Picnic at High School
Who: Buffy and Derek
Where: Ronald Regan High
When: Monday, lunch time
Buffy was sitting outside at lunch time at Regan High. It was a nice day out: not too hot and not too chilly. Of course, being LA, it didn't get that cold, but it was already warming up nicely for her. She had packed a lunch today, since Regan High's cafeteria was about as appetizing as any other high school cafeteria had ever been, and had just spread out a blanket for her to eat her food on and chill before her lunch period was over.
"Well, check out the cozy little picnic..." Derek's voice called out from behind her, as he walked over, PB&J sandwich in his hand, bookbag slung over his shoulder. "Room for one more?"
Buffy turned around and looked at him. "Hey," she said. "Of course there is room." She moved her stuff over a little so that he could sit with her. "I'd rather have a picnic out here than try to stomach what they are serving in there."
"I think I'd rather have a root canal than stomach what they're serving in there." He chuckled, sitting down across from her. "So, how've you been? Haven't seen you since that night apparently neither of us could sleep."
"I've been doing alright," Buffy told him. Of course, she never got to sleep full nights, but that was a part of being a Slayer. Not that she could tell that to him. "Have you been sleeping any better?"
"Off and on." He replied, changing the subject by giving her a crooked grin and motioning to her hair. "You look different without leaves stuck in your hair."
Buffy blushed a little, unconsciously raking her fingers through her hair. "Um...yeah. Not so digging the outdoorsy look these days." Damn, and here she was, hoping that he hadn't noticed.
He laughed softly, taking a bite of his sandwich. "Relax, I was just teasing."
She couldn't help but return his smile, taking a sip of her diet coke before answering. "You fall down in one park and everyone's teasing you about it forever," she said with a grin, hoping that next time, she wouldn't have half the graveyard in her hair when she ran into him at night.
"So, I know you're new... but where did you go before this?" He asked, finishing his sandwich and fishing a little bottle of water from his bag.
"I went to Sunnydale High School for about two years," Buffy told him. "I went to Hemry for a little while before that. My parents got a divorce, but now they're trying to work it back out, so that's why we moved back." Not the only reason, but it was one of them.
"Yeah, the parents thing? I know all about that." He wasn't EVEN going into how much about that he knew. "Have you had a chance to meet many people here yet? It's gotta be tough moving to a new place, not knowing anyone..."
"Well, I know a few people here, because a few other people moved from Sunnydale, too." More like, twenty or something, from how it kind of looked. "I haven't had the chance to meet many new people, though. Well, other than you."
"You think your folks would mind you going out for an evening?" He asked, a brow raising as he smiled to her.
Buffy smiled. Was she actually getting asked on a date? "Nah, I don't think they'd mind a bit." Dawn would keep them busy at any rate.
"Then, if they won't pass out at the idea of their daughter on a motorcycle, would you like to go grab a bite to eat with me tonight? Maybe around 6?" Derek wasn't the most romantic guy around, but hey, he was trying to be polite.
Buffy had torched her old gym, so anything she did at this point wouldn't be as bad. "I think that they can handle themselves, although my dad might drool over your bike a little. Dinner at six sounds great."
"I'll be there. Evil monsters couldn't stop me." And the best part was, he was kidding.
Buffy arched an eyebrow. "Well, let's hope not." If only he knew.
