Don't Leave Me?
Who: Andrew and Cassie
Where: Shooting Star Comics
When: May 5th, Evening (It took us a while to finish, OK?)
Andrew locked the door of Shooting Star Comics, closing up for the day. It had just been him and Cassie at the store since four, and now he was just glad that he could spend some alone time with his girlfriend and not have to deal with other nerds whispering about how they'd like to see HER in a chainmail bikini. Next weirdo he heard say that he was going to turn into a flying monkey demon. Yeah, he could do that now. "You doing alright back there, Cassie?" he called out to the back.
Cassie had heard the boys mentioning that as well, and kind of blushed and skittered away. She still wasn't quite used to how... attractive boys were suddenly finding her since Lucy started making her over. She was embarrassed by it... but kind of liked it, too. "I'm ok, honey... just kinda got a little blushy for a bit. Decided to come back here and sort the stuff going out tomorrow."
"Well, everyone's gone now, so you can come out." Of course he liked that she was realizing just how attractive she really was. Did he like other guys staring at her like they were? Not so much.
"Really?" She poked her head out cutely, eyes surveying the store. Yup! Empty. Awesome. The little blonde shuffled out, taking her hoodie off, now just in baggy jeans and a t-shirt bearing a picture of War Machine. Yeah. So she liked the West Coast Avengers. What of it???
"Yep, really," he said back to her. He smiled at her when she did come out. "Changed out of the skirt then?"
"I couldn't help it!" She laughed, a little embarrassed. "I love the look Lucy gave me, but I still get a little bashful if I think someone's checkin' me out." She shuffled her feet nervously, laughing. "So... you locked the door, right?" Why she was deciding that THIS was the time to have an important talk, she'd never know. Sometimes? Courage hit Cassie at odd times.
"You looked great in it," he told her. "Doesn't mean I don't wanna turn guys into monkeys for looking at you, though." Was Andrew jealous? Totally. So what? "Yeah, I locked the door. Why?"
Sweetly? Cassie LOVED that jealousy. Maybe it was the catty part of her that was still liking making him suffer JUUUST a bit for what he'd unintentionally put her through in the last year. "Kinda need to talk to you about Bette. While she's not here."
He nodded. "OK, what's up with Bette then?" Sadly, Andrew had NO idea what this could be about. Was she pregnant or something like that?
"She's... um.... ok. Do you agree that sometimes, when people are desperate, they do things that aren't always right, but are still forgivable? Like... maybe taking something that doesn't belong to them?" She had that cute, 'dont kill me' tone to her voice.
"Um...sure, OK," Andrew said. He really had no clue what the hell she was talking about. He just didn't really picture her doing stuff like that.
"Remember back in Sunnydale, when all that crap with my dad was going on? I, um... felt alone. Completely. And I didn't really have many friends at the time.... and I remembered that your friend Warren had that... project he'd been working on... Maya?" She nibbled her lip, not TRYING to beat around the bush... she was just nervous.
"The robot? Yeah, I remember that," he said to her. He really hadn't thought about Maya in a while. "What about her?"
"Well, I kinda cribbed the blueprints. And copied them. And..." she took a deep breath. "Look... when everything happened with Ami, I needed a friend, ok? You were with her, and Dawnie was away at school, and I had NOBODY, and I mighta sorta freaked out and... tried the blueprints out."
"Did you really?" He was actually kind of amazed, and not totally in a bad way. Then he put it together. "Wait...you mean Bette is....WOW."
"Yeeeeaaaah. Bette's... kinda a robot. There WAS a 'real' Bette, but she died about a year before the Matthews family took me in. I kinda made them a new Bette, because they couldn't get over her being gone. It was my way of thanking them. Something happened though, and... I think it was because of the magic that was in the air because of the whole Slayer spell or something, but she somehow turned out... TOO good. Like, a once-in-a-lifetime deal. She has real sentience... that's why she's so different from Maya."
"Actually, I have been reading a bit about magic and technology, and that's entirely possible," he said to Cassie. "Wow, though, I never would have guessed. She's amazing."
"I needed a friend... so...." She sighed, a bit of guilt in her voice. "I made one."
"Well, Warren made someone to have sex with," Andrew pointed out. At least it wasn't THAT!! "Don't feel guilty, though."
"At least it turned out well. I worry that if anything happens to her, she could reboot or something and not be the same... but other than that? I think she's perfect." She grinned, giving a still slightly guilty grin. "And while I find it a little odd that she's kind of... thinking she's falling in love, who am I to doubt it?"
"She's falling in love, too? That's really kind of neat," he said to her. "Actually, I *think* I might be able to help out with the rebooting thing. I mean, I wouldn't want to try anything on her until I was sure, but I think we could do something to where you guys wouldn't have to worry about that."
"But how can we be SURE? I mean, if we somehow ruined her, or changed her... I'd never forgive myself." Cassie responded with a squeak to her voice usually reserved for when she was in a panic.
"Only with lots of research, and talking to her about it," Andrew said. "She should have a choice in the matter as well."
"Sadly... I think Talia should get a say in it now too." Cassie said with a long sigh. "Andrew... I think Bette is all she has, truthfully."
He nodded. "We can get them both together and talk to them about it, warn them about the risks, and then let them come to a decision together and figure it out."
"If need be... can we ask... you-know-who for help?" She asked with a raised brow.
He shrugged. "I'm not sure, honestly. I can always put in the call," he told her.
"He was a pig, but he might be able to give you some pointers or something." She said. And if she was willing to have him call THAT guy? That was saying a lot.
"True on both counts," he said to her. "Hopefully it won't come to that." He hoped not, anyway. He hoped that they could do it themselves.
"Andrew?" She didn't want to do this. She REALLY didn't. But bringing up her reasons for building Bette to begin with had brought a lot of bad memories to the surface. Her voice cracked, and she FELT it. "Please... don't... don't ever leave me?"
He wrapped his arms around her. "I didn't do it on purpose the first time around," he told her. It had been a problem with the whole 'memory' thing. He hadn't exactly meant to completely forget her existence, after all. It had just, happened.
"I know... but... I guess I meant your heart. The first time... I was your consolation prize. Please... just hear me out." She didn't want to aggravate him, or make him upset with her. "I'm not judging. I just know that Dawnie was the one you loved. The one you wanted. You couldn't have her... so you went out with me. And then... after you were made to forget me... I saw how you looked at Ami. It was such pure, undiluted love... it was a way you'd NEVER looked at me before. I feel like, maybe now... you're finally there with me." Sadly, she no longer remembered Lucy's funeral, and the way he comforted her there. "But I'm so afraid, Andrew... I'm so completely, entirely, painfully in love with you, and I have been since the first time we went out."
"I was in love with Dawn, but I'm not anymore. Dawn was just...kind of the only girl that actually talked to me in a way that wasn't making fun of me, plus she was there for me when my brother did things like lock me in the basement overnight or when my parents forgot I existed for weeks at a time. It was kind of inevitable that I'd have a hideous crush on her." Psychology said that. "I'm with you now. Just you. No thinking of or wanting anyone else. You're the only one that I want."
"Promise?" She asked, her voice just, devastatingly cute and fragile. "I'm sorry... I... I just get stupid sometimes." She felt ridiculous, and blushed like she'd never blushed before.
"Yes, I promise," he said to her. "And it's not stupid. There's nothing to be sorry for."
