The Littlest James
Who: Sam and Lydia
Where: Avarice
When: May 21st, Friday Evening
Once again, Sam found himself in his soon-to-be brother-in-law's gothic establishment, Avarice. This time, however, the eldest James sibling was hunched over a glass of Jameson's on the rocks at the bar, his second of the evening, listening to the shrieking guitar, pounding double-kick-drums, and shredded vocals pumped in through the club's PA system. It had been good seeing Skylar, even if she'd given him some pretty harsh ribbing over his evening tryst with a certain platinum-haired pop star. They'd talked briefly about
Meanwhile,
Swiveling in his seat, Sam tilted his head to the side and brushed his hair from his eyes, holding his glass loosely in his fingers, taking another long, appreciative sip of the amber liquor. It was early in the week, so while busy, Avarice wasn't completely packed, allowing him to look over the crowd from one person to the next, rather than lose his gaze amongst a mass of sweaty humanity. One dancer in particular caught his attention, a brunette dressed in an ensemble that left decidedly little to the imagination, particularly those shorts. He watched as she twitched from side to side, his eyes remaining on her for a long moment. It wasn't like he was exactly spoken for, after all. He could look.
Yep. Time for a rude awakening, Sammy-Boy.
You have to fucking be kidding me, he thought, eyes widening when he realized just whose ass he'd been staring at. He coughed, spluttering, as he shifted his attention to his kid sister's face, watching as she took her Coke from the bar, setting his glass aside. Okay. Don't be the asshole brother who busts his sister for dressing like a skank. "
To her credit, she didn't even realize he was upset. She waved cheerily at him, hopping up and down. "Sammy! Hi!" She sprinted on over to him, throwing her arms around his neck. "I swear I was gonna reply to your messgae. Just wanted to burn off some energy first."
"Yeah, I can see that," he replied, laughing as she threw herself into hsi arms, giving her a hug, then releasing her. "I was beginning to think you'd forgotten about your bro." Sam reached for his drink again, watching his youngest sibling with a cursory eye. "Enjoying a night on the town, Lyds?" James asked her with a wink.
"Yeah... I was kind of bored. Skylar and Gideon are practicing, and Ben's off, well, being Ben. So I figured I'd come get some dancing in. How's my favorite pop-groupie?" Ohhhh yeah. Skylar had totally told her.
Gideon - that was a name he hadn't heard since they'd all been together in November. And then, of course, there was the enigmatic Ben, whom he had met before at Thanksgiving, but had yet to run into here in
"Well, it's not nearly as scandalous as my big brother's little fling with the pop princess, but I guess I can keep trying..." She hip checked him sweetly as she gave a 'so there!' grin.
"God, you and Skylar both," Sam retorted, shaking his head and downing the last of his Jameson's as he sat down on the bar stool, gesturing for her to take the one next to him. "Like I told Sky, I didn't leave LAX determined that anything like that was going to happen." Then, he flashed her a grin. "You should be proud of your big brother - it took me less than twenty-four hours to be on the cover of several gossip rags in the city."
"I am kinda jealous. I've probably done WAY worse things than you and nobody seems to care..." Hey, nothing like poking fun at your own rep. Back in
"You just haven't been doing those things with the right people, I guess," Sam replied jokingly.
"Oh, we dish almost every night." Then she backpedaled and laughed, trying not to roll her eyes. "Ok, every night that she and Ben aren't practically tearing the damn house down..."
"Okay, look - running into my kid sister wearing an outfit that would put some of Haylee's to shame is one thing - " He knew that was going to get a snicker or a giggle or quite probably more ribbing, but he drove on anyway. " - but I don't need to hear about Skylar and Ben doing... whatever it is that they do." Of course, the evidence that Sky and her beau had enjoyed bodily congress at least once was quite apparent, given the growing bump he'd noticed in her midsection.
"Dude, they're getting MARRIED. And Ben's had more ass than a toilet seat. It doesn't take a genius. Seriously, he makes Mikey look virtuous." And there it was: the one thing that would likely send home just how wild Ben could be.
"Jesus," Sam muttered at that last qualifier, reaching for his drink and taking a swig, coughing and shaking his head as he set it down again. While some part of him was definitely intrigued to learn more about the man who would become his brother-in-law, some other, more rational part of him was perfectly content with knowing as little as possible. "Well, anyway... how's life in the big city treating you, Lyds? Things going well with Gideon?"
"They really are. He's calmed me down a lot, which, really, is a good thing." She admitted, kind of liking not being the crazy one anymore. "He's really a good kid, Sammy. I wish Mom and Dad would take our relationship more seriously. I think they just don't want me with him because his family's not rich."
"Glad to hear that, Lyds," Sam replied, leaning back in his seat, casting his gaze over the crowd again. Secretly, he was trying to figure out how
She saw the look he was giving her... and face it. She knew him well enough to know what he was thinking. She flashed her wrist, which was donning a loud, bright blue UNDER-21 wristband. "Fear not, brother-o-mine. Any of us who come in here gotta wear one."
"Well, good. That saves me the trouble of repeatedly telling you that I won't buy you liquor, no matter how much you plead or beg," Sam replied, glancing at her wristband, then looking back at her face. "So, did Sky tell you the actual reason I came to LA? Or did she spend most of that conversation complaining about my newfound proclivity for pop stars?"
"Yeah, pretty much the whole conversation was basically how much better you could do. So what's the haps?" She plopped down on a stool beside him, just a big, silly grin on her face. Hey, she missed him. STFU.
Sam shook his head with a smile. God forbid if either of his sisters actually met Haylee while the two of them were together - assuming, of course, that would happen. "Sky has never been afraid to share her opinion, I'll give her that much," he said, smirking at his kid sister. "Part of it was that I was kind of sick of not seeing either of you more than once every eight or nine months. Sue me for being a big sap."
"Well heck... if you decide to stay, once you get a place I'm sure Jo and Ben would love me to stay with you sometime. I think sometimes I end up being an unintentional cockblock." Yes, she still called her sister by her real first name without thinking sometimes. And yes, she just said 'cockblock'.
"The length of my stay depends on several factors, actually, least of which is whether or not my kid sister is an impediment to my other sister getting laid. Believe it or not, I don't really give a damn about Sky's sex life," Sam replied with a wink as he took another sip from his glass. Going to have to start mixing a glass of water in here, Sammo. He hesitated for a moment while setting his glass down again, trying to determine whether or not to broach the subject of his newfound "disability." "Anyway. That's what I'm doing here in LA. Now," he continued, settling back in his chair. "I think we've danced around the topic long enough, Lyds. When did you decide to start wearing pants so short your butt was hanging out of the bottom - in public?"
"Hey, if ya got it, flaunt it, bro." She said with a laugh and a wink. "Besides... all the OTHER guys in here weren't complaining." Oh yes... the gauntlet had been thrown.
Sam raised a brow at her comment, and for the first time since she sat down with him, her brother had a somewhat serious look on his face. "Look, I'm not Dad and I'm not going to be a jerk and tell you that you can't go out in public and look like a skank if you want to, Lyds, but this is a bit much, even for you - hell, even for Sky," he said emphatically.
"Sammy? Do you have ANY idea how much LESS skanky I am now than I was?" She actually realized then that he might NOT understand how crazy she'd been. "At least now I'm just with Gideon. I know I'm only sixteen but... let's just say that prior to him, I wasn't the most chaste gal around."
That retort earned raised brows from her brother -
regarding her with a lop-sided grin.
"Well, it doesn't matter because it's OVER. I happen to love Gideon. And I'd never break his heart." Aww. How sweet! "So, when should we expect to see you and Haylee walking down the aisle?" She asked with a little snicker.
"Just as long as he treats you well, he's good in my book, Lyds," Sam said, gesturing at the bartender, then gratefully accepting a glass of water. "Can't believe they won't let me fucking smoke in here unless I'm in the VIP lounge," he muttered, taking a long sip. It would figure she would pick that moment to ask such a ridiculous question, and Sam nearly spat his water all over the bar, covering his mouth with his hand, choking and coughing. "I tell you what - let me get more than one date in with her and I'll let you know, alright?" he asked.
Oh GAWD. He wasn't serious, was he? Jeez. Still, she wasnt going to give HER view on this, not when she hadn't seen her brother in months. "Ok, ok... fine. Anyway, I'm gonna go dance some more, before people see us and think you're a cradle robber"
"Yeah, I probably need to get a move on before they have to wheel me out of here - don't worry, I'll call a cab," he said, wagging a finger at her. "I feel like I should have you text me or something when you get back to Sky's place, just so I know you're safe, but that would probably be at like four in the morning. I'll be around. We'll do lunch, alright?" he asked, getting up from his seat, taking another swig of water.
"For sure. And Sammy?" Her voice, sweetly enough, got kinda lovey there, as she threw her arms around him again. "I missed ya."
He turned his head toward her as she spoke up, finding her arms around his neck again, and gave her a squeeze about her waist with his forearm, adding a quick kiss on the cheek. "Missed you, too, Lyds," Sam replied, releasing her, smiling and then turning to head for the exit. Why do they have to go and grow up on you?
