Derek hated high school. Totally, completely, 100% hated it. Not the education part... to the contrary of how he appeared, he loved learning, and could sit down for hours with nothing but his textbooks. But he hated the other kids. The hormonal, catty, gossippy, idiotic kids. They had nothing better to do than walk around talking about who was sleeping with who, picking on each other, and trying to make themselves look more important than they were. No thanks, really. Derek would rather be quietly working on his motorcycle.
Which is what he'd done most of the day, which is ALSO why he ended up finishing his homework so late. So, to unwind a little before crashing, he walked down the road to Mel's, which was his usual greasy-food hangout.
Walking in, the waitress waved at him and grinned. "You want your usual, honey?"
Derek gave her a wave in return and nodded. "Black coffee and..."
She cut him off with a laugh. "One slice of blueberry pie. Spend too much time working on the bike again?"
He chuckled with an embarrassed nod. "You know me too well, Janice."
As she walked away, he took a look around for a place to sit.
