Just Can't Seem to Flirt
Who: Giles and Delilah
Where: Ashes to Ashes
When: Wednesday, 6/17, Nighttime
Delilah was finishing up closing up the shop for the night. She had let Tara go a little early, since things had been slow for a while, and now she was doing the nightly paperwork. She HATED this part of owning a business, but she liked the other side of it, working with magical accessories and such, so she dealt with it.
The door opened then, as Giles walked in, jaw tight with stress, his tie loosened a bit. After the talk he'd had with Faith... honestly? He was impressed he hadn't destroyed things. "Delilah? Are you terribly busy?"
She could see that something had happened just by looking at his face. "Not really," she said, shoving the paperwork aside. "What happened?"
"I'm just wondering if perhaps I coddle Faith too much. Wondering if perhaps the old ways WERE more effective, when we treated the girls like students, rather than family..." He let out a frustrated sigh, unsure whether he was more angry or hurt.
"You know that's not right," Delilah said, standing up and walking over to him. "What did she do, anyway?" It had to of been something bad for him to have been questioning things like this.
"She's been harboring a fugitive. She's known where Miss Harrington has been for months." He shook his head, trying not to fume. "She's got no respect for me or my authority."
"Oh my...has she really?" Delilah couldn't help but be amazed that Faith, the girl that Candice Harrington had attacked, would do such a thing. "Why would she do such a thing?"
"She claims she's in love with the girl." Giles grumbled, shaking his head. "Because clearly, Candice cares SO much about her." Oh yes... Giles DID have biting sarcasm occasionally.
She arched an eyebrow at him. She had actually never heard him talk like that before. "Giles, I'm sorry that she kept something like that from you," Delilah said to him. "If she's really in love, then she may not be approaching this from a rational aspect."
"And that irrationality is putting her in position to be hurt or even killed. Along with the rest of us." He sat down, trying to calm down as he set his head in his hands.
Delilah shook her head. She couldn't understand how someone could fall in love with someone who tried to kill them. She sat down beside him. "I...don't know what to say," she finally said. "I can't believe what I'm hearing."
"I told her that I won't send anyone after Candice. For now." He sighed, shaking his head again. "I'm doing this for her. But if Harrington hurts anyone, even slightly, I swear I won't stop until the girl is taken down for good."
She nodded. "I don't blame you," she told him. "I'd be even less nice about it. I'm not sure I'd allow that at all." She was nothing right now if not honest.
"I'm just not sure how to handle this. I... understand why she did it... but I can;t understand why she didn't trust me to know about it. I'm not sure if she can repair the damage she's done." Delilah wasn't the only one being brutally honest, it would seem.
"She may have thought that you would have went behind her back and try to do something to Candice for her own good," Delilah said. "The girl has not had the best of pasts with authority figures."
"I just... after all I've done for her, I thought she'd have trusted me more than this. I can just hope that she won't do anything like this again, and that her trust in Candice isn't misplaced." He stood, still looking a tense, stressed wreck.
She stood up as well, reaching over and putting a hand on his shoulder. She actually wasn't very good at showing affection. She was actually somewhat known for occasionally shocking people (literally) when she was nervous, so she tended not to touch people much. "I hope so as well, on both counts."
So, maybe it was eyeroll-worthy to say he felt a spark when she touched him, but he turned to face her, looking down at her as their eyes met for a moment... "Thank you. For being here for me."
"I'm glad to be here for you," she said back to him. Even if the circumstances weren't all that great. "You know you can come to me about anything."
"I believe that. I've come to... greatly enjoy our time together." Wow. Giles. What a flirt, huh? "You've also become... quite the confidante to me. Which is why I have... a bit of a proposition for you."
"A proposition?" she asked. Yeah, she wasn't much of a flirt, either, which was probably why Jeremy had been SO freaked out when she was hitting on him. "What sort of proposition?"
He placed a hand on her shoulder, forcing a gentle smile. "Due to a huge spike in demonic activity, I'm opening a new branch of the Council in the Las Vegas region. I'll be sending Wesley Wyndham Price to head that up. He'll answer ONLY to me. But in doing that... I'm going to need a new second-in-command and advisor HERE."
OK, maybe she was hoping that he was going to ask her on a date. Still, this WAS a big deal. Her jaw dropped for a second, then she said, "Are...are you asking me to do so?"
"I am." God, Giles felt like a dipshit. He wanted to ask her this... but honestly, he WANTED to ask her out MORE. But he chickened out, and this was what came out first.
"I'd be delighted to do so," Delilah said to him. "It would be an honor and a privilege." It would be more of a damn privilege if he'd ask her out on a damn date, though!
"Perhaps we could talk about this more.... sometime?" If you listened, VERY closely, you could almost hear the mun facepalm. "Perhaps... over dinner?"
She smiled. That was closer to what she had *actually* wanted. "I think I would like that very much," she said, looking up at him.
"Well then." He cleared his throat, obviously a bit uncomfortable being flirty. As in.. at ALL. "Alright then. Good."
