I got my own little fan club here. Girl could get used to THIS." She teased, letting out a little giggle. "So.. what grade are you gonna be in this year? Sorry I didn't recognize you... I just kind of tend to keep to myself a lot. Ok, and look at boys."
The red head gave a soft laugh at that. "I'll be a senior once school starts up again." Miranda informed her. And she completely understood not being recognized by Phoebe. Miranda tended to spend most her time with Clark, and when she did find herself at a softball game, Mir cheered her team on from the stands and then tended to leave after the finally out had been played.
"Cool. 'Bout to be a junior here. So what do you do when you aren't referencing the fine works of John Belushi?" She asked with a giggle, waving to a few of her teammates as she walked alongside the redhead. Phoebe used to have quite the circle of friends, being among the 'popular' circle... but had started keeping more to herself, more out of fear of losing those people if something was seriously wrong with her.
"Actually I was quoting a bit of the fine work of Tim Matheson." Miranda corrected her. "Hang out with my good friend Clark. Shop, do the movie thing once in a while as well as camping. And take in the occasional baseball game." The teen grinned as Phoebe had kind of gotten that already established a bit earlier in their talk.
"Movies and shopping both sound amazing, I'll say that. I never end up with time to enjoy either anymore..." She said, realizing as she said it that it was true: she had dedicated so much of herself to school, to softball, and to hiding what she was... that she barely DID anything else.
"Life's to short to not enjoy the things you like doing." At least that was Miranda's philosophy on the matter. "I mean why miss out on the enjoy-abilities of life when the next day you might find yourself unable to be doing just that."
"See? I need to think more like that. I should go out with you guys sometime, try to remember how to enjoy myself." Hey, to Phoebe? That was a grand idea. "You know Otis Day & The Nights are still playing shows? I'm sorry, but that makes me REALLY want to have a toga party."
"I don't know about a toga party, but the hanging out part? I think that's something that can definitely be done." Between herself and Clark, Phoebe would definitely have a grand ole time in the pairs company.
"I'll settle for the hanging out part. For now." Phoebe said with a wry giggle. "But eventually, a toga party will be had. Hey..." Oh dear. It was time for Miranda to see one of the quirkiest parts of Phoebe: her random, useless tidbits. "Did you know 'Ghostbusters' was originally written as a vehicle for Belushi? But he died before the script was finished and they ended up giving his part to Bill Murray."
"A well planned one." Mir agreed with a bit of a mischievous grin. Planned right, and with the right people in attendance, the party could be quite the success. "And nothing against Belushi, he was quite the actor in his own right, and his untimely death was tragic, but in my opinion Bill Murray was better in the role. You ever see him in What About Bob?"
"You like baseball, you can talk classic comedy, AND you've seen What About Bob?" Phoebe gave her a dubious little once-over before cracking up. "Oh man. This is the stuff best friends are made of here, girl."
"So, is this where we exchange numbers and do some kind of secret handshake?" Miranda said teasingly to the other girl. So she already had a best friend, didn't mean she had to keep it at that number. Nothing wrong with two fave people to hang out with. Especially with one who shared more then one interest with her.
"Sounds good. But reveal the secret handshake to anyone and you're on Double Secret Probation. Just warning you." She laughed, feeling normal again for the first time in a year. "And yes, I really AM lame enough to be really excited about making a new friend." Most of the other kids WANTED to be friends with Phoebe, actually.. But she tended to keep most people at arms length due to her fears about herself.
"Oh no! Not the dreaded Double Secret Probation." Miranda said in mock horror, a look which was captured on her face until the red head broke out in a full sized grin. "Now if you weren't even a little bit excited about have made a new friend I would be starting to wonder about your sanity." A remark that was said playfully. Cause really who wouldn't be giddy with happiness and excitement about making a new friend.
"Ok, so when do we do this? Because I'm thinking if this friend of yours is half as awesome as WE are, there's gonna be MUCH fun to be had.". Phoebe said with some degree of certainty.
"Well, with all the planning and whatnot that needs to be done," Miranda pausing a moment as if considering it all, "I'm thinking Tuesday night." She relayed to the girl with a slight nod. Sure the weekend might have been better, but that was such a long way off. "Unless you might already have plans for that night." Which certainly would be a downer as Mir was now looking forward to a BFFs night.
"Yep. I got plans." Phoebe said with a smirk. "I'm gonna be chillin' with my new buddy and her bestie." Oh, what a cheeky little thing, hm?
"Awesome!" Miranda returned enthusiastically. "I'll give you a call tomorrow on the wheres and whens." The red head was going to make sure this would be one excellent little get together.
"Excellent" Phoebe said with a mischevious grin. "I just hope your buddy can keep up with the awesomeness that is us. Because really... where the hell are you gonna find two more awesome chicks?" The girl laughed and set her hands at her hips.
