Shape Up or Ship Out
Who: Catherine and Kayla
When: August 4th, Late Evening - Almost August 5th
Where: Alleyway
After her 'discussion' with Mere, Kayla didn't bother to go home. She was still far too worked up to even consider that. So... what was a Slayer to do when she had all that pent up energy and aggression? Try to work it off. She'd been hunting all evening, something which, before her injury, she had never done. Now? Now it felt like all she was programmed to do.
She was currently in an alleyway not too far from the Shack, still dressed in her gym clothes, fighting off two vampires. There was an almost dancers grace to her movements, given how fluid her movements were, and yet... there was something a little off to the way she fought. She could have killed them immediately, since they were newborns... unskilled and hungry, but she just couldn't do it. She had to get that aggression out first. Having knocked one out cold, she focused her attention on the other - a Joan Jett wannabe, by the look of her - and knocked her to the ground. She kept... punching her in the face, deaf to the vampires plea's for her to stop.
Catherine had actually been on her way home from doing the same thing, patrolling. Of course, Catherine usually spent her time in graveyards. She didn't blend in well to clubs like some of the other girls could do, due to her 'eclectic' appearance, but pulling vampires to her in a graveyard was very easy when she was the only 'food' around. Besides, she preferred the quite of the graveyard. Also, she didn't like having to lure them out with seduction like some other Slayers did. It just wasn't her style.
She had been walking when she heard the scuffle in the alleyway. She was actually thinking that the person crying out was a human being pummeled by a vampire, so, what she came across was a bit of a surprise. "Kayla, finish the vampire and be done with it already," Catherine said to her. What was with people and drawing out fights?
Kayla had almost said 'I'm not done yet', but for whatever reason, she bit her tongue and did as she was told, staking the vampire underneath her. She hit the ground awkwardly (since she was straddling said vampire), but got up without complaint. She figured Catherine wouldn't like it if she left a straggler, so she staked him before he regained consciousness. "Done," she mumbled, looking at Catherine with that same hard look that she'd been giving everyone recently.
Yeah well, Catherine had nothing to fear from Kayla. Not only was the unofficial 'head' of the Slayers, she also had A LOT more training than this girl. Plus, she didn't think that she was foolish enough to actually try something. Catherine just stared her down right back. "Good," she said. "Because playing around too much like that is an easy way to get yourself attacked from behind by something you missed if you aren't careful."
"I'll have to remember that," Kayla replied, anger evident in her tone. It looked like she still wanted to throw down, but something in her hesitated at the idea - maybe that was just her common sense, hm?
If there was one thing that Catherine didn't like, it was in fighting. It was why she had went to her own friend, Gwen, and asked her to tone down the Skylar hate a bit. So this? Was not getting by her. "You can be angry with me all you like, but all of your strength will go toward nothing if you don't learn how to focus and not get yourself killed because you were distracted by your own emotions. You have to leave those behind when you go out to hunt."
Kayla clenched her jaw and took a step closer to Catherine. She'd never been a fighter, herself. ... Just the idea of it, of fighting... it physically made her sick when Gabriel first told her what she was. What she had to do. Now? After her injury? It was like a switch had been flipped and she didn't know how to turn it off. "I know that, Catherine."
"You know it, and yet you continue to do just the thing you shouldn't," Catherine said to her, continuing to stand up to her. She merely tilted her head to one side as she watched all of Kayla's muscles tighten up. Whatever the problem was with Kayla, Catherine didn't care. She just wanted the girl to be a good Slayer and not have another 'Candi' on their hands, even if they were letting her back in.
"I can take care of myself just fine, Catherine," Kayla grumbled, dangerously close to getting her ass kicked at this point. Not that she cared anymore. Interestingly. "Mind getting out of the way?"
"So I've seen," Catherine said in a blank tone, so one couldn't be sure if it was sarcastic or not. What she did next was an effort to show Kayla just how much she was distracted by this rage that she had within her. In one swift move that was hard to trace, Catherine reached up and grabbed Kayla by the back of her neck and, using her free hand to grab her by the wrists, pushed her against the brick wall of the alley, pinning her to it. "Are you still so sure?"
Stunned was definitely one word used to describe Kayla at the point. Pissed-Off was another. Face pressed against the wall, she turned and pressed her cheek against it, letting out a low growl. "Let. Me. Go."
"Or what?" Catherine asked. "You're going to sit there and flail against me? I'm trying to make a point, Kayla. Please learn it for your own good." A small smile appeared on her face. "Besides, now you have to listen to me. And you're going to, if you want to continue training with your Watcher." The smile dropped. "You are starting to become a danger to yourself and others because of your feelings. You HAVE to go into a battle with a level head, or you can get yourself or even others killed. You can get ME killed if you are supposed to watch my back. Whatever your problem is, you need to deal with it. See a psychiatrist. Learn to meditate. I don't care what you do. Just do it." This was coming from someone with anger issues of her own, as well. Of course, she was trying to deal with her own.
Kayla thunked her head against the wall and let out a frustrated sigh. She didn't much care about herself anymore, but... Putting others in a position to get hurt or possibly killed spoke to her. Somewhere in there. "Fine, Catherine."
Catherine felt the girl relax a little. She didn't let her go just yet, but now she wasn't pressing as hard against her, either. "There are plenty of people you can talk to about this, including your own Watcher." He had to notice this new aggression in her.
...Or a worried girlfriend, hmm? "I'll... I'll think about it, Catherine. Now, please, just let me go," Kayla said, her voice flat. Defeated.
Hearing the defeat in the girl's voice, Catherine nodded and stepped back, letting the girl go as well. "Talk to whomever you want, just do it before something bad happens that you'll regret."
"Alright," Kayla murmured, unable to look Catherine in the eyes. "I'm... I'm sorry."
"It's fine, Kayla," Catherine said to her. "Just take care of yourself and things will be fine."
